On Monday, March 15th, we pulled out of Casa Grande, Arizona, and headed for Albuquerque, New Mexico, to attend the FMCA International Rally and a Newmar pre-rally. Day 1 we drove to Holbrook, seeing quite a bit of snow on the ground in the Flagstaff area. After so much time in the desert, we had forgotten it was still winter. If we had known what was coming, we might have turned around! Day 2 we drove to the west side of Albuquerque and got all setup in our rv resort site with about 30 other Newmar motorhomes. The pre-rally is really just an opportunity to reconnect with folks you've met on the road and get together for fun, food, and drinks. Tuesday we had happy hour at 4:00 followed by a bar-b-que dinner at "Rudy's". Wednesday ... read more

Roughly a 4 hour drive east of our house is the Gila National Forest, Gila Wilderness and within, the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Once we were off the main highway and onto the Scenic Byway that leads to & through the park, we were engulfed by trees galore! The byway itself was pretty exciting. There were portions of it that seemed barely wide enough for two passing cars. Luckily for us, we seemed to be the only ones driving the road that day. There was still snow on the ground in places, but the sun was shining & the sky was clear & the brightest of blues. We were unable to park at the regular parking area closest to the dwellings due to the bridge being closed. The west fork of the Gila River had ... read more

Tucumcari New Mexico. I must confess that I grow weary of driving. Sadly, I'm done with less than 1/3rd of the driving I'll need to do on this trip.... read more

We camped the first night at San Felipe Casino, just north of Albuquerque. That night we watched a local new story about Hatch NM, which is on I25 at the junction of the bypass to head west on I10. In Hatch there is a barbeque restaurant, called Sparkeys. Sparky's has a large Pig sign on a trailer. The State if New Mexico has decided that this sign does not comply with some regulations and wants it removed. This story has given the restaurant a lot of free advertising. They now have "Save the pig T-Shirts and other stuff. If you have never been in Hatch, which is the chili pepper capital of NM, there are many very large signs of Chili Peppers. These seem to be ok with the state Because of the story, we made ... read more

Feb 9 Noah and I slid out of Stace’s and Reed’s at 4 AM for the long drive to Alamogordo, New Mexico. The prior evening I watched as Noah, Reed and Stace played on the Wii system. Games of bowling, golf and tennis soon reduced the three of them into whirling grunting laughing human windmills. Noah and I thanked Reed and Stace for their wonderful hospitality. It was difficult to leave their comfortable home and Stace’s dinner table masterpieces but life moves on. I first met Stace when she was two years old. Now a practicing attorney in San Antonio it is gratifying to know that Karen and I played even a small part in her development into the great human being she’s become. I was happy to see strength of her relationship with her husband ... read more

Actually, we kind of did take a left turn at Albuquerque. We're in Los Lunas at Stefanie's cousin's for the night. Before leaving the OKC hotel, we had make-your-own waffles in the hotel lobby, accompanied by the lovely sound of the desk lady hacking. Then she went out for another smoke. Good choice, honey. We had a wild-goose chase for a car wash before we got started on our trip. It was fruitless, but at least we got to see the crap part of town. Yay! Driving through Oklahoma during the day, we realized that the song from the musical is no lie. There really is wind sweepin' down the plains. It blew our cars all over the place. AND tumbleweeds are real!!! ("Like Jesus," as a billboard in Missouri (I think) stated.) First mini tumblers ... read more

Note: Havent been able to update the blog over the past few days.. Hotels without Internet, more hours of driving as we dropped off people along the way, and weeks of travel through changing weather, different altitudes and shifting time zones caught up with us eventually. Unfortunately, that means that I dont remember all the fun, whacky moments from the trip that made it such an enjoyable holiday :( Its those stories, those anecdotes that defined our trip, but nevertheless, heres an overview of what we did end up doing. ************************** We were initally planning to make 3 stops along the way before hitting Vegas on 30th - Roswell (famous for alien UFO landings in 1947) and Albuquerque in New Mexico, and then Flagstaff near the Grand Canyon in Arizona. But Sapna was interested in doing ... read more

Nice driving today! Lots of mountains and great views. Once again we were in the middle of nowhere but beautiful. After crossing El Paso it was very difficult to find a radio station only in english. Not that it really matters, but just like in portuguese and english some types of music are just too much for Terry's and mine taste. The kids are doing great for the amount of driving they are enduring, but at night, they just want to play, jump, be loud and all the stuff they are supposed to be doing during the day but they can't. We can't complain. They like the trip so far. Lucas is usually busy with his electronics and is enjoying the trip as well. The car is doing great, so we decided not to push it ... read more
