Our Family's Visit to The Oklahoma City Memorial Site During our trip down to Oklahoma to be involved in a friend's wedding last week, we had a few extra hours between checkout time at the hotel and time to arrive for the wedding, so we took the kids downtown to the memorial site of the Oklahoma City Bombing. It was serene, still, peaceful, quite, and breath-taking. Brent was a firefighter in the Air Force when this happened, and the kids were too little to even remember it, so as we walked through the memorial we had to explain to our 3 small children of how horrible this was and the tragedy that struck the nation as a whole as we sat back in disbelief of the terror striking in Middle America. ... read more

If you were wondering why it’s been quiet, pull out a map and take a look. We started in Atlanta which was about 5 hours from Nashville or should have been except for that typical huge thunderstorm which had us driving at 30mph for quite a ways. When we got there it was pretty wet and we couldn’t do much (we took lunch at a RainForest Café). Then it was another 5 hours to Little Rock where we did have a chance to go to a waterpark (but other than getting wet and having fun there is not much more to say). Then it should have been another 5 hours to OK city except we ran into a huge traffic accident which took 1.5 hrs to clear. So here I am in OK city without much ... read more

In March, I was sent down to Oklahoma City for some work. I was actually somewhat excited about being sent there. I'd traveled many times thru this city, but had never really stopped in it (except for gas). It was time for me to get to see what OKC was really about. Turns out that the town was actually quite nice. Though, I still don't think I'll be moving there anytime soon. They've done a lot of work with trying to revitalize downtown. They've built a new minor league ballpark, new arena and a new riverwalk. They also had some good places to sit down and eat. Cattlemans was my favorite of the town. It was your classic old style steak house. Made some time to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial. A very somber experience. ... read more

So dragging ourselves out of bed to leave Denver, we planned and plotted our next move. The South beckoned. However sleeping in was much more important, naturally, so we left Denver at around 4 after a lunch of garlic bread..big hugs to our host Matt who kindly burned us some music - boo for dying ipods! We headed South through Colorado, arriving in the agricultural crossroads town of Lamar just as darkness fell. Goodbye hostels, hello motels! Calling it an early night, we settled into our motel room for movies, fast food and sleep. Oklahoma! Keeping to our '5 minutes after checkout time' rule, we got going the next morning to head further South, braving skunk and deer roadkill and the endless fields of Oklahoma... after mile upon mile of farm, we got a glimpse of ... read more

Our third leg of Savanna Studio 2001 began in Oklahoma City, after a long drive from Iowa. With our mind set of traveling south, we were surprised to find out that Oklahoma City was almost as cold as Iowa. Some of us didn't care, upon our arrival in our hotel around 9 pm, we were changing into our swimming suits and jumped into the hotel's outdoor swimming pool, which turned out to be so cold. For a couple of seconds after jumping, I couldn't decide whether the water was very hot or very cold; I felt like thousands of needles piercing through my skin. The highligh of Oklahoma City was the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, where a bomb blasted in 1995, killing 168 people including many children. There were some quiet moments within our midst, ... read more
