Edit Blog Post
a pretty sunrise
this was actually on our drive to Biloxi that I forgot to include in my last 'blog' I forgot to mention on the last ‘travelblog’ that when we arrived, the site (we thought we had) had been given to someone else. Originally, we were told we would need to be out by Jan. 1 in the am, which was ok with us, but now, because there is no one scheduled for our current (new) site – we can stay up to Jan. 6, if we so desire. We still may leave Jan. 1, we’ll see…..at least we have the option.
This week we have continued ‘checking out’ some of the local casinos. Jim won a few $$ the other day, not a lot, but still a win! The weather has been crazy up & down in the temps….(can be in the 30’s at night or into 70’s during the day – but usually between 40’s-60’s))….but everyone here saying “just Dec.”. Friday, we drove to Pascagoula – on the way we stopped at a couple of indoor Flea Markets (didn’t buy anything except a 25 cent mug for Jims toothbrush). On the bridge on the way (there are bridges everywhere here, if not crossing the Gulf, we are crossing rivers and bayous and other wetlands – there are
high bridges, low bridges, walking bridges, driving bridges, railroad bridges and draw bridges), we saw (what I thought were ships) – Jim thought they were oil rigs. Turns out it was both! (see pic from said bridge). We drove around Pascagoula, we ended up at a ‘restricted’ government gate where a ship for NOAA was docked. A store owner recommended a good place for lunch and we stopped and had a delicious 16 oz bowl of chili and a great salad bar.
Saturday, we drove to a few yard sales. Jim bought a few things. At one of them he heard (& felt) his knee snap. It was time to be heading back for our free, Saturday lunch at the RV park anyway. We got back to the RV, Jim wrapped his knee, grabbed his cane (which he keeps in the RV) and off to lunch we went. It was pizza & salad day. No lunch next Saturday, instead on Friday will be Christmas dinner (lunch) on the front lawn at the office. I had wondered how they were going to do ‘Christmas dinner’ for everyone, since the park building is very small. There is not enough room for
everyone to sit at the Saturday lunches and many people just take their lunch back to their RV. There is a very large front yard, however. So, no problem. When we were deciding on which RV park to go for Dec., one of (my) decisions was based on the fact that they had ‘Christmas dinner’ - I thought, oh good, we will be with people that, at least, we have things in common. Well, now I discover that ‘Christmas dinner’ is actually at noon on Friday the 20
th! So, that leaves us, alone (which I didn’t want) and trying to figure out what to do on Christmas day (except for church, of course). We’ll have to figure that out sometime this week. After lunch on Saturday, we drove, just a mile or so, down the road to rent a few movies from Redbox. We ended up with 3. ‘Pacific Rim’, Star Trek into Darkness” & “Man of Steel”. We figured we can’t do too much until Jim’s knee heals. Note: I didn’t watch ‘Pacific Rim’ (not interested) – Jim said it was ok. We both were disappointed in ‘Star Trek’ – but we both enjoyed ‘Man of Steel’. On our
way out to return the videos today, I fell backward (in our kitchen), falling really hard (on my right ‘cheek’) and smacking the back of my head into the kitchen cabinet! My back is really starting to feel it now – so, besides the broken toe, bursitis and Carpal Tunnel that we left with, we now also have a twisted knee and sore back & butt. Old people & babies/toddlers have a lot in common. One thing they do NOT have in common, babies/toddlers tend to ‘bounce’ when they fall – old people just go ‘splat’.
Sunday & Monday, we pretty much stuck around, trying to heal a bit. Tuesday we headed to Bay St. Louis to check out the ‘Hollywood Casino’ (and neighboring RV park). Took pics along the way of the houses across from the Gulf. Wednesday we headed over to the Veterans center, which is only a couple of blocks away from our location. What a HUGE place. I saw bldg. #30 and I don’t know if there may have been even more than that. We went so that Jim could finally get his Veterans I.D. card.
Got there to find out that the Government
shut the system down a few months ago, so they could update the system to make new ‘swipe’ cards. The system was supposed to be back online in Nov., but it’s not and no one knows when the system will be up and ready. We will try again when we get to Florida.
Speaking of Florida......I am constantly amazed at how much beach is here (in MS) - miles and miles and miles of it....and you can just pull over to the side of the road (they have parking spots right on the road) - step out of your car and onto the beautiful beach! Can't do that in Florida....can't even see the beach in Florida (it is so built up)- if you can see it - it is either private land or a hotel or a restaurant or even if you do find a 'public' beach - you have to pay to park somewhere (even if entry to the beach is free). Beautiful beaches and free access here!
Merry Christmas everyone,
Linda & Jim
