I'm heading out early tomorrow morning on another solo adventure. The weather is probably going to be the biggest challenge with rain tomorrow and pretty cold temps up in the north country. Three wheels makes it a lot more safe and doable, though. I'm going to ride as many two lane roads as I can and just use the interstates to get away from Chicago and bypass other large towns. Let's hope the color is at it's peak and I get some clear weather to get good photos.... read more

My mom is the youngest of five children. All but two of them live within a half-mile radius of my childhood home. I have one uncle who lives in Durham, NC and another who lives in Chicago, IL. When my husband and I were able to travel to Illinois a few weeks ago for a work conference, we extended the trip by a few days so we could spend time with my uncle in his neck of the woods. He is an author of religious studies and travels quite frequently for his work. As such, he manages to come visit us every now and again, though it had been years since we had visited him up north. In the interim since we had taken that trek, he moved from his home in the suburbs to an ... read more

It’s been a whirlwind three days in Chicago, and Sharon and I covered a lot of ground (in steamy heat, I might add - the heat/humidity index today was 102degrees, and it felt like breathing through wet blankets) The “main event” was a John Singer Sargent exhibit at the Chicago Institute of Art - zowie! There was a George Jensen silver show ? in the next room, which made us drool. We also got to a farmers market, an art festival on Glen Ellyn lake, and I tried a Chicago pizza and hot dog (loaded, it’s perfection). Now sitting in ORD, waiting to board Norwegian Premiere Class for London. I’ll shout when I’m on the other side of the pond!... read more

It will get better - a promise to myself and to you, Gentle Reader. I’ve written before, and I’ve posted before, so how hard can this be? Stick around, and find out. My UK Autumn Adventure begins with a three day visit to friends in the Chicago area. Sharon and Norm Brockmeier live in Wheaton, a charming town full of 1880s architectural gems and bustling urban scene. Pizza and chocolate already sampled, more to come. Since I’d been awake 24+ hours, short naps have been an essential part of my first day, but we managed to get to the lovely (and cool and rainy) Morton Arboretum to go on a fun troll hunt (or be hunted?) Catch me if you can!... read more

We were up and rolling a little earlier this morning...pulling out at 9:00. We had heard a weird sound from the truck when we pulled into camp yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, we heard it again even worse when we drove out of the campground this morning. Fortunately for us, we were just about four miles from a truck repair place (Effingham Tire and Repair Center) with a great reputation...sort of like Hobbs at home. At any rate, we stopped in there to get an idea of what was going on. Of course we had to get in line with folks with appointments but that was fine with us. After about an hour, a tech came out and checked our brakes. As John had thought, we had brake and rotor issues. The tech was able to find the ... read more

This isn’t our most exciting day, unless you are one of our complaining neighbors that think we need to hurry home...and you KNOW who you are... Just Saying... We pulled out of camp a little later than usual (10:15) mainly because we got into an interesting conversation with a Canadian couple that were in the site next to us. They have recently retired and were on their way to Newfoundland and then back to the Maritime Provinces and then more touring in Canada as they head back to British Columbia Province with no particular time frame. They were delightful, and we very much enjoyed talking to them. We crossed the border (the Mississippi River) into Illinois at 10:45, stopping for pictures at the Welcome Center. It was 80 degrees and humid...not boding well for our arrival ... read more

Today we are headed to St Joseph, MO. Very long day. The roads were rough today. Lots of bouncing. We stopped in St Joseph, MO at an RV Park named Sharp RV Park. Nice park, nice attendant, had wifi. Later Jack cooked cube steak, mashed potatoes, beans n salad. Jeri fixed deviled eggs and Aleta fixed bread. Only $15.00 per night, can't beat that, pullthru sites. The guy allowed Passport America discounts to all. Goodnight!!... read more

Well we had set the alarm to go off at 3.20am which is a crazy way to start a holiday but we had a 7.03am flight to catch and as are going to Chicago, it’s an international flight with extra security. Breakfast was not open but they let us grab a muffin and some bananas. The shuttle to the airport was not operating so they put us in a taxi for the short 10 minute ride to the United Airlines terminal. We had a good run through security and immigration, and interestingly we did not go through Canada immigration but through USA even though we were in Canada? The good news is that means when we arrive in Chicago it is a domestic flight so no security when we get there. We had breakfast at Tim ... read more
