Today we enjoyed breakfast outside on the patio at our Holiday Inn Express in Chadron, Nebraska. I had fun showing Ed the pancake machine. It’s one that you just push a button and it makes your pancake and shoots them out on your plate! It doesn’t take much to entertain me!! I am starting to get my taste back but just certain things. Today I ate a piece of bacon that tasted like bacon. I still can’t taste coffee or many, many other foods! AND I still can’t smell!! Our goal today was South Dakota. What I love about our group is that if we see a sign for a place that looks interesting we stop or head that direction. So today we saw a sign for Wind Cave National Park so we decided we should ... read more

First of all, John and I want to wish my baby brother, David M, and our good friend Barb A very Happy Birthdays! We hope you both have wonderful ones. Love you!! We pulled out of camp at 9:15 heading directly to the local library in hopes of good WiFi. The folks there were very accommodating and I was soon busily at work getting yesterday’s blog out. Leaving the library at 10:30, Spearfish Canyon was our next excursion. Leaving the town of Spearfish on the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, we were soon back in the Black Hills. It was a very nice drive and we expect it would be spectacular in the Fall when the Aspen and Beech trees turn. It was pretty today but in comparison to the drives in the Mount Rushmore area, it ... read more

We were up super early (for us) this morning—5:30 AM. We followed our plan to get to the laundromat first thing, arriving there at 8:00! Yay us!! We did our clothes, had breakfast, and were on the road at 9:30. Our first stop was at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead (pronounced “leed”) South Dakota. This was a great stop. We took an hour trolley tour of the old mining town of Lead and then a short overview of the Sanford Underground Research Facility which is in the old Homestake Mine tunnels. If you are interested in the “sciencey” part of this, I recommend looking it up on Google. They are in the process of building the world’s flagship Neutrino Experiment. An international team of 1,000 scientists and engineers from more than 30 countries ... read more

Saturday July 4th Here we are on another adventure and this time we are heading to the Canadian Rockies! We left Friday morning and got on the road by ten am. We made it to coreyville Iowa and had a nice dinner at a place called thirty hops. Geez, what luck, a pub less than two minutes from our hotel! Had a nice dinner and had another stroke of luck and found a brewery five minutes away. So, we had a beer and headed back to the hotel for some rest. Day two found us heading to Spearfish SD. Long day of driving but we are listening to the Unbroken book (on tape) and keeping us captivated enough to not notice the duldrums of the drive. What a story! Anyway, we took a detour to see ... read more

2014 09 07 Day 6 Because we didn't get back to the motel until midnight, we slept in. Last night we decided that instead of driving four hours round trip to see Jewel Cave National Park, we would spend the day seeing Deadwood and relaxing. We left the motel around 10, got gas and got the car washed to remove the seven layers of bugs from the front of the car. We drove to Deadwood (about 15 miles) and had a very nice breakfast at Lee St. Station. We then walked through Deadwood which has absolutely nothing to see, unless you like to look at touristy shops with overpriced junk they call souvenirs, or casinos. The welcome center had a small exhibit detailing the history of Deadwood. Deadwood originally was Sioux land. While Custer and his ... read more

2014 09 06 Day 5 We decided to say in Spearfish for 3 nights so we wouldn't have to rush to see everything we wanted to see. Yesterday made us very weary. We slept late and went to breakfast in the motel at 9:41. The food was OK, but the service was abysmal. The waitress brought a carafe of coffee to the table and didn't provide any cream. The next time we saw her was at least ten – fifteen minutes later when she brought out our food. By that time the coffee was cold. She put the check on our table while we were eating, and we never saw her again. When we were done eating, we waited at least five minutes before we decided to chase down someone to pay our bill. Chris walked ... read more

2014 09 05 Day 4 We decided, geniuses that we are, that we didn't need to each have our own suitcase, we could combine our clothes, etc. into one suitcase and eliminate the need to bring two suitcases into the motel room each night. So we consolidated two suitcases into one. These suitcases are smaller suitcases that would fit into the overhead compartments on a plane. We also have a larger suitcase jammed full that we don't bring into the room each night. I think we packed enough for a two year journey. I emptied the trunk to store unneeded item in the wheel well, and carefully repacked the trunk. When we got in the car at 8:51 to leave Sioux City, the tire pressure indicator light was on. Unfortunately the tire pressure gauge was in ... read more

So K-State started their fall semester on Monday and I officially began my last course for my master's program on Tuesday. :) It was SO amazing to be able to see my grad classmates via the internet and video chat. I didn't realize I'd missed them or K-State so much until that day. BHSU moves into the res halls on Sunday and will begin a crazy busy week of Green & Gold Orientation activities. This week, i've been frantically trying to get ready for the Downtown Block Party that i mentioned in my last blog. While I had a great few days off for vacation around the Hills w/ my family last week, I'm definitely paying for not being at work. I have put in 10-12 hour days the past 2-3 days this week and will ... read more

So, I realize its been over a month since I last blogged. I apologize to anyone who's been anxiously waiting on a blog entry...although the only person who's been asking is my mother. :) July is now over and I finished my last summer course ending the summer with a 4.0! Which means I am now 3 credit hours (my fall practicum) and taking comps away from being done with my master's degree!! Super excited for December 7, 2012! :) July was filled with a few New Student Registration dates, Preview Days for prospective students, and attending a few on campus meetings and sitting on a search committee to fill the open position in my office. I'm super excited for Erika who will be joining us in a few weeks from NJ and is one energetic, ... read more

It really is amazing when you realize that what you learn in class actually does pay off in the real world! I just finished attending an all-staff Student Life meeting where I heard a presentation from the director of Financial Aid as well as from the Dean of Students about the Student Success Center. As I listened about financial aid, I learned why I can't get a subsidized loan for the fall as a grad student as well as that upon graduation, the 6 month grace period is still in place but the federal government will no longer be paying the interest during that time - isn't that just peachy? Next, during the Student Success Center update, they talked about their visit from the consultant and shared his report. As I listened to that update, I ... read more
