OK, we became "Those people": Sandra and I said when we started out that we didn't want to be "mission tourists" so we very purposely told our hosts in El Paso (the very gracious Bowmans of the BEAMM ministry) that we were there to check out the ministry and we didn't need to see any local tourist places. Thankfully, they didn't listen to us and took us to this beautiful spot which I highly recommend to anyone who is in the area. (The White Sands of New Mexico) I have just never seen anything quite like it. Super fine, talcum powder like sand in soft rolling hills with an unbelievable sunset and moonrise. Here are a few of the hundreds of pictures I took... read more

There was heavy rain last night but the sky was clearing this morning when we packed up and got underway at 6 AM. Made it two hours down the road for our first gas stop and found a Denny's. Not as hot today, thank goodness. We didn't have as long of a ride today. Arrived at Gallup and the Historic El Rancho Hotel on Route 66 around 1PM. They gave us the neatest room. All of the rooms are named after old movie stars. We were in the Kirk Douglas room. It had a separate full kitchen and a little porch that opened up to the patio where there is a pool. Only four other rooms did that and nobody was at the pool. Got a late lunch at Earl's which is run by all Native ... read more

We started in the cool of the morning again today at 5 AM. We stopped for breakfast around 9 AM at a Cracker Barrel. Our first planned stop was Tripp's Harley Davidson to purchase our first souvenir T-shirts. Ran into three guys that are on their way to Alaska. They left from Michigan and have already been to Key West. After we left there, it was on to the Cadillac Ranch on Route 66. This was a must as far as George was concerned. Our name is now etched on several of the old painted and rusty vehicles. Today was another hot one. We arrived at our motel around 1:30pm. We stayed at an old historic motel called the Blue Swallow Motel. It was definitely authentic 50's and much nicer than the motel we stayed last ... read more

We woke up this morning in Taos, New Mexico to a chilly breeze coming through the windows and even though I slept like a baby (Advil does that to me), I still didn't feel good. My headache was pretty much gone but my head was stuffy and I was just feeling tired. Tim and I decided we were going back to bed and we would just get up whenever we felt like it. Well, whenever we felt like it was about 11:00 !! It felt so good to get some extra rest after being on the go for almost an entire week. I made us a bowl of cereal while Tim made him some coffee using bottled water because all the water we had was not potable and then we were ready to face the day. ... read more

It was in the 60's last night so we opened the windows and slept like little babies. It was so cool and crisp...I just love this mountain air. So here we are in Las Vegas, New Mexico another one of the many places we've been that I have never heard of and had no idea they existed. It's weird when I stop and think about being back at home in Stockbridge, GA and how far away it is from here and then I think about how much we've seen in the world and how much more there is to see. I wish we could just take everybody with us on these trips so they could see how big and beautiful America really is. There's so much out there and yet so few people really get to ... read more

Built in 1880, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad was part of the San Juan extension of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroads, with tracks running from Denver through the ore-rich Rocky Mountains to Silverton, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Its path was carved through steep passes and deep gorges and was an engineering feat for the time. In the 1890s, the decline of silver mining ended the railroad's vital role and it was later abandoned in 1969, however the most scenic part of its route, its equipment, and its buildings were saved. Today, its a New Mexico & Colorado owned and operated tourist railroad. The railroad yard in the small picturesque town of Chama, New Mexico is open to visitors. One may walk around the area, which is filled with piles of coal and ... read more

After all that Toby Keith excitement I wasn't sure if we would be able to sleep last night but we did and it was great. We actually slept until 9:00 which is kinda late for us while we're on the road but we can now officially say that we have "slept underneath that Amarillo sky" just like the country music song. We didn't have a whole lot planned for the day and it was a good thing because we ended up wasting about three and a half hours trying to get the computer fixed. After we got our showers and ate breakfast we decided to go on over to Palo Duro Canyon State Park and check it out first. It's in the book and so we wanted to see what it was all about. Once we ... read more

Matt & Scott’s South-Western Adventure This is the story of Scott and his son Matt who headed off to the wild southwest in search of cowboys and Indians. It was to be an adventure like no other, guns, ammo and cowboy hats galore. Through the searing heat of the Nevada desert, to the O.K. Corral, Little Big Horn and the bright lights of Los Vegas. Nothing could stop them, not even a 13 hour flight to LA. Auckland to LAX 11 June 2010 Off to a good start, managed to secure some extra leg room over the wing next the emergency exit so Matt shouldn’t get too claustrophobic! Speaking of legs, yes Kate I got your foot in the mail and I’ll see what I can do about the cowgirl boots for you. Once we had ... read more

The Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway is known as The Santa Fe Southern Railway and operates scenic train rides from its station in Santa Fe to Lamy and back. It has been in Santa Fe for about 130 years. The trip to the sleepy little town of Lamy takes an hour or so each way. Lamy is reminiscent of towns from the 19th century and is a small place located about eighteen miles southeast of Santa Fe. The train is powered by a diesel electric GP7 locomotive and, in addition to carrying passengers, also hauls freight. There is a cash bar on board which sells alcohol, snacks, and other beverages. The passenger car is reminiscent of bygone days and is not airconditioned, however one can raise up the windows and the cool breezes blowing in ... read more

This tramway is billed as the "world's longest tramway" and ascends 2.7 miles to the top of Sandia Peak at 10,378 feet. It's easy to get to this place from downtown Albuquerque. Parking is only $1 and an adult round trip ticket is $20. There's a restaurant at the bottom where one boards the tram and one at the top. At the top, one has an 11,000 square mile panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. There are two tram cars and each is designed to hold up to 55 passengers and the trip takes about 15 to 20 minutes each way. As the tram lifts passengers from the desert floor, it ascends over the Cibola National Forest above canyons and lush forest. It is possible to observe different types of flora and fauna during the ride. ... read more
