We have decided to leave Biloxi on 1/1/14, weather permitting. We will have one overnight in the panhandle of Florida and expect arrival to our destination in Fort Myers sometime onThursday afternoon/evening. We are both looking forward to the warmer weather.
On Friday, the 20
th, we decided to take a ride on 90 west to Bay St. Louis, MS. We went into ‘Old Town’ and checked out all of the antique/consignment shops. In one shop, the owner told us of an auction scheduled for that evening in a neighboring town to us (Gulfport). Then it was time for us to head back to the RV park for our Christmas lunch/dinner.
Our Christmas lunch/dinner at the RV park was nice, but relatively short. Dinner consisted of ham, cornbread stuffing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, cranberries and beef gravy (couldn’t figure that out as there was no beef), a roll and a variety of desserts. It was all very good. Also, the company was very good and this is the part I wish had lasted longer. We sat at a table with 3 other couples who were very friendly. We chatted all through dinner, but probably not much longer than
Doorway Bay St Louis, MS
I loved the sign above the door! an hour or so. What oh what shall we do – oh yeah….the preview for the auction starts late afternoon, let’s go check it out! We arrived, saw a few things we might be interested in and decided to stick around. To our surprise, the auctioneer (and a few of the regulars) decided to thank their customers by providing a hot and cold assortment of foods and desserts! It was all very good, we didn’t stay ‘till the end, as the items Jim might have purchased went for more than he was willing to spend on them.
On Sunday, we decided to go to a restaurant, in the neighboring town of Ocean Springs, which has been made famous by the Food Network on TV. The TV show, “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” has done a ‘spot’ on them and they even have a TV show called ‘The Shed’. The actual name of the restaurant is ‘The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint’. Our first night in Biloxi, Jim had asked our waiters (at a different restaurant) for their recommendation on a good BBQ place. The Shed was their recommendation. We ordered a sampler plate for the 2 of us to split.
It arrived with 7 different meats (shredded beef brisket, shredded pork, BBQ ribs, BBQ short ribs, BBQ chicken, BBQ wings and BBQ sausage) and 3 sides – we selected cole slaw, potato salad and baked beans. The food was excellent and there was more than enough (we took some home).
On Tuesday, we decided to check out some of the casinos that we hadn’t been to as yet. I have included some pics. I also walked the beach. Jim waited in the car, as his knee is still bothering him. I love this beach – it just goes for miles and miles and miles (and miles and miles and miles). You can pull up in your car, park and step onto the pure white sandy beach. There are benches placed near the roadside, where you can sit. And if you happen to be staying in a hotel across the street, many have walk-over bridges to cross over. And in some areas you can just walk across the highway.
Wednesday, Christmas day, we decided to have Christmas dinner out. We didn’t see restaurants in town advertising Christmas dinner, probably because every casino in town was advertising it. We selected
Old Town Bay St Louis
A line of antique & consignment shops.
We went into every one! one that advertised Prime Rib & NY Strip Steak in addition to ham and seafood. Jim really doesn’t care for ham and I am not a big seafood person.
Sunday, we headed, for the last time, to the outdoor flea market in a neighboring town. The morning weather was cool and we had a few days of rain in a row, including Saturday night. There were not many vendors there, so we headed over to New Orleans. At that point, we were only 60 miles away. I came to think that we weren’t going to go because of Jim’s knee, but he agreed that we were so close that it was silly not to go. We went to a flea market (mostly new stuff) and asked a vendor for recommendations for lunch. He suggested a small restaurant ‘Coops Place’ that mostly ‘locals’ go to for lunch. We took his suggestion and went. I originally wanted the ‘blackened chicken’, but then ordered the ‘Cajun fried chicken’. The chicken was good, but I should have stuck with my original choice – I think it would have been spicier. Jim ordered a Cajun sampler plate which included Rabbit Jambalaya, which he enjoyed.
Heading back into Mississippi - ‘when what to my wondering eyes should appear, but the Silver Slipper casino was near’. Our car (almost) never drives by an unfamiliar casino, so of course we stopped. Jim played a little while, but it seemed that there would be no major winning streak today. Back into the car, but before going ‘home’ I wanted to get pictures of some carvings that are in the center island of Rte 90 near the casino area of Biloxi. I do not know who did the carvings, but they are done from the once live, now dead Oak tree trunks. They are magnificent.
Summing up Biloxi, Mississippi. I certainly recommend this area for vacation. I would suggest, however, not to come in the ‘off season’ in December, especially if you like the beach. The weather is too cold and unreliable. I absolutely love the beach here and can imagine that during the warm season it is very busy. We are told that summers are very hot and humid and everyone stays inside. March looks good to me at 80’s high/60’s low. Don’t know how crowded it may or may not be at that time, however.
Next stop - Florida!
We wish you all of you a very Happy New Year!
Linda & Jim
