Today was the end of our Chicago trip schedule. We said goodbye to Caroline along with Al and Sandy who were giving her a lift to Detroit where Caroline would visit a friend. (So much for Don's original idea of booking British Airways so that the three of us could fly together via London.) Likewise we thanked Mike and Rob for their part in the Chicago shindig, while looking forward to seeing them again in a couple of months at the wedding party of their daughter Katie. We packed our bags, stowed them with the hotel concierge, and stepped out to eat at one of the few kosher places (all open only for lunch) in central Chicago. The first leg of our homebound flight pair was due to depart Chicago at 6pm and land at 6:45am ... read more

On the morning after the wedding, Sammi's parents hosted breakfast at the hotel. Besides recalling immediate highlights of last night's memorable event, it gave us another chance to see family before they began dispersing. We saw Don's great-nephew Ari as he approaches his third birthday this summer. We only previously saw him shortly after he was born at the previous Nadel family fete. His maternal grandfather Elliot Francke gave us the book he wrote and published "Upon a Time: The Darkness behind the Tales". This unusual medieval mystery is an interesting story and we await the sequel. Ari's parents Russ and Tara and his aunt Fran had to leave soon after breakfast. We knew that as teachers Russ and Fran had to get home before Monday classes. However some bad news made their departure even more ... read more

Today began at the Chicago Loop Synagogue. The service was as expected and the people were friendly. They apologised that the kiddush was minimal. Normally they have a big kiddush including hot chulent but due to some flooding which affected the synagogue building the kitchen and its hall were out of bounds. When we checked a couple days earlier we learned this situation, so we had obtained some extra salads from Milt's for our shabbat lunch rather than relying on the kiddush for our meal. RIght after dark we were off to the wedding! This was held at the City Winery. A yellow school picked up the wedding guests from the hotel and took us to a very nice function hall where both the chuppah and the party were held. As we waited and had pre-wedding ... read more

Today was a relatively lazy day. After a late breakfast we visited with a few of the family. With the arrival of Lee, all four brothers were together for the first time in years. We wandered out with Caroline but did not stray too far from the hotel in the cold wind. We found a vegetarian sandwich bar which the three of us enjoyed. It got dark relatively early. That is not unusual for winter time in Chicago! For kabbalat shabbat we debated going to shul or staying in our hotel room. We had found the local synagogue when walking around town, and it was not very far away. So despite the cold and possibly wet evening, we decided to join the community for bringing in shabbat We were glad we went to the Chicago Loop ... read more

Today our body clocks were out of sync. We awoke much too early. By 7am Caroline likewise couldn’t sleep any longer. So the three of us decided to look for some breakfast and to get food from a 'health' market. It was certainly colder outside than we were used to, but at least it did not rain nor snow. We found the South Loop Market and picked up some supplies which we brought back to the hotel. After breakfast the two of us wandered around the shops, looking for US bargains. Caroline declined the shopping trip. We were particularly interested in the huge Macy's, but after roaming several floors all that we purchased were two cups of coffee. We peeked into a few more shops but decided we really didn't care any more. Upon returning to ... read more

After months of planning we were off to the US for the family wedding of Don's nephew Ben. Chicago is the home of bride Sammi and groom Ben, and Sammi's parents too. We were excited because this would be the first gathering of Don's family in two-and-a-half years, as well as meeting Sammi for the first time. We elected to fly British Airways in order to fly together with Caroline from London. We met up at Heathrow airport and boarded the BA flight to Chicago. Considering the London to Chicago flight was 11 hours, we figured to spend a bit of time on the plane chatting with Caroline. As it turned out, Lesley and Caroline were often awake or asleep at opposite times. Ultimately there was a bit of mother and daughter time before landing. As ... read more

No interesting pictures or stories tonight. Quick entry to say Hello. We are in Chicago. We were here before 1pm. Not much to say. We left our house around 4:30am and thanks to the thick fog, the road construction between Houston and Rolla, and the backed-up traffic in St Louis, we arrived at the airport exactly on time. We flew United Airlines ~ St Louis to Chicago ~ our paperwork said 1 hour 28 minutes and neither of us thought that was correct. We have made that flight multiple times prior at 45 minutes. Kamie timed our flight from takeoff to landing and it was 43 minutes. We sat in a holding area with multiple other United planes waiting for another plane to leave before we could taxi to our gate… so that was another 25 ... read more

Another day of travel and another day closer to home. We left Missouri when we crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois and drove most of the way across the state before settling up camp near Champaign, Illinois. When I pulled into the campground and opened the camper door I got yet another discouraging surprise. The steps are supposed to come out when you open the door but they did not and they will not. I crawled under to investigate and I lubricated all the joints and banged on things. I didn't see anything bent or stuck and all the wires are intact. I checked the fuses and circuit breakers but nothing was wrong, so that's about it as far as a road fix goes, unless a brilliant idea occurs to me. We went out for supper ... read more

There we were awake at 4am & even all the clocks set in advance didn't have to wake us. The hotel shuttle all ready for us at 5.30, friendly staff, no time for the breakfast but sent us on the way with a packed paper lunch bag 'grab n go'. Cute felt like we were off to school. The airport was so quiet that our booking in only took 10mins & we were ushered promptly through to customs check...so much for the 'grab n go'! anything to beat a queue! We left at 8am, 4 hours to Chicago, 3.5 hour transit, 8.5hours to Rome. (We arrived the next day at 8.40am to a sunny Rome. By the time we got to our apartment it was just on 24hours awake/journey time.) We noted the tornado signs above ... read more

The drive from Buffalo was a long and pretty boring one. You don't see many international tourists when you stop on the highway service areas here. This is one serious drive, starting with Upper New York State, than the North-West of Pennsylvania followed by crossing Ohio and Indiana to finally end in Illinois. We also drive actually pretty close to Michigan. The road follow for a while Lake Erie, but we actually never saw it! If you want to park in downtown Chicago, be ready to pay up to 65usd per night...just to park your car! Hotels in Chicago are actually relatively cheap if you compare the rates to New York, but that parking fee would kill it. So we are simply staying next to O'hare airport....and are not charged for letting our little Mustang sleep ... read more
