We are on a peninsula that is about a mile wide and about 30 miles long. (If you’re ever on Jeopardy, don’t use my facts to answer a question!) The Dunes Bible Camp sits between Long Beach on the south, and Ocean Park on the north. Pacific Highway runs next to the camp, and there's another two lane road that runs up the other side of the peninsula. The ocean is on our west (duh!) and there's a bay on the east. The ocean is just off the camp property, and we can see a little bit of it from our window. We can hear it when the windows are open. There are only three couples here, as one couple was from Canada, and had problems getting additional insurance to cover them in the States, ... read more

I was very sore after the passes of death, so I figured 50 miles to Ione in one day would be a bit of a rest. The map was deceptive again. There were hills then went up and down all day. It took forever to get anywhere and with my legs not recovered, it was slow going. I made Ione in about 7 hours of riding not feeling any more rested. When people find out the route that I had traveled, most locals area aghast. THe most common reactions are "Why did you go that route?! 40 miles south there are passes you would hardly notice" and "You climbed Sherman pass? Did you know that is the highest pass in the state? YOu should have gone around that". I am considering somer serious deviations from the ... read more

Just been to see the Snoqualmie Falls and it is very picturesque. There is not a lot there but the atmosphere is very tranquil and well worth a visit. The water fall has a drop of 270 feet and lands in a 65 foot deep pool. There are two hydro electric plants there. The construction of the first was started in 1898 and the second added in 1910. Between the two stations they generate nearly 42,000 kw which is enough to power around 16,000 homes. I think that the idea of hydro electric power generation is absolutely brilliant but why o why does the building that it is contained in have to be so bloody ugly when the surroundings are so beautiful. One of the doors to the buildings was open and I saw painted on ... read more

I went with Wolf to a local tavern, about 10 miles away in Fall City, the other night. It was full of bikers and rednecks and the decor was a little higglede pigglede which all added to the ambience. It was actually quite a nice place with nice people. I got asked for ID when I ordered, you are supposed to carry it at all times, I was quite surprised as I havent been asked for ID since I was 17. We got a couple of pints of a locally brewed pale ale, which was quite nice, for $7.50. It's cheap over here. We then adjourned to the back yard so that Wolf could smoke. It has been really warm here for the last few days so it was not a problem. In the yard there ... read more

Today I started out really early and hit mazama pass. This pass was much worse than it looked. A 3.5k foot climb in the desert. No fun. The cafe in Mazama was very nice, but not worth the ride. I made it over the pass and into Republic about 1:30 in the afternoon. Everyone I talked to in town said the next pass was high, but not too bad since the road had just been resurfaced. I saw there was a campsite near the peak of the pass, and I figured even I could make it up the pass in 5 hours before the light failed, and I could just camp on the peak. The pass was no fun, as any 2.5k foot climb would be, but I go to the top near dusk.....only to find ... read more

okay..time to catch up! We stayed at a KOA in Tacoma, about 20 minutes outside of the city. We like it so much in Seattle that we decided to stay 2 nights. We went down to the Public Market....it is so cool there! They had beautiful flowers for sale, different types of flea market goods as well as produce stands and of course, the fish markets..... we were hungry, so we got these HUGE peaches, they were called, "Oh my god" peaches...after I took my first bite, I knew why. They were sooo juicy...it is the best peach I ever had...the only time I ate everything but the pit! I will say it was kind of gross though, eating a peach while the air reeked of fish! We decided to eat them out in the fresh ... read more

Oh boy…I still have so many little things left to do and I leave in less than five hours sleep. Guess I won’t be sleeping tonight. Ah well, some things never change. Today, though, I bit the bullet and bought my Around the World ticket. Here is a basic breakdown of the next seven months: Where and When Sept 5, 2007 (yikes!) - Seattle to Brussels with an eight hour layover in Dublin. Then from Brussels, it’s a short train to Brugge where Fiona and I start the European Leg. October 25ish - London to see new niece and stay with Fiona’s brother Andrew. Nov 2, 2007 - Fiona* heads back to Victoria BC. Nov 7, 2007ish - Julia** joins me after her European guided tour ends. We will continue another month in Europe to explore ... read more

We camped at Mt. Ranier on Weds night...we got into the campgrounds at about 7pm. We did the "primitive" camping for the night, no showers!! We didn't have much with us, so we improvised...we set up the tent, then we collected fire wood (shhh you're not supposed to!) and Jared made a fire. We ate peanut butter sandwiches by the fire and then watched a slide show form Jared's bike trip. We got up early and went for a short hike. We walked across some huge logs (over running water)...not being the balance queen, I was hesitant at first. After overcoming my fear (it was fairly short lived) I followed Jared across the logs. We walked around for a while, then took down the tent and headed up to the mountain. We stopped at the Information ... read more

Today was not a very fun day. I got about 25% up the mountain and had a significant equipment failure. One of my panniers also bit the dust.....the clup just snapped off. Anyway, I got a boost for about 35 miles to winthrop where I was able to get to a bike shop and continue on. I went up Loup Loup pass which wasn't too bad and stayed in Tonasket. I made about 130 miles, but only about 85 under my own power. Tonasket is the desert. It is significantly different from the western cascades and none of it good. It is about 90 degrees and very sunny. I am going through water and ibuprophen like candy. The passes are sginificantly easier going east. The East side of Washington and Loup loup passes are much steeper ... read more

North America » United States » Washington » Anacortes September 4th 2007

Starting out near anacortes. I decided to start about 5 or so miles from the original start point because of a narrow bridge full of trucks I didn't want to go over in the dark or early morning. Still started on the coast at baybridge. I have a lot of stuff. 2 panniers and a trailer. Climbing up from sea level was a challenge in the rain. I made it to mile marker 104, so I probably traveled about 95-100 miles today. I had a close encounter with a truck which bent my rear axle and scuffed up my knee. The bent axle made climbing more challenging than it needed to be, but I didn't really notice it until after I had stopped for lunch. Anyway, tommorow is the real climbing day.... read more
