So K-State started their fall semester on Monday and I officially began my last course for my master's program on Tuesday. :) It was SO amazing to be able to see my grad classmates via the internet and video chat. I didn't realize I'd missed them or K-State so much until that day. BHSU moves into the res halls on Sunday and will begin a crazy busy week of Green & Gold Orientation activities. This week, i've been frantically trying to get ready for the Downtown Block Party that i mentioned in my last blog. While I had a great few days off for vacation around the Hills w/ my family last week, I'm definitely paying for not being at work. I have put in 10-12 hour days the past 2-3 days this week and will ... read more

So, I realize its been over a month since I last blogged. I apologize to anyone who's been anxiously waiting on a blog entry...although the only person who's been asking is my mother. :) July is now over and I finished my last summer course ending the summer with a 4.0! Which means I am now 3 credit hours (my fall practicum) and taking comps away from being done with my master's degree!! Super excited for December 7, 2012! :) July was filled with a few New Student Registration dates, Preview Days for prospective students, and attending a few on campus meetings and sitting on a search committee to fill the open position in my office. I'm super excited for Erika who will be joining us in a few weeks from NJ and is one energetic, ... read more

It really is amazing when you realize that what you learn in class actually does pay off in the real world! I just finished attending an all-staff Student Life meeting where I heard a presentation from the director of Financial Aid as well as from the Dean of Students about the Student Success Center. As I listened about financial aid, I learned why I can't get a subsidized loan for the fall as a grad student as well as that upon graduation, the 6 month grace period is still in place but the federal government will no longer be paying the interest during that time - isn't that just peachy? Next, during the Student Success Center update, they talked about their visit from the consultant and shared his report. As I listened to that update, I ... read more

Time to recap the past 48 hours or so! On Thursday, I attended a meeting for Green and Gold Days (Orientation/Welcome Week) and agreed to help my supervisor with some projects for that, coming up with new ideas, etc. Then, I attended a "Garden Party" lunch where the campus garden intern and the director of food services talked about the campus garden, plans for that, healthy eating, and new ideas for the fall semester. That afternoon, I helped weed in the campus garden for 2 hours, then I showered and took off for Deadwood to see my cousin! My cousin, Erin, was in Deadwood the past few days for a conference - at the end of the night, I still didn't really understand what type, so I'm just going to say some medical type conference and ... read more

I know I haven't written in several days...I've been doing homework a lot of the time. I haven't gotten a chance yet to really get out and explore the Black Hills or surrounding areas much. They also haven't really given me any tasks, projects, work, etc. I'm hoping they do soon...otherwise I'll just be doing a lot of homework while overlooking the pretty scenery. One thing I did want to comment on...last Friday I got to help Jane, my boss, with the Downtown Friday Nights event. That was the first week for it of the summer and we helped with the Kiddie Carnival and games. I'm hoping this week she may have enough volunteers lined up that I can actually enjoy the concert and other vendors. :) Saturday night, I went to the Vice-President for Student ... read more

I've officially completed my first day working at BH and what a day it has been! I woke up early this morning to try to get some homework done (didn't get as much accomplished as I had hoped). Then I was supposed to have met Jane, my direct supervisor and Director of the Student Union at 9 am. I got to her office in the Union but found her meeting with someone. Upon sitting outside her office, I heard the other person's voice escalate in tone and anger. Jane calmly informed him he was being beligerent and to calm down and that she was following protocol and trying to help him. Over the next 45 minutes as I sat outside her office (and yes eavesdropping, but it was hard not to), I realized that this was ... read more

So...I made the 9+ hour trip today with relatively no problems...left home at 7:30 a.m....decided to take an entirely different route once I got to North Platte, NE. Ended up going further west on I-80, at some point along there crossed into Mountain Time Zone (phone changed and noticed it way later and there was no giant sign like on I-90 to inform you of the change). Drove through way more of Nebraska than I care to since I bleed purple, not red. However, the drive was perhaps a tad quicker than my previous route and even a bit more scenic. Drove past Western Nebraska Community College and also Chadron State College. I recalled that President Schallenkamp worked at Chadron before coming to ESU so I decided to detour for a bit and drove around campus ... read more

Tomorrow, I leave early in the morning to make the 10 hour trip to Spearfish, SD. I'll spend the night in a hotel since they aren't expecting me on campus until the afternoon. I could've broken the trip up over two days, but decided I'm too anxious to already be in Spearfish and this will give me time to explore a bit more and just relax...and also use Monday morning to get a jumpstart on my 2 summer online courses which start on the 4th! :) I'm going to attempt to blog daily and add photos as I take them (once I find my camera...I was going to take pictures along the way but cannot seem to remember where I packed it or find it just by shuffling a few things around in my car). For ... read more
