The Road to Nowhere

Tracy and Patrick

Just like many people out there, we were disillusioned with the job market and the economy generally. So trying to ensure that ´every cloud has a silver lining´ we decided to toss the jobs in, educate ourselves culturally and go see the world a bit. I guess unlike many other people we are lucky enough not to have the commitments some have and be able to afford to take this time out financially. Probably a little more (just a little) flash-packers than backpackers this our 15 month journey to 5 different continents and approximately 30 countries, please join us for the ride on the road to nowhere!

Time on the road to nowhere!

Port Elizabeth As we flew into Port Elizabeth from Joburg I did think to myself the end is nigh with only 9 or 10 days left before heading back to the UK to enjoy Christmas and New Year with family and friends and then start our working lives again. It did dawn on me that being it was the final 9 or 10 days that Tracy and I must go out with a bang. So to start our garden route trip we picked up our extremely small Chevrolet Spark Car, from the airport, that couldn’t fit both our bags in the boot but could with the back seat down and proceeded onto our hostel in Port Elizabeth itself where we would spend the night. I should say at this point that our flight from Joburg to ... read more

Leaving Zambia So on November 29th we had a bit of a lie-in in Livingstone while some of the group went for their viewing of the Victoria Falls (which we had done the previous day). This also meant we had time for a lovely cooked English breakfast by the pool, a bit of luxury in our camping trip! The journey over the river and border back to Botswana was much smoother this time, and we all made it safely, including the truck. The ferry which broke a few days before was still there, so lucky we didn´t wait for it to get fixed! Only a few hours later we arrived at our next overnight stop, Elephant Sands. Elephant Sands This campsite was named because of the great number of elephants it sees visiting the nearby waterhole. ... read more

So on November 21st we said our good byes to the boys and boarded our short flight to Johannesburg to start our Intrepid trip (Southern Explorer, code UOQ for anyone with nothing else to do). We were met at the airport by our pre-booked (ridiculously expensive) taxi to Amadwala Lodge, about an hour away, our Intrepid meeting point. We were eased slowly into the camping with a night in a permanent tent with 2 single beds in quite a nice campsite with pool and bar. I resisted the urge to upgrade to a nice looking cabin.....not on the first night I thought. That evening we met our group around the camp fire (luckily not the one which had another overland group with a girl and a guitar which could get quite annoying after a while I´m ... read more

Well it was the event of the year, well at least it was important enough for Tracy and I to extend our travels by 3-4 months for, yes indeed it was the Wedding of Jaqui Dalton to Gary Richardson in Cape Town, South Africa and for Tracy and I it signaled the begining of the end of our 15 month journey. Cape Town So NYC behind us (sadly) we jumped on the plane and began our 20 hours of flying to get to Cape Town (via Heathrow). We left JFK on time and arrived into Heathrow 30 minutes early, everything looked to be going swimmingly until we were told we couldn´t land as our gate wasn´t ready, so we circled over London for 40 minutes, when we finally landed our gate still wasn´t ready and we ... read more

Roll of the dice.... No sooner had we hit the road leaving Washington behind us heading North Eastish than it started to rain and rain all the way it did right through Baltimore, where we passed the Ravens stadium, past Philadelphia to Atlantic City. Tracy and I have both been to Vegas before, we both loved it and we both wanted to go again on this trip and in hindsight lord knows why we didn´t. I mean we started in Arizona at Phoenix anyway, what difference would a few hundred miles more make and start in Nevada at Vegas, still we didn´t and so instead we decided to see what the poor man´s Vegas was like. Poor is the word. Probably not financially, I mean it has near a dozen or so casinos including the Tropicana ... read more

Pigeon Forge So on October 27th we drove from Nashville to Pigeon Forge (yes that´s the name of the town), at the edge of the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountains. Driving into Pigeon Forge gave the same feeling as driving into Las Vegas, a bit of ooh, aah, and what the hell? All kind of Vegas without the casinos, but with some of the bling and all out cheese. You can´t miss the new Titanic museum which is a big replica of the boat itself right on the side of the road. I did actually miss it with the camera though owing to the pelting rain and 3 lanes of traffic in between me and it. So the picture of the weird Worderworks attraction will have to do. The traffic in the area was awful, ... read more

New Orleans Much to Tracy´s dismay, as she said last time, we left Texas on October 18th and made our way to the home of the big easy, and I am not talking about the home of golfer Ernie Els, no, New Orleans or as the locals call it Nawlins. We arrived in around 6pm to the Queen and Crescent hotel, probably the nicest place we have stayed since the Hilton in Bangkok at Christmas, and immediately did what all tourists do and went and visited the famous Bourbon street in the French Quarter. Well even at 6pm the street was pretty busy with lots of people walking round with beers in hand, wearing, it seemed, hundreds of different bead necklaces and neon lights flickering from everywhere advertising many bars and many exotic dancing bars, otherwise ... read more

Who shot J.R? Our first stop in Texas (from Oklahoma) late on October 9 was the house of Texas´most famous resident (or so I think anyway), J.R. Ewing. Ok so he wasn´t real but who doesn´t remember ´Dallas´, which funnily enough is the town where Southfork Ranch is. This apparently wasn´t J.R´s first home, but after the pilot series the owners of the first ranch said no to additional filming. Probably not a bad decision as after Dallas became popular Southfork Ranch was so besieged by fans that the owners had to move out! Filming was however only done outside, and with clever wide angle lenses (the only real special effects they had then) they made the house and pool look a lot bigger than it is. The owners of the ranch now have obviously turned ... read more

Arizona, here we come (with dengue fever!) So we left Central America behind us and flew to Phoenix, Arizona where we arrived on September 21st. Straight after dropping our bags off at the hotel we got a taxi to Scottsdale Hospital which although wasn´t the closest hospital to the hotel in Phoenix, was recommended by the receptionist as being nicer and probably having shorter queues. Well our initial consult wasn´t too long a wait, and about an hour later both of us had been set up on a drip in triage and been pocked and prodded having a few tests. After a few hours they were no closer to working out what was wrong with us, but they decided that I would be admitted and Patrick not. So Patrick went back to the hotel and I ... read more

Not that we knew it at the time but we were to pay a much higher price than just fatigue and tiredness from our September 10th, 2010, 13km walk at Rincon de la Vieja National Park in Costa Rica, but that is getting ahead of myself and we will come to that. Nicaragua So as I said last time having successfully navigated the shambles of a boarder crossing at Peñas Blancas on Saturday September 11th, we moved on to the beach town San Juan Del Sur. San Juan Del Sur San Juan Del Sur (SJDS) is only 30-40 minutes from the border crossing but it still required us to get a bus and a taxi, if you could call either that. The buses in Central America crack me up, for the most part they are old ... read more
