Whew! Long day today (900 mkilometers) and also saw our first rain! But, eventually things cleared up and the scenery was awesome! We did our first “backtracking” for approx. 600 kilometers, but that’s ok, the scenery looked different going the opposite way! We also saw our first "elusive" moose! Unfortunately, we didn't get any pictures since we were driving 100 kmh down the Trans Canada Highway. When I said to Janet "there's a moose", the moose seemed to of heard me and she looked right at us (I think my imagination was running a little wild at the time). We also saw a van that had hit a moose earlier in the day and the van was a mess. We also saw on the news that the person who hit the moose was taken to the ... read more

We're running out of days in Canada, but we are still seeing some cool sites. We headed north out of Charlottetown up to the north coast and walked on the red sandy shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The water was pretty cold but people still swim in it. We didn't see anybody swimming when we were there as it was only 65 degrees. Lots of cottages everywhere and it looks to be a very popular place for Canadian summer vacations. We stopped at a local market and purchased a bag of new potatos. There are potato farms everywhere on the island, and the dirt is red. We also stopped at the House of Green Gables in Cavendish and that was interesting. Just stayed long enough to snap a few photos and then we headed ... read more

Ah, a whole day and nowhere to go! well, nowhere in the car anyway. Slept in a bit and had a nice free breakfast at the hotel and headed out for a walk to downtown Charlottetown. Very cool old buildings and houses and churches. Saw a place called Beaton's Wholesale, so we stopped in to look around (since Janet's ancestors that lived in Iris were the Beaton's). Not much there so we moved on. Well, wouldn't you know, we found a local brewery! The Gahon House Brewery. So, we stopped in for a bite to eat (and a beer or two). Yes, Patsy, the Canadian Pub Crawl continues! We liked the stout so much we bought a growler (a 64 oz. jug). It is resting comfortably in our hotel fridge. After taking it easy and lounging ... read more

Had a nice breakfast at the McDonald Country Inn and hit the road. But, first we stopped to chat with Ann Marie at the visitor center in St. Peter's Nova Scotia. We stopped there the previous day, so I feel we are now on a first name basis (plus she shares the same name as my little sister). She gave us some information on the ferry to PEI (Prince Edward Island) and off we went. We drove a little out of the way up the west coast of Cape Breton Island to enjoy some nice scenery. We then drove on to Pictou to catch the ferry and missed the 2:45 ferry by 5 minutes! But, that gave us an opportunity to walk around the docks and look at all the fishing boats. We even met a ... read more

We stepped foot onto Nova Scotia around noon (back to Atlantic time), and had beautiful weather! Stopped at Tim Horton's (which there is one in most every town), by North Sydney and then headed to our Inn. We kinda got confused about the location of this inn, but after stopping and talking to a nice man (who we got off of his mower) we found our way. Another one of the many nice folks we've met along the way. The inn is in a small town called St. Peter's and we were able to walk a nice trail along the shores of the bay. We stumbled across a canal that is still operating and helps boats navigate from the Atlantic ocean to the Bras D'or Lake. Met a nice young lady who worked for the park ... read more

Got to sleep in a bit and left hotel around 10:30 and headed to St. John's. The scenery along the way was fantastic! Lots of water and mountains, but still no moose sightings (much to our dismay). Arrived in St. John's around 2 and checked into the nicest room yet. Our room is right on the harbor and looks like a cabin from the inside. Went and had a bite to eat at the Yellow Belly Brewery and had seafood chowder and a Yellow Belly Red Ale. Then went next door to the Celtic Hearth and had another (Janet wanted a Guiness). Then walked around town looking at the sites and we stumbled upon the St. John The Baptist Basilica and started snapping photos. We then realized it was 5:10 and there was a 5PM mass ... read more

Had a little trouble with the wifi at the hotel last night... Well, today was a long day. Had to be at the ferry terminal by 9:15 for a 10:45 ferry and arrived at St. Barbe at 12:45. Met a nice couple from the Toronto area and they had driven the same route as us and we shared stories. He had just retired and this was their first “retirement trip”. They were fortunate enough to have not been able to get a room at the hotel we stayed at in Churchill Falls, but they also spent the night in their car on the road (they couldn’t get out of their car to set up their tent because the black flies and mosquitos were too bad). Met another couple that left Goose Bay at 9PM and drove ... read more

Gor up early and left hotel by 6:30 and hit the (gravel) road. The road was very good for most of the way and that was another treat! Not too long after we were on the road I noticed a small animal on a bridge that we just crossed. So, I stopped and for some reason this animal started heading towards us. At first we thought it was a stray cat, but the closer it got we soon realized it was a fox! Not sure what type of fox, but I think it was an arctic fox. And, it came right up to us like we had something for it. Very peculiar. We snapped a few photos and moved on. Then a mile or so later I noticed a grouse sitting in the middle of the ... read more

Got an early start after a night at one of the worst hotels we’ve ever stayed in. First off, we drove past the place twice before we even realized it was a hotel. Then, as we’re checking in we notice a sign about a boil water advisory. Then while the young man was trying to fix our remote control, he proceeds to tell us that the water they served us at the hotel was not boiled. We then went for a walk to get some much needed exercise, (and receiving a few black fly/stout fly bites) we return back to our room and proceed to have upset stomachs and needing a bathroom. And, the walls were like paper and you could hear every word in the room next door. Even, the awful singing the lady was ... read more

Slept in this morning and then headed to the tackle shop to get some flies and fishing license. Then to McDonald's for some orange juice and coffee (no free breakfast at the hotel). Then we stopped and picked up a free satelite phone for our journey across Labrador. About an hour outside of town we stopped to fish. Saw a ton of trout but none willing to bite (except for one that was about 3 inches). Back on road which was paved for first 100 kilometers (another treat), but then turned to the nasty gravel. We even saw people on motorcycles, which had to be a rough ride. Stopped a couple more times along the way (to fish) to Churchill Falls but still no luck. Arrived at Churchhill Falls around 5PM (Atlantic time). Pretty interesting town ... read more
