We were so blessed to find a Travelodge, complete with 2 queen beds (generally we get 2 doubles) for $42.99, taxes included!! The kids found the pool too cold, but it refreshing to Mom, who has been feeling too hot lately. We discovered the SONIC drive-in restaurant, with milkshakes and a burger for $2.99, which the kids had for supper; The Boldts stayed with the kids , while Mom and Dad went to a Mexican place called Taco Cabana - WOW! Our meals were huge, including a Mango margarita, complete with pleasant Mexican music, and cozy patio chairs. It’s a chain, and Mom highly recommends it!! (In case you are wondering, our bill was about $13!!) Ron has been fascinated with the altitude. Yesterday we climbed up to 7000 ft. above sea level, and passed ... read more

Well, we sadly left Durango and started once again on our journey south to Texas. It was a beautiful sunny day and we saw the temperatures climb from 15C in Durango at 9 am to 36C in Socorro at 6 pm! The drive was uneventful though we did see some astounding things. We had some extra time to stop today so when we saw the turn-off for Chaco Canyon, we just had to go there. It is a canyon that had a Puebloan culture (Chaco Culture) and there were about 6 or 7 different pueblos all within communicating distance of each other in the canyon. All that are left is ruins but it's so very interesting. We stopped at the Visitor Center and looked through the museum and then had a delicious lunch that Ricci packed ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Taos August 1st 2009

Il a ... read more

Félix... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Las Vegas July 31st 2009

Was fuer ein schoenes, gut erhaltenes, altes Dorf. Den ... read more

After we stayed Thursday night in Santa Rosa, we started after a nice breakfast in the nice motel and headed north. Already after a couple of miles we fell in love with New Mexico. The scenery... so much different than anything we know from Germany or South Carolina. A decision was make quickly that we want to spend more time here. OK, so exit the interstate I-25 (which we were heading north) and into the mountains. First stop in Las Vegas, NM. Get your picture of the "real" Las Vegas out of your head, the Las Vegas in NM is so much like a small town in Mexico, no tourists, but cute downtown area, a park, some small stores. We strolled around a little bit, and had a coffee in a small cafe, which is owned ... read more

Albuquerque to Amarillo - 33°c For one of the first mornings on the tour, some of us managed to have a lie in to catch up on some sleep. There was an optional helium balloon excursion that several of the group signed up for that departed the hotel at 5:30am in order to catch the sunrise over Albuquerque. For those of us not signed up for it, we didn’t have to meet at the coach until 9:15am, which made for a good extra hour and a half in bed, which on this tour, moving at the pace we are, is something somewhat sacred! After the night before where Scott and I were both still wide awake until around 3am thanks to the continuing bouts of laughter, the lie in was more than appreciated! Despite the very ... read more

Up early for the bus. We stopped in Durango. Here there was 3 options. White water rafting, ridee some Jeeps, or just have a look around town. We did the Water Rafting. I was pretty nervous, as was LV coz last time she did it she drowned and had to be revived. It was the tamer than a ferris wheel. I was actually pretty disappointed. I would not have called it white water rafting - it was floating down the river in an inflated boat. Look, it wasnt that bad... Just wasn't what i expected. It was lovely and relaxing. Not extreme like advertised. Had a bit of lunch then headed back to the bus. We watched the end of Forrest Gum which we missed the day before. Then watched National Lampoon's Vacation. Just quietly, that ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Roswell July 26th 2009

It's not a secret that I am the more adventurous one (meaning I don't care what people think of me when I do something "odd"). So for the last 3 months I have said we should go to ROSWELL, New Mexico for the ROSWELL INTERNATIONAL UFO FESTIVAL over the 4th of July weekend. This was met a very definitive "NO" every time I brought it up. I kept at it and finally she said yes (persistence pays off guys). Early Friday morning we left Albuquerque for the 2 1/2 hour drive to Roswell - just a day trip. We got there in pretty good time not really knowing what to expect. On the way we were greeted with one of those "only in New Mexico" sunrises where the colors just dance in the sky and hide ... read more
