As I was sitting at the entrance of the Blue Ridge Parkway after completing my ride, another bicyclist stopped for a chat. During the conversation I asked him where the closest food was and he informed me it was back down the mountain in Waynesboro. Since he lived close by, he offered to take me to dinner. Dan and his daughater Arin picked me up and we went down to a great restaurant in Waynesboro called “The Green Leaf Grill”. The food was really great! I got my salad fix along with some delicious French Onion Soup. Then he dropped me off at the Kroger for a few minutes so I could get a few provisions. What was going to most likely be a nutrition bar and popcorn dinner became a great meal. The bicycle community ... read more

What a day! I think it was an early test! I barely passed! I’ll admit it wasn’t much fun today at all! Last night after looking at the weather at numerous sites, I could not find one that would help me out! They all said rain all day! Darn! After Gary, ( the fine fellow I stayed with last night) looked at my Adventure Cycling route, he convinced me I could cut off 10 miles by following another route. Since he was also a bicyclist, and he assured me the route wasn’t any more unsafe than the route I mapped out, I decided to follow his advice. BAD IDEA!!! For the first 20 miles, I found myself on a very busy two lane highway with bountiful rain! NO FUN! I even got passed by the most ... read more

Not a lot to talk about today. I started early because the weather report showed heavy showers on the way. I rode pretty hard all day hoping I could minimize the wetness. I did stop and spend some time at Patric Henry’s home which was only 1/2 mile off my route. Tom is the caretaker of the property and although it was quite early, he strolled out to welcome me and gave me a personal tour of the property. I really wished I could stay longer but the sky was getting darker by the minute. On the way to Mineral, I was waved down by a delightful woman named Susan. She told me about the local thrift shop with FREE food a block off the route. How could I pass that up? I thanked them profusely ... read more

Today was sweltering hot! About 90+ degrees and 90% humidity. After stopping in Jamestown settlement for a quick walk through, I rode about 40 miles and stopped in to meet a fellow Veteran named Henry Hays (picture below) . Henry is the Commander of the American Legion Post 61, 3rd district of Virginia. He served in Turkey in the 1960’s. What a great human being. I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, and he picked up the tab! Thanks Henry! After lunch I rode the next 25 miles with another adventure seeker named Tom Galka. We found out we had a lot in common. Tom is a retired software engineer from IBM. He also had the Trans Am on his bucket list. We will probably ride together tomorrow as well. Although I had made reservations and planned ... read more

Today started out poorly and really was a challenge most of the day. My fancy new Garmin 1030 would not work at all. Long story but the Garmin Guy basically told me the software was corrupted and the best option is to dump everything and start over!!! Well...... I had 78 days of carefully planned routes in there and no way to put them back in! The good news is that I loaded and threw in my old Garmin 1000 just in case! Yahoo! So I was back up and running! Tom, my new acquaintance and I rode all day together to Ashland in “on and off” rain! It was so hot and steamy that neither of us wore any rain gear with the exception of my shoe covers. The glasses got so fogged up we ... read more

Even though I am extremely anxious to get going, I had another tourist day in Williamsburg. If you a lover of History, this is a great place to visit. Colonial Williamsburg is immaculately preserved and there are over 50 sites, homes, trades, taverns and shops to experience. It is sort of a Disneyland of Colonial History. There are costumed guides in each and every building, including the King Arms Tavern where I had lunch. I spent all day in Williamsburg and covered perhaps 1/3 of the opportunity’s available. I enjoyed the day but am ready to roll. Finally, I’m off to Charles City tomorrow.... read more

What a great day! The weather was perfect and I had the leisure of cruising around Yorktown all day. Bicycle is the easiest way to do it. I think I had a chance to read every Historical Marker in the National Park. It actually put shivers up my spine to realize this is where the United States began. For twelve days in October 1781, the American Army under George Washington aided by 5500 French soldiers and 34 French ships laid siege to General Cornwallis smaller Army. In October 19,1781 Cornwallis signed the Articles of surrender. I realized today that without the help of the French we probably would not be a country! Although the Revolutionary War lasted another two years, Yorktown was considered the defining victory. Today I got to take it all In and I ... read more

Today was mostly consumed by pulling the bike parts out of the box, putting it back together, followed by a 20 mile test ride. I found Williamsburg to be a beautiful place. As someone who basically grew up on the West Coast, I find it fascinating to see people going on about their lives in a town that goes back to the very early 18th Century. Every building I saw in The Old and New parts of town was beautifully restored or made to look like it belonged. Everything was neat and tidy. Thanks to the lifelong mission of Dr. W.A. Goodwin, and a the money of John D Rockefeller, Colonial Williamsburg has been restored to replicate its hay day as the Seat of Virginia’s British governed Capital. As I peddled through the many streets of ... read more

If today is an indication of how my luck will go, I feel very fortunate! My goal today was a simple one. Catch an 0800 United flight out of San Diego to Washington Dulles, connect to the Norfolk flight and take an Uber to my lodging near Williamsburg. It couldn’t have gone smoother. Once arriving in Norfolk my Uber driver was a fine fellow named Tommie. He drives a Limo by day and moonlights as an Uber driver when he wants a little pocket change. His vehicle was immaculate and the 40 mile ride to the Yorktown/Cheatham Navy Annex felt like a limo ride. I called the Annex earlier today and they gave me the bad news that Uber’s were not allowed on Base. So I assumed I would have to walk the 3/4 mile to ... read more

On the 10th and 11th, I spent exploring Civil War sites. On the way to Gettysburg, I did a quick stop in Harpers Ferry, West Virgini. I would have spent more time there but it was raining pretty hard. Very quaint old town. I arrived into Gettysburg and tried again to get an individual guide that would come into my car with me. When I tried to make reservations before, all of the guides were booked. When I arrived, I was very lucky and I was able to book a guide to give me an individual tour. I learned so much about the part of the Civil War that occurred in Gettysburg. The three day battle took place on July 1-3, 1863. I learned the position of the troops and the chances/mistakes that were made. My ... read more
