Approximately 13 months ago, I had my first Kalalau experience over a long July 4th weekend. Since then I have spent seven months backpacking in South America and seen many amazingly beautiful things, but all that has only convinced me further that Kalalau is perhaps the most beautiful place on the planet. Throughout my recent travels abroad, I have looked forward to my next Kalalau journey. Anticipating minimal employment and ideal summer weather, I dreamt of a week long camping trip, but little did I know I'd be thrown right into a relatively busy work schedule. Finally, a date was picked for a three day weekend Kalalau trip, but as the date approached, it became an inconvenient time for almost everybody who had talked about possibly going. Having not been in over a year and not ... read more

In 2007 I went camping with my wife, Caroline, a French-Canadian Montrealer who is totally in love with Hawaii. I am too, and our dream is to one day buy ourselves out of all the noise and buy a large plot of land in Hawaii and live quietly and harmoniously with nature. We have visited Maui twice, Oahu and the Big Island some time ago, so now it was time for Kauai. The moment we landed, it definitely felt different from the other Hawaiian islands. It just felt a little quieter and definitely a lot more green and moist. We also found the beaches a lot cleaner and nicer. The locals, as well as the local transplants were more relaxed than the ones from Oahu or even Maui, but not much more than the ones from ... read more

Hey Everyone- Few weeks late as usual, but here are all the spectacular pics from Kim and Erin's visit to the island. We had so much fun. I realize some our dupes from Facebook, but guess you'll just have to deal with it... hehe Also, I think it should be noted what was going on behind the scenes of all these pictures. While Kim was planning her and Erin's exciting daily adventures in Hawaii.... someone back at home was planning some extremely exciting future plans. A week after Kim got back from Hawaii... Jamie proposed :) Congrats again girlie! So happy for you! OK well that's all for now. Hope everyone is doing great. Talk soon. Love, Allison... read more

We headed to the airport with Jay and caught our flights with no problems. Then we waited a bit for Dean and Catherine, and after getting a bit worried Jay went looking for them, and rolled up in a massive Jeep Wrangler! They had been upgraded! We all jumped in, went to Safeway and met Ally at our hostel. Dean had already warned me that the hostel was a bit rough…we didn’t really know what that meant until we got in. It was mostly ok, a bit shabby in bits, but it was right across from the ocean, and there was a small beach 5 mins away. However Catherine and Dean were here a few days before us and stayed in the room Pen and I booked, but Catherine got bit by something, and they ... read more

5/4/2009 Leaving this Thursday for Kaua'i. This was a last minute change from a trip to the Riviera Maya area of Mexico. I was looking forward to some snorkeling in Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen; however, the Swine Flu became a little to real for us, so now it's Hawaii. We are staying at the Wyndham Ka'eo Kai Resort in Princeville. Trip Report Wyndham Ka'eo Kai Resort: The front desk was a little difficult to find because it still has the old hotel name on it. There is a small banner type of sign on the road that says Wyndham, that's where you turn in. At check in they make you go to the concierge to get your parking pass, oh and to try to get you to go to a timeshare presentation...actually, any time you ... read more

Doesn't it sound hardcore? Well, it wasn't so bad... We're alive... and so is the four year old kid we also saw clambering over the cliffs, so no need to worry! The pictures speak for themselves, so we'll let them do most of the talking... To sum it up: it was 25 miles (40kms) of cliff-side hiking through dense jungle, over sheer, rocky cliffs, and to a semi-permanent "hippie-colony" where naked people let it alllll hang out - a great hike, spread over four days. We were a little worried about it - The Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali coast - seeing its 9/10 Sierra Club difficulty ratings, and words used to described it including: treacherous, challenging, grueling, "one mis-step could be your last" etc - but it was not nearly as worrisome as we ... read more

In the morning, I took off to the lighthouse because Judy said it was her favorite quiet place on the island. It's just on the North Shore -- can't miss it. It's also a bird sanctuary. I saw my first Albatross. It flew up with it's big feet and then flew down back into its nesting area. There were huge waves that day and breaking on the rocks about forty feet high! The volunteers there who told you about the place were really nice and one took a picture of yours truly looking from the ocean to the shore. Not long after Kyle recovered from his sightseeing, we all went down to the beach. After walking around and looking at all the living coral that had washed up from the HUGE waves, Alan and I did ... read more

So here's a photo of the bookstore in Hanapepe and there was another author there. Her name was Anne Dimock and she wrote a book called "Humble Pie." By gosh, a famous book indeed. It's all about pies and one night she had tiny pies for the customers to sample. (All I could offer were invisible pieces of the ocean.) Anne's also a playwright, originally, so we had a lot to talk about and we made pie and playwright-type jokes in between signing our non-fiction books. When Anne isn't signing books, she's checking out huge outriggers as part of an outrigger team on the island. We both sold out of our books and then got leid by the bookstore owners which means -- fragrant plumera flowers all around our necks. Ed and Cynthia, the bookstore's mellow ... read more

Like I've said, with travel, I'm working with this: I go where I'm invited. So I was doing CST work in Chicago earlier this year on the invitation of a fine fellow that I'd met in Florida at Trump's by Gosh "Mar a Friggin Largo", named Alan. Alan invites me to Chicago and then to Kauai with his Bros. Here's everybody in Kauai right now. We're on the North Shore. It's very cool here. (Some rain.) Alan sent me an email about some places in Kauai to present the book. We had an event at the Talk Story Bookstore in Hanapepe on Friday the 6th and will have another on Friday the 13th, from 6 to 9 PM. It's a very cool book, "Touch the Ocean: The Power of Our Collective Emotions," and Kauai just dances ... read more
