We didn’t have a long drive today (not like yesterday) and we were heading towards Perry, Iowa. This is where Theo’s father’s family is from. Theo had visited this place when he was 18 with his grandfather, brother, mom and dad. They stayed with extended family and met a lot of relatives. He tried to find the house he stayed in but we were unsuccessful. We did find the community center they played basketball at. After a quick tour we left and headed west towards Lincoln, NE. I must tell you that Theo had eaten at a place called Maid Rite. It is the home of loose meat (think sloppy joes minus the sloppy part) sandwiches. We found one on our way to Perry. I thought these little burgers were AWESOME!! Theo thought they were a ... read more

Parting is such sweet sorrow when you are bidding farewell to a new, albeit temporary, member of the family! We returned our RV on time and in one piece, and when we had finally pulled everything out of it, we stood bewildered for a few moments at how we had managed to bring the mountain of stuff packed beside our minivan out here in the first place. But Todd is a man of many talents, including squeezing every available inch of space out of a vehicle. We managed to get just about everything back in the van, and only had to drop off one box at UPS to be shipped back. Worth every cent, as it meant the difference between the kids have a small carved out space for their legs vs. sitting criss-crossed for four ... read more

I decided on a lazy morning this morning. It is no fun driving due east early in the morning, the sun makes it very bright straight on. So, I waited until the sun is over the yardarm (windshield) and took off from Saratoga WY at 9:00 am. High anxiety day for me, climbing up the Snowy Range Pass, and then coming down the other side – altogether about 30 miles. As soon as I turned onto the road, though, I knew it was going to be ok. SR 130 was a nice freshly paved one lane each way with guard rails where needed. The first few miles were flat, nothing to it. Then we climbed. Along the road until I entered the National Forrest I saw beautiful ranches. They must have had a contest as to ... read more

7/22/13 - Left Wal-Mart parking lot enroute to LeMars, Iowa - the Ice Cream Capital of the World. Nice little town, they let us park the motorhomes on a side street while we went to Blue Bunny for ice cream. Everyone filled up on ice cream, then we continued to Cherokee, Iowa to a City RV Park. Really a nice park, by the river/lake, full hookup, only $15.00 per night. Briar and DDakota went fishing then Briar discovered some really bad mud under the railroad trestle and they played in the mud. The pics are on my phone, wish I could post them here. Jacked cooked fish, green beans, and mashed potatoes for supper.... read more

7/21/13 - Had the motorhome washed on the way out of Laramie. Headed to Kearney, NE for an overnight in Wal-Mart. Aleta cooked cheeseburger patties, fries, broccoli, & yeast rolls. All watched the movie "Billy Jack" at our motorhome. Turned in for the night.... read more

Today was pretty easy and tonight we are staying at a nice Residence Inn on the south side of Lincoln, NE. Although I had a Trip Tik by AAA printed before the trip, our Garmin suggested a different route today that was 50 miles shorter than the AAA route. We decided to go for it, and it worked out well. We spent a lot of the day on US 36 which did not have a lot of traffic, but was still 65 mph most of the way. This made it for a pleasant day of driving.... read more

So, last post (December 2), I interrupted our Big Ball of String roadtrip to go see ZooLights Calgary! But, the post before that (November 28), I was trying to get to Chimney Rock, Nebraska... Chimney Rock was a landmark along the Oregon Trail (also The Mormon Trail and the California Trail.) Back in the Pioneer days, they say the Spire could be seen for approximately 40 miles. Since the people had been travelling who-knows-how long, over flat, flat ground, it was probably a huge relief to see Chimney Rock! At least, they'd know that they weren't going in circles!! (Or, I suppose, they'd know they WERE going in circles, if they passed it more than once...) url=http://biggestballofstring.files.wordpr... read more

Are you sick of me talking about the heat? The day we arrived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the thermometer in our car registered 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius)! - of course, that was in a parking lot, after the car had sat for a bit (the store, Camping World, let us bring the puppies into the store with us), but that's HOT!!! We were tired. We were sick of the heat. We were on our way home and wishing we were already there. (Now, as I write this, it's winter, and it's cold & snowing, and I can't remember what I was complaining about in the summer...no...I remember ... I love summer, but I'm like Goldilocks - "too hot, too cold, just right".) Last time we were in Nebraska, we were on a one way ... read more

"An inauspicious beginning!" That's what football's Dan Dierdorf yells Martin Grammatica booted the opening kick-off out of bounds. Today I ate a Piezano's personal pizza and afterwards spent more time in the bathroom than was absolutely necessary. The thing is, I was on the clock -- I had to get to the Omaha airport so I could catch a plane to Fargo. There my dad (of the Tour de Dad) would be waiting. I would have deplaned at 12:40 AM, September 17, but I didn't because I missed my flight. So, "An inauspicious beginning!" I will try again tomorrow. I know that Montana is full of deadly predators: cougars, grizzly bears, and tractor trailers. I have faith that the Tour De Dad will be an epic journey and that the two lycra-girt protagonists will overcome all ... read more

Nine hours after leaving Minneapolis, we drove underneath the inspiring Great Platte River Archway Monument at Kearney, Nebraska, where we stayed our first night. A few years ago we stayed in Kearney to watch the Sandhill crane migration during March. An amazing experience. We thundered across the prairie, listening to a library MP3 download of the tragic narrative of the rise and fall of the Comanches---from pre-Spanish encroachment to the final denouement with settlers in the Texas Territory: Empire of the Summer Moon by S. C. Gwynne. Lunch at an Iowa reststop was a cold Italian frittata in a whole wheat wrap with lettuce and avocados. The frittata gently cooked while we ate breakfast before our trip began this morning.... read more
