I forgot to mention on the last ‘travelblog’ that when we arrived, the site (we thought we had) had been given to someone else. Originally, we were told we would need to be out by Jan. 1 in the am, which was ok with us, but now, because there is no one scheduled for our current (new) site – we can stay up to Jan. 6, if we so desire. We still may leave Jan. 1, we’ll see…..at least we have the option. This week we have continued ‘checking out’ some of the local casinos. Jim won a few $$ the other day, not a lot, but still a win! The weather has been crazy up & down in the temps….(can be in the 30’s at night or into 70’s during the day – but usually ... read more

Ahhhhh……..it is 9:30 am (CST) on Sunday, the bed is made, the dishes are done, I am dressed and finishing my last few sips of my second cup of coffee. Jim is gone for a few hours to a local gun show and possibly a few other stops, which gives me some quiet time to compose my thoughts and let you know that we did, indeed make it to Biloxi, MS. We spent our first night, on the road, in Martinsburg, W.VA. in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Don’t know how cold in actually got that night – but I was sure glad that we had put a 2nd blanket (a wool) one on the bed. Also, I knew there was a good reason that I packed my flannel pj’s! I certainly needed them both that night! ... read more

The Gulf Coast of Mississippi From New Orleans we followed on our guideline Route 10 east over the edge of Lake Ponchartrain. We did not cross the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway that crosses the large lake that broke through the levees and flooded the bowl of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. The causeway crosses its center headed northwards for nearly 24 miles (36.8 km) and is the world’s longest bridge over continuous water. We crossed over the easterly bridge, called the ‘Twin Spans’ bridge that had been severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina and its easterly span had only reopened in July 2009. This bridge is 5.4 miles long (about 8.7km) and is very impressive (and our first experience of these long southern bridges that I have already written about). We drove very slow and admired the view ... read more

Geo: 32.2987, -90.1805This was an uneventful day. Pretty much a travel day. We left Ft Worth this morning at 8:15 and 55 degrees and headed east. The plan was to go into Dallas and take a look around the city. For two reason, this didn't happen. For one, we were in rush hour traffic, and this would have made a sight-seeing tour of the city impractical. In addition, we simply passed the city before we realized it. We saw it from a distance, on I-20. This will be the second time we pass it on the outer edge and don't go in. Next time, it is a must. The east side of Texas is very different from the west side. The deserts and the prairies are replaced by lush green fields with lots of pine and hardwood ... read more

We had the best of intentions, really, we did! This was the day of our 5K run at the local Wing Dang Doodle Festival in Forest, Mississippi. After several mis-steps getting out the door, we were late to the start and actually were BEHIND the police cars for the first 3/4 mile. Then, they waited for us and we moved on through the route knowing that we were dead last in the race. We persevered and eventually passed a participant with an injured ankle. So, we didn't finish last, but the lesson for the day was to get to the start line on time next year!... read more

The drive on the Natchez Trace Parkway from Le Fleur's Bluff State Park Campground in Jackson MS to the Campground at Barnes Crossing in Tupelo MS was relaxing and uneventful. The partly sunny skies erupted in 2-3 brief but heavy showers. After setting up the Pilgrim in upper 80’s heat on Wednesday, August 21, 2013, I went to town in the air conditioned truck for a familiarization tour. Normally, I enjoy the cooling breeze generated with the windows down; however, even I had to succumb to the combination of heat AND humidity – perspiration doesn’t dry in the east like it does in the west! After a visit to downtown Tupelo, there is no doubt that Tupelo is linked to Elvis in some fashion. Guitar-shaped sculptures (okay, I might be stretching the definition of a sculpture ... read more

For those unfamiliar with National Park Service parkways, they are (for all practical purposes) two-lane controlled access highways although there is an occasional side road intersection and the “access ramps” terminate at the parkway in a “T” intersection instead of the traditional “merging traffic” feature. The parkways prohibit commercial trucks, are absent of billboards and roadside businesses and have a speed limit of about 50 mph. In addition to the Natchez Trace Parkway, I know of only two other National Park Service parkways. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a 469-mile scenic connection between Shenandoah National Park VA and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park NC, and the Colonial Parkway is a twenty-three mile scenic roadway between Yorktown VA and Jamestown VA. All three parkways are All-American Roads, and all three have a Mile Post system incorporated ... read more

The drive on I-20 from Vicksburg MS to LeFleur's Bluff State Park Campground in Jackson MS on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 was about fifty miles and took about an hour. LeFleur's Bluff State Park is set amid the hustle and bustle of the City of Jackson and is somewhat of an island in the storm. The campground is situated about a mile from the entrance and borders a quiet lake with many lakeside campsites. The facility was mostly vacant and found me chatting with only two other campers during my week-long stay. Thursday found me heading for downtown Jackson to visit the Old (State) Capitol Museum. As with most downtown attractions in most cities, parking is a challenge – at least until the visitor learns the lay of the land. I found, however, a vacant, no-charge ... read more

The drive from Natchez MS to Vicksburg MS on US 61 is designated as a scenic route for the entire 72 miles. With the exception of a short segment passing through Port Gibson MS, the entire route also is a four-lane divided highway with very few side road intersections. The drive on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 took a little over an hour, was very relaxing and held no surprises. I arrived at Plantation RV Park a couple of miles before reaching Vicksburg. The park is quiet, clean, and the sites are level but without shade and quite cramped. The owner (I suppose) told me I could park my truck in the adjacent RV space – even though that was a violation of the printed park rules. It seemed he had assigned every other RV space to ... read more

August 10th, 2013 9:00 pm CDT Day 32 We left our motel in Natchez, MS @ 6:45 am looking forward to a day driving on the Natchez Trace. The speed limit on the Trace is 50 mph. Since it was a Saturday and we had an early start it was a long time before one car came from behind. We stopped for lunch at French Camp, another place recommended by Roy Stone. It was a great place and the food was very good. French Camp Academy is for kids grades 1-12 who come from difficult circumstances to have a stable, loving home and school in a Christian environment. Just as we'd come to French Camp, a few raindrops were falling. By the time we had ordered and were eating, the rain was pouring down. We had ... read more
