A month in Europe! Thanks for reading along with my travels. I will try to publish as much as I can, as often as I can. Leaving Indy on April 14 for Rome, departing Indy at 7am Tuesday and (via Boston) getting into Rome at 7am Wednesday. Isn't that special? I don't really have a set schedule while I'm there, so this will be exciting, just me and a backpack. I'm thinking Italy, Austria, Germany, France. Any others will be extra special!... read more

My list of African countries I came up with in 2 hours time: Uganda Kenya Rwanda South Africa Ghana Nigeria Sudan Congo (formerly Zaire) Tanzania Tunisia Angola Botswana Swaziland Morocco Madagascar Mozambique Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) Ethiopia Djibouti Egypt Somalia United Arab Emirates Burundi Eritrea Malawi Zambia Namibia Equatorial Guinea Sierra Leone Libya Mali Liberia And I had the Canary Islands on there, but I wasn’t sure if it was officially part of Africa. They’re not. But they are just off the coast of Africa. I got to sleep in quite a bit today- Sarah woke me up just in time for lunch. While we were eating, Amanda asked the kids at our table to say the phrase “bad bird.” It was funny because the kids respond “bad bad.” Only Julius Mugambwa could said it, and even ... read more

First, the funny thing from yesterday that I couldn’t remember to put in here. Before show, Cowboy comes on the radio asking for Sarah. “Sarah, are you on radio? Not the big Sarah, the other one.” Kyle and I look at each other and bust up laughing. The BIG Sarah? Both of us jump on radio telling Cowboy how much trouble he’s in. Kyle tells him to say he meant to say Jami. Haha. Today we thought we had a really long drive, but instead only had a medium long drive, but either way, we left super early for it. I stayed in bed almost an hour past my alarm, making packing quite hurried. The first several hours of the drive were as usual- sleeping. Then lunch at a rest stop that goes over the freeway ... read more

The lessons we learn which come at a great cost to us, often stick with us. This is what I tell myself right now to endure the suffering caused by TravelBlogs decision to wipe away an hour and a half of heart and soul wrenching writing rather than saving it, as TravelBlog was apparently preoccupied by database maintenance and could not be troubled with my little piece of creative writing, my meager attempt to entertain myself and whatever masochistic personalities might try to decipher my writings for some meaning or value. Speaking of which, shall I attempt to rewrite with the same passion my story of preparation for my voyage a second time, and reveal once more to the world the twisted blows that fate has dealt my agenda? That was rhetorical, whether or not you ... read more

Or, “The Puking Uk.” (pronounced yuke) I had a good lie in today. I woke up after Sarah got back from working out, and then she left again to take Alice to the doctor and run some errands, so I was on my own for a while. Kyle called me to let me know he wouldn’t be joining us for anything today, as he was sick. I could hear it in his voice, even. So I went over to get lunch, but I didn’t realize that I had to cross TWO highways (one being the interstate) to get anywhere. After lunch, I talked to Kyle, who was still sick but thinking maybe he could eat, so I found something for him to try to eat. After a little bit, Sarah came back and she took Dana ... read more

The first time we came to Kentucky, last January, we ended up driving to Indiana for pizza. Today, I drove to Kentucky for pizza, but at least it was on purpose this time. I rented a car and drove down to Lousiville, KY to visit a friend of mine. Amy is from there, but lives in Spokane because her husband is in the Air Force and came home because he is deployed. I was going to see her on Sunday, but it didn’t work out because she has a sick baby, but I got to spend most of today with her today, which was fun. Let me tell you though, there are a lot of semi trucks on I-65 between Indy and Lousiville! And it’s two-lanes, and they want to pass each other, making it harder ... read more

Today was pretty low-key. I slept in! Then I did laundry while wearing my last clean everything. We all went to the church that’s hosting the kids to play with them for a little, and it was our last chance to see Christine before she leaves. The kids all ran screaming towards us when we walked in, which made it super loud in the gym. I had my hair down, which of course made the girls go crazy and they decided to tie (braid) it. Wow. Susan did one side; Rebecca did another, and then undid it and did it again, and Claire did the back. It was pretty fantastic. Joshua B. said I looked like an African woman. When I asked if I could sing like one, they told me I just needed to dance ... read more

The only purpose of today was to travel, which we did. We drove from Madisonville, Kentucky to Lousiville, Kentucky (which took us into Indiana first), where I was going to meet up with a friend. Unfortunately, her phone has been dead and it didn’t work out for us to connect today, but I’m hoping to go down sometime this week to visit. Then up to Indianapolis. We’ve got a few days off here, and we’re in the same hotel we were in last spring when we were here for a few days off. All of us have been starved for a church service, so Kyle found us a church with an evening service. I was a little hesitant about what kind of service it would be- my church is by far the least “traditional” out of ... read more

Jan 31, 2009 Saturday These are the adventures of Rick and Deb, the Wandering the Americas tour - 2009 We are riding together on an '08 BMW R1200 GS Adventure named Bear (This is a motorcycle - for you non-biker types) We are camping in a Big Agnes - Big House 6 tent, using Big Agnes insulated air mattresses, and Bear is really loaded up. We left Indianapolis IN USA about 2:30p with Bear loaded up and tied down in the back of the Toyota Truck. Star came with us to drive the truck back to Indy when we decided we had gone far enough south to run out of the snow and cold. We drove to Elizabethtown KY, got a room at the Motel 6. Very spartan accommodations but reasonably clean. The whole area had ... read more

With less than two weeks left (!!!!) tomorrow I am heading into Chicago to get my VISA. Hopefully everything will go smoothly. However we're talking about international travel here so my expectations aren't that high especially after my friend Liz's experience. Though thanks to her advice I believe my trip to the French consulate should run pretty smoothly despite the fact that I have to wake up at the awful hour of 6 AM. As anybody who knows me can tell you I am not a morning person and punctuality, especially in the morning, is not my strong suit. That and the fact that I will be sitting around for two hours due to the train schedule...eh c'est la vie. Just one more painful thing to do to experience what j'espère will be the experience of ... read more
