Thanks for my wife and family they are sending me off to relax, Re-create and work in Kauai, HI. I know, sounds rough and fantastic - but without my Wife and Family, it is odd for me. Thanks to Rabbs & Kenni for taking me to the airport and Thanks Tayber for lending me your camera (didn't think he'd mind). Here I go.... read more

The video here shows that the transients from all the Tsunami wave effects had not yet died out and were still very much ongoing. The first Tsunami wave from Japan was estimated to be a 2 meter wave or increase in sea level, but was to arrive at 3:07am on 11 Mar 2011. This video was shot at around noon that same day, so just less than 9 hours after the first effects of the Tsunami were to be seen.... read more

Tuesday 12-7 We spent today exploring the South and West Shores of Kauai. The western side of the island is much different from any other. It’s VERY dry and several degrees hotter – quite a different looking landscape. No lush forests or much green at all. In fact there are a lot of flat fields, perfect for dry crops like corn and sugar cane – which we saw a lot of. Everything – from the roads to the tops of telephone poles – are covered in red dust from the dark red volcanic mud on the island. It’s hard to believe that both the north and west side of Kauai are part of the same island – they’re so different and only about 30 miles apart! We drive up to Waimea Canyon, which has been described ... read more

Saturday 12-4 We rised and shined at 5am (ugh) and said our goodbyes to Miranda :o( We started the 11 mile hike thru the Na Pali coast at about 7am and all seemed to be going well for the first few miles until my left knee decided it wasn’t going to bend or allow any weight on it anymore. I think I sprained my knee or did something to it last week in San Francisco over Thanksgiving. The pain went away before we started our trip, so I figured it was fine. But ugh, that sh*t hurts now! We made the decision to keep going and after limping another 8 miles or so, we made it to Kalalau Beach. How to describe the trail? The pali (cliffs) are breath taking and the top-down views of the ... read more

Phew, 3 days of hiking the Na Pali Coast and we’re back in our cozy guest house, eating pasta and watching reruns of the Daily Show (as you can see, life on the road is not much different than life in Redondo Beach). While we’re waiting for the laundry to dry, I’ll fill you in on the past 4 days. Thursday 12-2 We left LA (it was really hard to say goodbye to Trent), where we proceeded to meet two Kauai locals who shared with us their life story and tips on where to get deals in Kauai. Not a bad start. We met Miranda in Kauai (a friend of mine from Woods Hole, now living in Oahu) and proceeded to the nicest guest house ever! This place is awesome - huge rooms, full kitchen and ... read more

While our last official build day was Saturday, Oct 23rd, we spent a few extra days in Hawaii after the build. We will close out our blog with this entry. If you've read our previous entries, hopefully you observed that indeed there is alot of hard work on builds. The main purpose of this trip was to help Habitat for Humanity with their mission in providing decent affordable housing for families in need. But, let us assure you there is also plenty of fun throughout a build like this. This blog entry will share some additional pictures of some of the activities we did after our build. On Sunday, Oct 24th we again went to church in the morning to start the day our right! From there, we split up and enjoyed a day of sightseeing ... read more

Hmmm.....it's hard to believe that today was our last day of our build. It seems like we just started. No doubt, emotions were strong today as we finished up at the build site. Major initatives for the day were to work on the soffits, blocking up the kitchen walls where the cabinets will be mounted, and continue with Friday's tasks. We'd like to share 4 pictures showing the BEFORE (day1) and AFTER (day6) results. It was a very productive week for our team. I'd like to take some extra time here to thank both Terry and Brett for their very apparent knowledge in home construction - awesome job guys in teaching and guiding the rest of us throughout the week! After work, a celebration/farewell dinner at Salt Pond Beach was planned. The Habitat affiliate prepared dinner ... read more

Well, its Friday and the week has surely gone fast. As usual we headed to the Habitat Restore at the start of our morning. But as we circled up for the devotion and talked about the goals for the day, we learned we would not be spending our first hour in the store today. Since we spent over a half day at the store on Thursday, Cindy was fine with us devoting the entire day on the home. Our day was very busy and productive. We worked on getting the rest of the trusses on the front and back porches. We also installed all the venting blocks around the entire roof line. And we also continued to work on hurricane reinforcement tasks. We again went to the Salvation Army Community Center for lunch today. And right ... read more
