We finally left the West Texas country and entered into The Land of Enchantment. The landscape as you can see in the photos changed from the creosote bush (AKA greasewood) to grassy rangeland. BTW, the creosote bush can live up to 900 years! Betcha didn’t know that. In fact, the plants can clone themselves and may be the oldest living organisms on Earth…things that make you say…hmmmm. We also left the heat in the lowlands as the grassy plains go up to 5,000 - 6,000 feet in elevation. The cooler temps were an unexpected and welcome treat. We rolled into and through Carlsbad. This region is a major pecan growing area. I was surprised by the number and size of the groves. I guess I associated pecans with the Southeastern part of the USA. We finally ... read more

So we had a free day and we decided to do something close to town (Albuquerque). From Albuquerque we took old Route 66 east for a couple miles until we hit HIGHWAY 14 that runs behind the Sandia mountains all the way up to Santa Fe. These days the road is pretty desolate, but in the old days this was the hot-bed for turquoise so it is the aptly names TURQUOISE TRAIL. It still is to a degree. First up we took a little detour up to the top of the Sandia Mountain. Up and up we went past the ski area until we got to the top. It was absolutely freezing up there and this was the middle of June. The clouds were starting to roll over the Sandia so it was a pretty spectacular ... read more

Today was a totally rocking day! We ate burritos at this restaurant in Santa Fe called the Bumble Bee's Baja Grill. Mom says "I had a "naked" burrito with asparagus and it was scrumptious!" My burrito had black beans, rice, pico de gallo, and cheese in it. I would give it 9.5 on my official Burrito Scale. I took off .5 because it was a little "too spicy!" It was, like all of the past burritos, perfect in every way imaginable! The restaurant looked really cool inside because there were all of these bumble bee pinatas hanging from the ceiling! We went to the Palace of the Governors museum. It is a "monumental adobe structure that housed the residence and offices of governors from its construction ca. 1609 until it became the state history museum in ... read more

Today was a really fun day! We drove from Oklahoma City to Tucumcari. We saw big wind turbine farms in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. On the way, we stopped in Amarillo, Texas to see Harry Potter 6. I absolutely loved it. Mom says "I liked it, but I liked the book more. It was fun to see it in Amarillo in the middle of a day of driving." We also passed by Cadillac Ranch, we didn't get much chance to see it because by the time I told mom, we were past it, so we kept on going. For dinner, we went to Del's, a restaurant that serves Mexican and American food on Route 66. I had a burrito, which I thought was really good. It had cheese on the top, and It was really ... read more

Today I turned 25. At the International UFO Museum and Research Center the ticket seller asked me if I was turning 16. And I got carded for trying to buy an alien lighter for Vincenzo. Apparently you have to be 18 to purchase one. The museum had a lot of newspaper clippings and things to read so Vincenzo had a blast. The accounts of the initial 1947 Roswell crash were my favorite part because they seemed the most unaffected. The best was when the guy who found the crash site and brought his findings to the army ended up with a brand new truck and kept his mouth shut. Then we drove through Albuquerque to Laguna Pueblo. It was not what we had expected- the historic pueblo was centered around a mission church and there were ... read more

We stopped for American breakfast in town and Vincenzo ate 1 out of 3 pancakes. The landscape is much different and the heat is starting to get drier. We stopped in Historic Fort Stockton to check out the fort- the largest statue of a roadrunner was just a bonus. Hunger took over and Israel asked some guy working on a house where a good restaurant was. The guy looked at him blankly so Israel said, "OK, where would YOU eat?" and he gave us directions to La Rosita, even though he told us the wrong name. He must eat there often. It was very pink and decorative and there was music that Israel deemed a propitious with regard to the food. Then we went to the fort and took advantage of the interactive display. The sun's rays come streaming down through empty sky, thunderclouds and aspen leaves - and strike an ant next to me scurrying about for its morning meal coffee black as night on my other side the sound of the ocean lapping with the wind in the trees Thunder rumble approaching tumbling nearer clouds swell, the ocean swells the sun's rays disappear A drop of rain strikes my nose like a river to the sea the rain unto me Hello out there in e-land!
