Howdy all, As most of you know we are leaving the beautiful northwest shortly and will be traveling through France, Spain and Portugal for the month of July. We won't be making international phone calls home. Sorry moms and dads. In part this is because we've had enough of international calling trying to use our broken French and Spanish at 1 AM to book our lodging. Also, international phone calls are a bit more expensive than this free, modern version of post cards. So we we will be keeping in touch through this blog. Watch for photos and stories and feel free to leave comments/correspondence. Minette and I are traveling by ourselves from June 30 to July 19 in true honeymoon fashion. Later we'll pick up Ann and Zerian in Madrid and do some family ... read more

After 30 minutes of being on hold with the feds, they couldn't help. Even though Minette and I are leaving in 4 days, Zerian and Ann are leaving in three weeks. That is clearly outside the 2 week window which qualifies one for help. So, another 30 minutes on hold with the feds and a slight distortion of the truth--July 18th is two weeks away, right?--and Zerian's passport is "being expedited." This means that Alice on the phone has sent an email to someone in Seattle. Now, once the passport is lifted from their backlog and 'expedited' Fed EX will be overnighting the passport from the Seattle processing center to our house in Seattle, which will be empty, as Minette and I will more than likely be leaving before Z's passport arrives. So I will happily ... read more

(For you guys who are not familiar with Washington State geography, Mt Vernon(city) is approximately 20 miles south of Bellingham.) Surprisingly, after almost 100 miles of riding and 10+ hrs of saddle time the day before, Rene and I woke up today with nothing more than sore butts, luckily! Our legs felt fresh and strong for what laid ahead, another 80 or so miles to Vancouver B.C. After Starbucks and a hearty breakfast at Denny’s, we left Mt. Vernon and headed north, to Bellingham. The roads to Bellingham were not easy, with our sore glutes, the last thing we needed was a rough road. After miles and miles of bone-jarring pedaling, the road pointed up, and up, and up, and then became curvy. To increase the stress, this 2-lane, narrow highway became “shoulder-less”, ay yay ... read more

Welcome to TEAM ZOIC TravelBlog... After a stressful morning of making sure we had everything we need for this bicycle tour, after a long drive from P-Town, and after experiencing Seattle rush-hour traffic, we're finally here! Seattle, the point my friend Rene and I both chose to start our accumulation of miles (kilometers in Canada, of course) travelling on our aluminum steeds, our bicycles, to experience multi-day touring, "roughing it" and sometimes, "hostelling" it :) Since 2000, Rene and I have ridden countless miles together including the yearly classic, Seattle to Portland ride. This year, instead of riding the "double century" STP, we have decided to at least double the "double century"(400miles instead of 200). We have decided to ride to Vancouver B.C., and depending on the amount of time we have, we might even ... read more

After taking the obligatory "group picture" we pile into our car (the Buick) and head NORTH on I5. Traffic is tollerable and in 2.5 hrs we arrive at the Holland America Boarding Terminal. First get luggage out of car and checked through security (X-rayed), then join long line with the proper papers in hand and file through several stations filling out forms, showing picture ID, and getting our picture key cards for the ship. Next board the LONG gangway with two right angle turns and enter the side of the ship. We show our key cards to be scanned and watch our picture show up on the computer screen - what newfangled things will they think of next? We begin to find our way around the ship - locate our room- no luggage yet so ... read more

Well, I have my backpack packed and ready go to on my trip tomorrow! I'm quite excited though sad to say goodbye to my family (I'm always crying when I say goodbye to them, whether I want to or not, haha). I have a few more maintenance things and paperwork to deal with, but I think I'm pretty much ready to go. I thought my flight was at 1pm tomorrow, but I looked at my eticket last night and it's actually flying out at 7:45 am. And I'm not flying through Chigaco O'Hare, I'm flying through Washington DC. Great Myia, you're so prepared! Here's a link to a map that shows the route that I'll be taking: Myia's Route Well, that's that and my next post will be from Rome! Ciao, Myia... read more

June 16, 2007 - We’re at Olympic National park in NW Washington for four nights…it’s really remote and beautiful here. More about Washington in a minute but first some random thoughts and observations about Oregon: Oregon is great, the scenery is fantastic. We spent a couple of weeks among 4 coastal state parks and one inland park and enjoyed them all. Oregon is very liberal and ecology minded; the entire coast is public land, there are no private beaches, there’s no sales tax; they don’t put any fluoride in the water, at the campgrounds the trash dumps have bins labeled (no kidding) clear glass, brown glass, green glass, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, newsprint, cardboard and finally Trash!! You’re not allowed to pump your own gas (I’m serious). There are little drive thru Expresso stands on ... read more
