Headed for the Rock Creek visitors’ center to tour the exhibits and see the outside buildings. It was closed, so we wasted a morning waiting around for it to be open at the posted time. Looked over the ranch buildings from the top of the hill and at the ruts and swales. Fortunately we had a little brochure that showed the layout of the buildings. This station made famous by the penny novels of the day. Wild Bill Hickok was a hired stock tender at this pony express/wagon trails station and murdered the owner and two other men, but it was written such that he was a hero and killed 3 bandits—thus began his career as gunfighter extraordinaire. Drove on to Fairbury and looked at a city mural of a visiting circus passing down main street ... read more

The last day and it is raining. Got train and managed to get seats but all the marathon runners were going home so packed. into New York on time. Had time to look at the city again before the limo ride back to the airport. 7 hours later we were at Heathrow. Another bus ride back to our multi million pound terminal 5 and our latest adventure is over.... read more

It's 1:56 a.m. as I write this post. Why am I up so late, you might ask? Because you all mean that much to me! That's right folks, I have put making sure I keep in contact with YOU ahead of packing. Did I mention I leave in two days? But that's the fun about a trip like this. I have spent 12 years of my life planning, organizing, preparing, studying, swimming, and generally working my butt off. Now it's time for me to just BE. While I'm in New Zealand, I'll work 4 days, then have 3 days off to travel and experience New Zealand outside of Wellington (where I'll be staying). A shout out to Grandma Wise for the quote of the day: "Wherever you are, make sure you're there." I fully intend on ... read more

So this is the beginning of my blogging experience. My intention for starting this blog was to document my travels/adventures for my upcoming season in Antarctica. In order to give a full spectrum of the experience and to learn more about blogging, I have decided to start with a quick illustration of preparations and training leading up to deployment in October. Currently I am sitting in Lincoln NE. enjoying all the culture this fine place has to offer, and surprisingly, even to myself I am not being sarcastic. The town is actually quite nice maybe a little isolated form all things that I have grown accustom to growing up in california but the downtown area is quaint, and the surrounding landscape is not flat, however it is covered with corn and soybeans. This weekend I ... read more

Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhh...........my bottom was hurting this morning when I woke up !! I'm thinking there just wasn't enough cushion on that saddle yesterday. Thank goodness the pain got a little better as the day went on. We were in Scottsbluff, Nebraska at the local Wal-Mart when we got up but we wouldn't be there long. It was an early morning for us and we were up and at it at the crack of dawn. Not only was I hurting from the horseback ride yesterday but I was also still feeling a little anxious about the rattlesnake incident. I just couldn't get that rattling sound out of my head or the vision of the rattler itself rattling. Hopefully, in time, I will be able to put it all out of my mind and forget about it. This morning the wind has calmed which was good since we had to take down the camper without it turning into a sail. We headed out about 8 am. Had planned on stopping for breakfast right off but the town of Pine Bluff didn't have anything. We stretched the gas before our first stop until the reserve light came on. NEVER WANT TO DO THAT AGAIN especially in the middle of Nebraska! We finally found a McD and a gas station in Sidney, NE. They even had a Wal-mart. The best part was they are the headquarters for Cabela the sport outfitters. Had to check that out. They had this huge display with stuffed animals like none I've ever seen even in a museum. They also had huge fresh water fish tanks with the kind of ... read more

Howdy all from Valentine, Ne.! We made it here and it's wasn't too eventful yet.... We had to make a gas stop in Broken Bow, Ne and Shayla (My Adorable 8yr) got out of the jeep and proceeded to say out loud, "Mom, What's that smell"?...... Well, My reply was "That's the smell of money to the peeps around here". Gotta love the smell of farm town, Ne.! I REALLY think I need to get her out of the city more often. LOL My poor butterfly antenna topper didn't fare so well.........it's wingless. I guess I will have to figure something out. We found our Hotel very easily. I was never so glad that it wasn't "The Angelic Ranch" of Yellowstone/Vacation 2008! AHHH...Air Conditioning, Internet, and Indoor plumbing, what a concept! We had a fabulous lunch ... read more

Anna--THANK YOU! Your flags were awesome, and we wholeheartedly appreciated the "Happy Honeymoon" and "Best Wishes" on our drive down the lane. Love. Well, Iowa is beautiful. It may have a lot of corn and I might have been passed by several hog trucks on the highway, but it is still insanely beautiful. It is the "greenest of greens" as Zack would say. --JD Kicked the day off with a "Momma's Pancake Breakfast" from Cracker Barrel, with my momma and Jenn's momma-in-law. Stopped by dad's work and said goodbye to him, and then hit the interstate 80 way. First song of the trip was "I Will Possess Your Heart" by Death Cab for Cutie. Listen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVNAljC2kKM Quickly followed by the entirety of Weezer Blue...great start all around. Side note--don't go on the "Nature Trails" in ... read more
