Arizona, here we come (with dengue fever!) So we left Central America behind us and flew to Phoenix, Arizona where we arrived on September 21st. Straight after dropping our bags off at the hotel we got a taxi to Scottsdale Hospital which although wasn´t the closest hospital to the hotel in Phoenix, was recommended by the receptionist as being nicer and probably having shorter queues. Well our initial consult wasn´t too long a wait, and about an hour later both of us had been set up on a drip in triage and been pocked and prodded having a few tests. After a few hours they were no closer to working out what was wrong with us, but they decided that I would be admitted and Patrick not. So Patrick went back to the hotel and I ... read more

After leaving Texas- apparently the best place in America according to the Texan cowboy even though he had been to less places in the USA than us- basically if it's not in Texas then it must be rubbish seems to be their philosophy we headed to Oklamoma and then on to New Mexico. Wed 29th Sept- Our inn was just outside an area of downtown called bricktown so we took a taxi so that we could go and explore. We went to the monument for the victims of a terror attack in the city which was very moving. There was a chair cast out of bronze for each person that died in the attack plus a tree to remember those that survived and a reflecting pool. We then took the trolley around the city but there ... read more

Greetings and Salutations from Oklahoma! Bella, Jojo, The Dude, Mischa and myself traveled another 500+ miles today! Joanna decided to give the cats their "special" medicine prior to leaving this morning and it definitely kept them very calm. Or very scared. I'm really not sure. Joanna was freaking out because their inner eyelids were half closed causing them to look lizard like. And Dude managed to hide underneath the backseat which we were not even aware was possible. All in all though, they were quiet and slept most of the time. We left Albuquerque this morning and took a look at the old town before jumping on the I-40. It was very small and quaint. We then proceeded to drive towards Oklahoma City. New Mexico has beautiful landscapes that we enjoyed looking at very much. Upon ... read more

A l-o-n-g day in the airplane! I was not ready to leave Tanzania, but once we actually left, I couldn't wait to get home! Wish I had Aladdin's magic carpet! :) We arrived in Amsterdam, Holland, at 10 AM Saturday morning. It was an 11 hour flight from Kilimanjaro to there! No joke! (We had to stop at Dar Es Salaam before heading on). While in the airport, we bought some Belgium chocolate. Ummm....delectable!! :) Lexi got detained once again at security. She DID have a pocket knife in her backpack that she had forgotten about. Thankfully, all they did was confiscate the knife, and let her on the airplane. It took 9 hours to fly from Amsterdam to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Talk about torture! That seemed like the longest 9 hours of my life. Oh, and ... read more

The journey along the most famous road in the world started in earnest as we left Amarillo behind. We drove north east with Oklahoma City our planned destination and we really didn't know what to expect on the way. Route 66 isn't a major highway or thoroughfare these days. In some places it joined the main interstate and in others it was a single lane virtual dirt track. For this reason we didn't know where we would be passing through and in what state of repair the motels and businesses would be that we would need to use on our route. The first "main" town we hit was Mclean. I say "main" as it was what we describe as a village in the UK and seemed to be pretty much a ghost town. We needed lunch ... read more

Ok, this is too many OK's for me!!! ..... Great day of traveling... route 40 from Memphis to OK City is rough.. but we're here at the Hyatt Place and it's a great hotel! ... SO let's start from this morning... left the Comfort Inn hotel at 9 (ok for a three star hotel... but it must have been three stars out of ten instead of five!) and then proceeded to Graceland! WOW! We did the three hour tour, the three hour tour... the weather starting getting rough the tiny ship ... sorry, wrong three hour tour... Elvis' history was interesting... as Towana said, he had everything someone could want or even need... flew his daughter one day to Colorado just so she could play in the snow for 45 minutes ... but we left sad ... read more

Geo: 35.472, -97.5203The trip from Amarillo began as dry scrubby ranchland but eventually became rolling hills, larger trees and green fields. Ranching and oil seem to be the sources of revenue. Oklahoma City is a very modern economic centre. We went downtown and took the guided boat ride on a canal which is a part of the downtown redevelopment. We then walked through the city and visited the site of the Oklahoma bombing in 1995. A memorial has been created at the site. The city is very busy with several conventions as well as a gathering of hot rods several of which are at the hotel. Guests at the hotel are sitting in lawn chairs by the side of the road watching as the hot rods pass by. Tonorrow we head into Arkansas.... read more

Oklahoma reeks! When we crossed the state line - and I mean right when we crossed the state line - it immediately smelled of burnt onions. Wtf, Okla? So, needless to say, we're safely in lovely Oklahoma. I'm not really sure if it's lovely because it was dark when we got here, but the odoriferous welcome leaves me doubting that possibility. So, before leaving St. Louis this morning, we enjoyed a glorious complimentary breakfast buffet. Who knew we loved biscuits and gravy?! It was the first time having them for both of us, and we loved it. The fresh fruit was nice, too, especially when we knew it was probably going to be fast food later. (It was.) Then we drove on over to the Arch. It was a wicked cold morning, but the Arch looked ... read more

Here it is, the final stretch on our journey down the "mother road". We have spent the past week in a Dodge Magnum driving across farm land, cruising through half forgotten towns, and eating the best American food you could ask for. I have to say, I am quite familiar with the interior of the car, but it has proven to be the ultimate American grand tourer. Sure, I may not need 340 hp for this trip which is primarily 45 or 55 mph speed limits, but it is always nice to have it on tap. Our last excursion took us through El Reno, onto Geary, across the famous 38 truss "Pony Bridge" featured in the 1939 classic film "The Grapes of Wrath" starring Henry Fonda. We counted the trusses, and they are all still there. ... read more
