I was sitting in an Irish pub and the crowd was doing singalongs. A friendly chap asked me to stand up and sing and I hesitated. He said to me, "If you don't sing you'll never be one of us. You'll always be just a tourist." So I sang.
I travel to meet the locals and go to the places they hang out for dining, drinking, and fun. I go to be more than just a tourist. Who wants to be treated as "just a tourist?" It is a hell of a lot fun to be more than just that.

In the words of my hero, Anthony Bourdain: "Be a traveller, not a tourist."

Day 1 I’ve been very busy lately and finally had a bit of time to finish posting on our Andulusian adventure. We started our trip in Madrid and finished our trip in Madrid. We left the house in Las Pinedas on a Sunday morning and headed back to Córdoba. I think safe to say that we all napped some more on the two hour ride back to Madrid. The check in process at our hostal was pretty slow. The landlord was overwhelmed by the number of people that were checking out and in that morning. A hostal is a small private run hotel that previously might have someone’s large multi-room home. The place I had reserved rooms at was small but clean and very cheap. We paid an average of 22 euros for each room. One ... read more

We actually started out the day by first going into La Carlota. The troops wanted to do some shopping. This by the way is a foreign concept to Beth and me. Other than buying some souvenir gifts for the grandkids, we just don’t shop. That is an activity that is not on our priority list of things to do. Anyhooooo….Beth and I went for a good breakfast at the coffee shop that we had discovered on a previous stop. I read the newspaper, enjoyed some eggs, taters, and ham with a good cup of coffee. By the way, the Spanish are potato eating fools. I thought the Irish could scarf down the potatoes, but the Spanish could sure give them a run for their money in this department. Our friend Jill observed that she didn’t think ... read more

The Alhambra is a very large complex. One cannot amble about the place in one day. Furthermore, reservations are required for certain parts of the Alhambra because only small groups are allowed into those places at staggered times. If you miss your time slot you are out of luck. And further…furthermore, this is one of the top tourist places in Spain. Do you know what that means? There are hordes of tourists. I don’t do hordes. I can’t be part of a horde. It’s hard to amble when you are in a horde…know what I mean? Our landlord had recommended that we make reservations for the 11:30 time slot. Well, I figured out that we just get there in the morning and make a reservation for later in the afternoon. Nope. It was already sold out ... read more

Went to Málaga on this day to see the ocean because one the students hadn’t seen an ocean or been to the beach. It turned out to be yet another bluebird day. It was a perfect day to go to the beach; well not entirely because the waves were quite high and it wasn’t exactly swimming weather. The students did roll up their pant legs and go wading. They enjoyed themselves doing this. Málaga is a modern seaside tourist town. Since the mountains come down fairly close to the ocean, the town itself is strung out along the beach. To my eye it lacks the charm of say Portofino or Amalfi. This area is quite popular with the Brits and to my understanding it is virtually overrun by them during the high season. We once again ... read more

We decided that we would go to Córdoba later in the afternoon and stay until the evening and eat supper there. It was Jill´s 26th birthday and she wanted to have some kind of unique celebration. I suggested that we do a tapas crawl. For the uninitiated, tapas are small plates of appetizer snacks. A meal can be made by trying a variety of small dishes. There are also ½ raiciones, these are equal in quantity to about two tapas dishes. Then there are the full raiciones, these are regular plate size servings. More on the tapas crawl later. We also had decided to sleep in late and drive into the small neighboring town of La Carlota for a bit more grocery shopping and looking around. One of the students had come down with a sore ... read more

We all managed to get up early and fix ourselves a breakfast and pack a lunch – we had some serious sightseeing in mind. Sevilla is about an hour and a half from Las Pinedas and it is all freeway driving. On the way to Sevilla we took note of an interesting town by the name of Carmona built on an escarpment and that can be seen from the freeway. One of the students had a guidebook and read that there were quite a bit of interesting things to see there. So we decided to plan for that on a later day. I had anticipated that there would be problems with parking so the previous night I had researched an alternate strategy. The Sevilla airport lies just outside of the city and it too is just ... read more

My objective today was to visit Jaen and Zuheros or Baena. And we wanted to lay in some food supplies for the week. And we wanted to cook at the house that evening. Ummm yeah…that was too tall an order to fill. The day didn’t quite work out the way in which I had envisioned. First of all, for those of you that may or may not know, Beth & I are teaching at the same school. I am teaching Spanish. I believe that for someone acquiring a second language, classroom study is too much an abstract environment and some level of immersion is really needed to achieve some level of competency. Plus, I am an enthusiastic advocate of traveling and having what I call “the authentic experience.” I also tell my students to: “Live the ... read more

I understand that the weather has totally sucked (Boise, ID) for the last week and a half while we were in sunny Spain. Gee…that´s too bad! We had a totally groovy time in Spain, weather-wise, culinary-wise, and otherwise. Beth and I had been planning our return to Spain for quite some time so we decided to go there for our spring break this year. We spent one week in the Córdoba region and two days in Madrid. Our good pal Jill May accompanied us. When I invited her this past fall she didn’t hesitate and said that she didn’t need to think about it and that she was “in.” I like enthusiastic travelers like that! When one thinks of Spain, the pictures of flamenco dancing, bullfights, white villages, and Moorish architecture immediately come to mind. You ... read more

We flew into Madrid and arrived at 7AM. The next leg of the journey was to take the high speed AVE train to Córdoba and pick up our rental vehicle at the train station. Although one does not necessarily have to make reservations for the train, I thought it would be prudent to have assured seats since I was not familiar with the amount of travelers on a Sunday afternoon. Tip: Although RENFE (the Spanish train company) has an online reservation site and it also offers discounts for reservations online, that proved to be an impossible task to accomplish. Beth and I tried for two successive days and finally gave up. While I was doing additional research for ticket purchasingI did find a reference to a company’s website through which one can purchase discount tickets for ... read more

As in de la Renta and Powers…I kid you not! This New Year’s Eve was riotously fun and delicious. In the company of good friends (Dave, Stephanie, Jill, and Cindy) we went to the annual bash hosted by Le Coq Rouge. This is the #1 restaurant in Boise. It is a French country-style eatery that will knock your socks off. If you are coming to, or just passing through Boise, Idaho, you owe it to yourself to dine at this restaurant. The menu is limited with usually no more than 5 – 6 appetizers and 8 – 10 entrees. Depending on what is seasonally available, some items appear at various times and only a handful of them are regular items on the menu. I’ve had a variety of dishes and have never been displeased by what ... read more
