Drove about 60 miles S E to Red River Gorge. It started raining on us, but we were able to jump out several times at scenic overlooks. This is a place we would love to visit in the spring or earlier in the fall at some time. You enter the gorge through Nada tunnel, which was built for trains to haul coal form the gorge many years ago.... read more

11-01-12 Today we visit Kentucky Horse Park which is conveniently located next to the campground. We visited The International Museum of the Horse, Hall of Champions, where they brought retired race champions out for us to see and here there stories, Horses of the World, which highlights selected breeds with costumed handlers putting the horses through their paces. There was an amateur jumping competition going on at the Alltech Arena, which was interesting if you have never been to one like Barbara and I.... read more

Sandy has arrived. Cold 41, rainy, and windy. Were supposed to leave today, but decided not to fight the high winds. Instead, we went to watch them make cheese at Heini's Cheese Chalet and Factory. They were making lacey baby swiss, cheddar, & yogart cheese. We timed our visit perfectly to catch all steps in the process. Afterwards, we tasted all of the different flavors of cheese and some sausage. No need for lunch today. Headed to Walnut Creek to watch the candy making at Coblentz Chocolate Factory. No samples here, so we had to buy our own. By the way, we bought some cheese at Heini's also. Been driving by Boyd and Wurthmann Restaurant for several days. Found out it was where the locals go, and after having pork chops and sausage with sides plus ... read more

10-28-12 This morning we head to New Philadelphia for church. They had a guest speaker from Albania, Taulant Kreci. The service was a bit different since Taulant spoke Albanian, and Jeff interpreted. After lunch at Bob Evans, we head to Dover to see the Warther Museum. Our guide at the museum was Jim Nixon, a retired History/Government teacher form Dover H. S., who said he thought he remembered the name Greg Adkins, and the Burris family. He was very knowledgeable about the museum and an interesting speaker. Ernest "Mooney" Warther supported his family making knives not only for carving but also kitchen knives. He was a steam engine enthusiast, and decided he would tell the history of the steam engine through wood carvings.... read more

10-27-12 Visited the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center to view "Behalt" a 10' x 265' historical cyclorama, painted by Heinz Gaugel, depicting the Anabaptist journey beginning in the early 1500's. We toured a pre civil war one room school that is still very similar to the ones of today. They built a replica of an early pioneer barn to house a restored conestoga wagon that would have brought early settlers to the region. There also are some buggys of the type that are still used today. Ate sub sandwiches at Troyer's Market; best sub EVER!!!... read more

10-24-12 Today we go to Orville to visit the Smuckers Store. Could not believe that they do not have tours of the Smucker facilities. Guess they just want you to buy stuff from their store and move on down the road,,,so we did to P.Graham Dunn Arts and Crafts Store, and Lehman's Hardware. Had dinner at Amish Door Restaurant. The meat was broasted chicken, which looked and tasted a lot like fried chicken. 10-25-12 Headed to Berlin to Sol's Arts and Crafts Store. Worked up an appetite so we headed to Miller's Bakery where we had donuts and coffee/coke. Bought a blueberrry pie for dessert for the next few nights. Tonights meal, fire roasted hot dogs w/slaw, chips, and pie ala mode. 10-26-12 Visited Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market, and visited Ohio's largest Christmas shop. Had ... read more

Left Pa. for Ohio this morning. Will be staying at Amish Country Campsites in Winesburg. Tonight, on the advice of "Johnny Be Good" Still, we had pizza at the Winesburg Country Store. You were right John, one of the best pizzas we have ever had. They also had soft-serve dipped ice cream. You will notice I am several days behind with the blog. For some reason my computer would not connect to the wi-fi at the campground. After consulting with all of my IT people I gave up.... read more
