Today was a great day from the start! I have never understood the physiology, but some days one just feels stronger than others! It was a hot humid day, but that did not seem to matter. I felt very strong from the start and it never changed. When I began this morning, I was thinking I would put in two short bicycle days to arrive in Carbondale tomorrow as Bruce and I had planned. But once the ride began, the legs felt so darn good I just kept peddling away, and a mere 62 miles later, I arrived in Carbondale sopping wet but feeling terrific! And the best part was that I could get a cold ? at the end of the day! I stopped for a bit in a Subway restaurant when I saw a ... read more

Two states down, eight to go! Wow! That sounds like I have barely started! Now that Kentucky is behind me,I must reflect: Sitting behind my handlebars, Kentucky was really two diverse regions. East of Berea, the Appalachian Mountain region dictated the severe up and downs, the hollows between the hills, and a lot of apparent poverty. This is coal country and our Nation’s movement away from Coal has devastated the Eastern Kentucky economy. West of Berea, Kentucky was flatter but never level, mostly grazing land and to the east it was mostly farm lands. I saw, hay, corn, soy beans and tobacco. It seems a ride on lawnmower is as ubiquitous as a dishwasher in these parts. Lawns are beautiful and freshly mowed everywhere in western Kentucky. If you are considering riding the Trans Am Bicycle ... read more

Friday, May 18th. We had fun today. We had a relatively short drive from Port Washington to downtown Chicago. Once again we altered our plans and decided to explore downtown before driving out to the suburbs to meet our friends. We drove along the coast and entered the Millennium Park Garage. It was below the Harris Theatre and adjacent to the Millennium Amphitheater. From there it is a short walk to the river. We took a 1.5 hour "Architecture Tour" on the Chicago River. It was very informative and relaxing. That is until the rain started. The city has seen a lot of development over the last 100 years and the architectural trends are apparent. Plus, it is not over. New projects along the river are still underway. One issue of note was the "river walk" ... read more

Oak Park, Illinois We drove into Chicago again for Joan’s last Chicago rebellion item - the Frank Lloyd Wright houses at Oak Park. Try as I could to come up with a train schedule from here in Indiana all the way across the big metropolitan area, nothing was going to work very well. Google said we were looking at a minimum 3 hour trip using public transportation. That was going to make for a very long day. So I ended up fueling up the car and we drove the entire 60 miles using the freeway system most of the way. As someone told us earlier in our trip, Chicago only has two seasons, winter and construction, so the highways were a mess with lots of orange barrels and signs. Our car GPS doesn’t know much about ... read more

Hyde Park, Chicago, IL We’ve been using our current campground as a home base while we explore two very different areas - the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the City of Chicago. Mostly it works, especially for the shorter trips to the Lakeshore areas for beach walking and hikes. I have to admit, though, that managing our Chicago experiences has been difficult at times, mostly because of the logistics. There are just two ways to get to Chicago - commuter train and car. The Train is cheaper, but you are bound by their schedule and on the weekends, that schedule can really be difficult to work with because there are many fewer trains running. Driving takes less time and works on your timetable, but, including gas and parking, ends up being expensive. The frustrations of finding ... read more

Pullman National Monument, Pullman, Illinois There is just one bucket-list stop in Illinois. Yes, it has two historic sites - the Lincoln Home and the Chicago Portage - but I did not include Historic Sites in my bucket list because they are usually small and there are so many of them that it would mean a lot of additional traveling. (I’ve been admonished by real ‘Park collectors’ that you can’t claim to be one of them unless you do every single NPS site, but, alas, we’ve already missed so many of them that it would be nearly impossible to make them up anyway. So, my bucket list remains as is! And so there !) But there is a single National Monument in Illinois and we went there yesterday. It is located in a section of southern ... read more

River North/Streeterville Neighborhoods, Chicago, IL Today’s rebellion item was food and, once again, Joan had to twist my arm to join her. Specifically, we did a ‘food tour’ offered by Chicago Food Planet, one of several companies that provide these things. The first time we did one of these was last year in Savannah, Georgia, and I have to say that this is a great way to see parts of a city. The basic idea is that you gather a group of tourists, usually on-line, and match them with a young, energetic resident of the city who is proud of her town and has studied quite a bit about history and architecture. Then you gather at a particular restaurant and begin the tour. You move between restaurants sampling different signature foods that are either specialties of ... read more

Art Institute, Chicago, IL Joan is so much fun to travel with. So often she reacts like a kid in a candy shop when she is exposed to something new. She can completely lose herself when she reads a book or watches movies and I have to nudge her to get her attention. And so it was for most of yesterday. Joan is a city girl, of sorts. She was born and raised in Los Angelos and then spent the bulk of her life in Albuquerque. Albuquerque is a city of half-million (metro area) so counts as a city but not really a big one. Los Angelos is the second largest city in the country, but as we are all aware, L.A. grew up in the automobile age and is structured horizontally with freeways tying the ... read more

Indiana Dunes State Park, Porter, IN There was only one day in the whole trip that I was concerned about driving the big rig, and that was yesterday’s drive around Chicago - the nation’s third largest city. I feel I’m a pretty good driver - in fact, I’ve been driving about 50 years now and never been in an accident, (except once when I guy hit me from the rear because he couldn’t stop on ice, but I don’t think that counts.). But driving a big car with an even bigger trailer where your blind spots are pretty good size on both sides is a bit more challenging. And if you are hitting a big city where you don’t know your way and you have to navigate different highways, which usually means changing lanes, it can ... read more

Wednesday – Friday, 7-9 March We did a farewell tour of Kirkwood on Wednesday and did The Wall one more time for good measure. I really like that run. Thursday was the farewell tour of Heavenly and a balmy 4C on the mountain so we finished the way we arrived – in warm weather. We finished early and ran around returning our skis and snow chains, as well as getting a couple of things fixed. We even got half back on our used skis so the whole thing only cost us A$150 for a month for both of us. Buying used was definitely the way to go. We left early on Friday morning so we had time to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Unfortunately, when we arrived it was a complete white out! Ocean fog had ... read more
