BRILLIANT BRILLIANT DAY There is so much I could write about today, but it's late and we are in bed, with much more warm and fuzzy things to do than write a blog or play fizz buzz lol! So, the highlights are: Fantastic complicated back road route from Biloxi, through DeSoto National Forest, to Vicksburg, Mississippi Cool forest temperatures, invigorating scents Countryside landscapes all the way Farms, horses, cattle, crops, tractors, rancher homes, hay bails in the fields, churches Downed powerline across the road meant a further detour off route 29N. Brilliant Felt like I was back home in Aby, Lincolnshire. Even rode under the "Aby railway bridge". Where are the border collies? Thought about my sister, Joe, a lot And more so when we passed "Hicks Road" once back on route 29. I miss you ... read more

Uneventful drive across Alabama and Mississippi. Planned on overnight at Flying J in Olive Branch, but bobtail trucks have invaded all of the RV parking. No longer an RV friendly Flying J stop. We ended up about 10 miles away at Wal Mart in Southaven, Ms.... read more

Taking the Blues Highway (Highway 61), I was able to get more of a feel of the sights and feelings of this vast country. It got its name from the history of blues in the Mississippi area. So of course when I saw the signs for the Blues Museum in Clarksdale, I just had to take a detour to have a look. Filled with a jumble of artefacts, some classy velvet/questionably colour choice suits, and the odd placed mannequins, it was an interesting leg stretching moment. They did have an entire room dedicated to Muddy Waters detailing his life and influences over lots of other artists. It even included his original house in which he grew up and lived. This consisted of little more that a wooden room, from which great music was made. I had ... read more

When we left Nelda's we drove over to Keesler AFB, MS (in Biloxi) to see our grandson Tyler. He had graduated from Air Force boot camp in March and we were not able to be there, but we wanted to spend some time with him. He is going through Radio Frequency School and will be in MS until October. He still does not know where he will be going for his first permanent duty station. He signed up for six years, and we pray that he will make a career of it. He said that if he decides to stay, he wants to have his Bachelor's degree by the end of his 6 years and then get his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. We called him after getting checked into base housing and he said he ... read more

4.5 hours changing speed from 65 to 45 to 35 then back to 55, maybe 100 times. Highway 84 grew monotonous very quickly , through a number of small South Georgia towns. A lot of standing water after weeks of unusually heavy rain. Kate asked the question often " think there are gators in there?" The Cooper is a pleasure to drive and remarkably comfy. Lots of looks from peeps of all ages. One of my favourite small towns ,Thomasville , by 1830. Met up with John Rainey and Joey Vitello, who is coaching for TUniversity , for dinner at Jonas. Sat outside and feasted on crab cakes and just for Kathie Z , shrimps and grits. John took us to the homestead, where we spent the night. 2 young softball players from the University stopped ... read more

Today started at the USS Alabama in Mobile, AL. I've been here before, but it's been close to ten years. Not much has changed with the ships, but they have opened an aircraft hanger and filled it with quite a few planes. I spent most of my morning here wandering around and exploring the ships. After I left Mobile I took a nice long drive North along the Eastern edge of Mississippi. It was a nice slow drive, no interstates, no traffic. Just a nice drive in 80 degree weather. I tell ya, If you want real Memphis BBQ, you need to go to Mississippi. The Memphis BBQ Company is about ten miles outside of Memphis, but it's the real deal. They have won over 10 world championsh... read more

We went exploring at url=http://mississippistateparks.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=MS&parkId=154848Roosevelt State Park today. The sunny day and blue skies were perfect for testing out my new camera. The park is located about 10 miles from our home and we have passed by many times without stopping to visit. It is about a mile north of I-20 just about 45 minutes' drive east of Jackson Mississippi. For a $3 day-pass entry fee, we visited the lake area, picnic locations (which were abundant) and saw the CCC cabins that are part of the National Historic Register. The entry station was not manned, but there was a sign asking for the $3 to be placed in the honor box located nearby. The hotel on-site is a bonus at $62/night for weekdays and $74 /night for weekends. Every room faces the lake and has an ... read more

Memphis – Tennessee We’re going to Graceland, Graceland…….. Memphis, Tennessee (said Paul Simon). Actually, that’s not why we’re coming here at all. We wanted to see the Delta and the LP gave Memphis an interesting write up. And we largely have to thank Rick Stein for one of his obscure travelogue/food programmes which M saw purely by accident back home and decided we had to fit the area into our travel plans and definitely a stay at the Shack Up Inn near Clarksdale. It’s a very early start as we have to get 2 buses to the Greyhound station for our bus to Memphis which leaves at 9am and surprisingly isn’t very full. It’s a Jefferson bus (a partner of Greyhound), but the facilities aren’t as good – no Wi-Fi or chargers on board for such ... read more

We have decided to leave Biloxi on 1/1/14, weather permitting. We will have one overnight in the panhandle of Florida and expect arrival to our destination in Fort Myers sometime onThursday afternoon/evening. We are both looking forward to the warmer weather. On Friday, the 20th, we decided to take a ride on 90 west to Bay St. Louis, MS. We went into ‘Old Town’ and checked out all of the antique/consignment shops. In one shop, the owner told us of an auction scheduled for that evening in a neighboring town to us (Gulfport). Then it was time for us to head back to the RV park for our Christmas lunch/dinner. Our Christmas lunch/dinner at the RV park was nice, but relatively short. Dinner consisted of ham, cornbread stuffing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, cranberries and ... read more
