We travel today from Maui to Honolulu (2hr lay-over) to Kaua'i. So we start with shuttles to the airport. Our group is too big to fit in one shuttle trip so we make 2 trips. Luckily the airport is not far away. Our flights from Maui to Honolulu and Honolulu to Kaua'i are uneventful and we pick up our baggage and go outside to wait for our bus. Now, Susan has already told us that because of the unavailablty of motorcoaches on Kaua'i, and the fact that some areas where we need to go are too small for coaches, we will be using a school bus - Yes, a yellow school bus. When we see the yellow school bus turn the corner, we all cheer and make many jokes about going back to school and being ... read more

We really needed the free day to rest. It was great for us. Others took full advantage of the suggestions Susan had made to see more sights. We're glad we took it easy. We were much fresher for the flight to Kaua'i with a layover in Honolulu. We were met at the Lihu'e airport by a big yellow bus. Being the oldest of the immediate Hawai'ian chain, kaua'i is also not as developed as Maui, Oahu, and the Big Island. We were glad to have the school bus because it could go places a standard coach could not. Sitting over its back wheels as we did much of the time was not bad, though a coach bus we rode in on Oahu sure reminded us of how rough it had actually been. We picked up lunch ... read more

Tuesday January 13, 2009 - Friday January 16, 2009 We kicked off our 2009 Hawaii trip in Kauai; a very scenic, under developed side of Hawaii. Tuesday: Off the plane, I was dealing with sleep deprivation and jet lag. It was difficult to want to do anything but sleep. We split a pizza in Kapaa and then headed to the hotel to call it a night. Wednesday: Wednesday was our most enjoyable, productive day on Kauai. After a hearty breakfast, we rushed to the north side of the island to visit beaches and do a bit of hiking. We spent most of our afternoon hiking the Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast. The trail ran along the cliffs overlooking beautiful views of the ocean. I found the 4 mile experience extremely rewarding given the challenge ... read more

Aloooooooha! This is the first and last hello you will get from Hawai'i, and we apologize to everyone for not posting anything sooner! Kate and I are awaiting a lovely steak dinner her parents have prepared for tonight's "Last Supper." Don't worry, we've addressed Kate's vegaterian needs as well.... The days since I've been here have been absolutely amazing! Lots of beach everyday! We played tennis the first day I was here and Kate and I totally wooped Megan and Ali in a doubles match 6 games to 2...sorry girls, your sister taught me to play a tight game of tennis. New Years came and we all had our fare share of spirits, before and after the amazing fireworks display over the Pacific Ocean in front of the Sheraton in Poi'pu. On the second last day ... read more

Hitchhiking is the best way to get around Kauai. The bus is only $1.50 but it doesnt run on sundays or holidays. and the bus only runs to 730pm. and the buses dont go everywhere. people really do pick up hitchhikers on kauai. noone should drive in a car without at least one passenger to lighten the carbon footprint. it is pleasant. i like being able to have a 15 minute personal conversation with a stranger. you get all of their attention so you get to learn alot about a perfect stranger. the first question is always, 'how long have you been on the island?' so far only one person has told me that they were born here. everybody else has a story about how they came to be on the island. it is interesting to ... read more

I made it to Kauai a few days ago. Spent much of Thurday settling in. Had to go to the storeroom and get the bike running. Started up with no problems. Took it for a ride to recharge the battery and had breakfast at the Tip Top. Not much changes there. Jackassed all my stuff back and forth to the condo in Poipu. Only a few yards from the beach. Not much of a room but thats fine. Bought the rental car back, took a cab to Puhi, got on the bike and cruised home. I thought about that only a few days before I was in the Bahamas. Traded one ocean for the other. But, of course, I injured my foot right away. I always seem to do something to them here. This time it ... read more

I landed in Lihue, the county seat of Kauai, in the same plane as Rob and Danielle. It was dark when we arrived but the weather was pleasant. i didnt get to see anything on the way to Rob's place. they put me up for the night. i awoke the next morning while it was still dark. i followed the sound of waves crashing on a beach. i found myself in the middle of a huge bay(hanalei bay yes this is where puff the magic dragon lives seen from heights curled in the landscape of the hills and mountains around the bay). i watched the dark sky take on reds and oranges and yellows and eventually blue as the sun rose on the horizon. the dark shadows behind me took the shape of kauai's mountains. rippling ... read more

=) ===================================================================================================================== On the third and unfortunately last day on Kauai we did a "Zipline" Adventure! For everyone who's wondering what that is: Just check out... read more
