Well it is September 29th and we made it. Entered the Harbor at Nawiliwili in Kauai, Hawaii and man was it nice to have the ship sitting still. I think a lot of people were not feeling well on the way over. We go here a day early since we had to turn around as I mentioned before. This is one of three stops we are making in Hawaii (being a chain of 8 islands). Kauai is small with only 63,000 people. We have a great day scheduled tomorrow. I emailed Ellen at Wings over Kauai, whose husband, Bruce gives tours in his Cessna 182 (I think) of the island. It was 70 minutes of some of the most beautiful scenery we have ever seen. Waimea canyon, which is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific ... read more

We're starting to countdown the days. We've been in the planning mode for several months, and our build is now less than 3 weeks away. We are getting excited, finalizing our plans, and anticipating our last team meeting before our departure. Our awesome leaders Beth and Kathy have recruited a team of 16 volunteers, all willing to put their current lives "on the back burner" for a few days to participate in this Thrivent Builds Worldwide trip. When we arrive, we will take a team picture with our Thrivent Builds t-shirts and then post for you. But for now, here's a list of the team members: * Beth (co-lead) * Brett * Chrissy * Ellen * Greg (blogger) * Howie * Kathy L * Kathy K (co-lead) * Lisa (photographer) * Lois * Marilyn * ... read more

I had two Wednesdays this week as I left Australia on Wednesday evening and flew all night on the 10 hour leg to Honolulu where I arrived slightly dazed and confused early on another Wednesday morning. There is a 20 hour time difference between the two countries which took a few days to adjust to, but it was fun having my own mini Groundhog Day and I enjoyed having an extra day in my life. Its also a year since I started this trip, which is kind of special too. I grabbed a shuttle bus to an airport hotel where I spent the night and flew out first thing the next morning to the “Garden Island” of Kauai. Its a bit of a pain having to be at the airport 2 hours before the 30 minute ... read more

Today we’re in Kauai. I started the day off with a helicopter ride over the island. But by 10am, I was finished with the helicopter tour, leaving me with another 6 hours to explore what has become my favourite island in Hawaii. Some of the girls from the ship met me at the rental car agency at the airport and then we headed out to explore the South side of the island, our main goal being Waimea Canyon. It took about 45 minutes to reach the little town at the base of the road going up to the canyon. We stopped to grab some snacks at a store, then headed up the winding road to the top of the canyon. Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. I haven’t seen the Grand ... read more

We were able to hit up Kauai for 4 days on our recent visit to Hawaii (Jan. 2010). It was my 2nd trip back to Kauai . . . this time I skipped the one day full Kalalau Trail hike and took it a little easier. We stayed at the retro (and cheap) Kauai Sands hotel in Kapaa. By the time we left there the traffic was backed up for miles because of work on a bridge . . . something that was anticipated to stay that way for quite a while. There is nothing special about Kapaa but it is a centrally located place if you have a limited amount of days and are trying to get around to see most of the island. In our four days we wondered around Hanalei, kayaked on the ... read more

We would have liked to have been blogging the whole trip...but that's not the point of vacation. But now we have a few minutes with a computer while waiting to check into a hotel... Let's see. We started with a day or two on Oahu. The highlight was snorkeling at Hanauma Bay...with sea turtles and tons of cool coral. Not much else to speak of here...no pictures of this. We spent our first day on Oahu at Pearl Harbor, aboard the USS Bowfin and Missouri. And that's it...off to Kauai. Kauai was wonderful. Loved it. Had great sun, great swimming and snorkeling the whole trip. Hiking the Kalalau Trail was the highlight. Camping at the county campgrounds was also a wonderful thing that saved us mucho dinero on this trip. $3 a night per person to ... read more

This morning we woke up in the port of Nawiliwili, Kaua’i. At this port, the ship ties up to the pier so our days of tendering are over. We decided to have one last “leisurely” breakfast in the Club restaurant. It was good as always and then we headed to the pier to meet our tour. Today’s tour was apparently very popular as there were multiple buses. They took the first 18 of us who arrived early to a small bus and we got to leave first (ahead of the other buses). Our bus driver Marilyn is a fulltime school bus driver and works tours when they need her. Because we were a small bus, we were able to go a few places that the big buses could not. Our first stop was the Spouting Horn. ... read more
