10/23/2009: Wandered down Highway 99 to Chico. Took us about an hour to make the 45 mile drive. Tough travel day! Got all settled at the Elk's Campground then just relaxed for the next two days. We really like it here. The largest county park in the USA is just across the street - lots of walking paths, lots of birds to watch, and an 18 hole public golf course. Two years ago we spent 10 days here but this year we had to keep moving. 10/25/2009: Drove south on Highway 99 to Chowchilla where we checked into The Lakes RV [View Full Entry]

Heading down Highway 97
After three cold and mostly rainy days in LaPine, we continued down Highway 97 into California, arriving in Red Bluff on Friday, October 16th. The temperature went from the low 30's in LaPine to the low 80's in Red Bluff. The last two weeks is all the winter we want... it's great to be back in the warm sun and to be back in shorts! On our third day in LaPine we finally saw some clear skies so we drove up to Newberry Crater National Monument for one afternoon of sightseeing. The park was closed which meant we didn't have to [View Full Entry]

Ready for another perfect summer day of golf.
Another Deer Park summer has come to an end. We had four wonderful months filled with truly special friends and almost daily golf. Though we're sad to leave all of that behind, it does feel good to be on the move again and we'll be seeing everyone at various times and places throughout the winter. Our first stop was Pendleton, Oregon, where we spent 10 days visiting with Shawn & Christina (Terry's daughter) and their three kids, Jacob, Bryson, and Sheviann, and with Todd (Terry's son) and his two kids, Krister and Kessa. Kessa - age 4 months - is the [View Full Entry]

Potholes
Potholes
Small potholes below O'Sullivan Dam.
Potholes... depressions in the ground filled with water. In this case I'm referring to the Potholes Lakes of central Washington. When O'Sullivan Dam was built, Potholes Reservoir was created behind the dam and many small potholes "lakes" were created when the water table rose. The dam is 3.5 miles long - the longest earthen dam in the United States. The reservoir is huge (23,000 surface acres)and is very popular for all water sports. Potholes State Park is on the edge of the reservoir and is a beautiful park with a boat launch area, day use, and very nice (big rig friendly) [View Full Entry]

The chain of missions established along the San Antonio River in the 18th century represent one of Spain's most successful attempts to expand its dominion northward from New Spain (present-day Mexico). Collectively they form the largest concentration of Catholic missions in North America. The first mission, mission San Antonio (later called "the Alamo"), was established in 1718. In 1720 a second mission, San Jose, was established roughly 3 miles south of the Alamo. In 1731, three more missions were established along the banks of the San Antonio River - Mission San Juan, Mission Concepcion, [View Full Entry]

We arrived in San Antonio on Sunday, February 1st, and were joined by our friends, Fred and Lani, that afternoon. We're staying at Travelers World RV Resort on the southern edge of the city, backed up to the municipal park and golf course with a great hike/bike path along the river. A very nice spot. We got settled into our sites in time for happy hour and some catching up since we hadn't seen them since September. Our first venture into the city was for the famous Riverwalk. What a great way to spend an afternoon and/or evening. We walked the [View Full Entry]

Some beach! North America » United States » Texas
This is what it's all about! Yesterday we took the jetty boat over to St. Jo Island for an afternoon of relaxing and shelling. The island is privately owned, unoccupied, undeveloped and offers miles of beach. We had a nice sunny day but the ocean breeze kept the air pretty cool. The boat runs hourly until noon, then every 2 hours until the last boat back to the mainland leaves at 6:00 pm. With lawn chairs, a bottle of wine, snacks, and a good book, the afternoon went by pretty fast! Earlier in the week we drove in to Corpus Christi [View Full Entry]

On January 3, 2009, we travelled north from Mission, about 200 miles, to Pioneer Beach Resort, Port Aransas, on Mustang Island near Corpus Christi. Mustang Island is just north of Padre Island and is about 18 miles long. The southern end of the island connects to north Padre Island and Corpus Christi by bridge and the northen end connects to Aransas Pass by a short, free ferry. We had intended to stay here for two weeks then move up the coast a few miles to Rockport to take advantage of our Western Horizon membership. But we were running errands in Rockport [View Full Entry]

Here I am getting a head start on my annual New Year's resolution to be healthier (and skinnier). The beaches of South Padre Island go on for over 30 miles.
Birds. Birds. Birds. Birds everywhere. It's easy to see why so many serious birders consider this area paradise. Our second day here a large flock of Green Parakeets landed in the tree next to our motorhome. So noisy in flight and absolutely silent when perched. And well camoflaged! There were several of us standing around with binoculars looking at the three or four birds we spotted but when they suddenly flew, atleast 30 or 40 birds suddenly took flight! And they're big - 13" long with a 21" wingspan - not the usual caged parakeet we can buy in pet stores. [View Full Entry]

I know.  I know.  I promised to keep a travel blog then promptly vanished into a technology void.  So sorry.  But from this point forward I will be connected to the rest of the world via wifi and will try to do a much better job.  So...this entry will be to try and get all caught up.  We finished up our stay at Patagonia Lake State Park on December 1st.  We thoroughly enjoyed our seven weeks in the park, volunteering for the Sonoita Creek State Natural Area, but it did feel good to be on the road again.  Our first day [View Full Entry]
