The next leg of our trip was on Malaysia Airlines from Bangkok, Thailand to Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was about a 15 hour flight with one layover stop in Malaysia. One long flight.... When we got to Amsterdam we took the train to Zaandam where I lived when I was 17 years old as an exchange student for one year. I have stayed in touch with my host family and friends over the years and it was wonderful to stop by and visit before heading back to the states. Jon and Wil, my host parents, are in their 80's now. They are in the same house I lived in. The weather was cold and damp so that was a big change from the sunshine in Thailand. Amsterdam seems a bit busier than I remember. Lots of foreigners ... read more

Chaing Mai is a city of 180,000 people in the Northwest part of Thailand about 12 hours train ride north of Bangkok. We took the one hour plane ride with Air Asia instead. I think we are getting lazy. We decided to go to Chiang Mai since we heard it was a beautiful city and quite different than Bangkok. It has a quaint old section that is walled off and filled with temples. There are about 300 temples in Chiang Mai so you can imagine it has quite a sacred feel to it. One temple we visited was prayer time for the monks who where young boys all with their orange robes on chanting. We stayed in a Budget hotel called CH Hotel near the night bazaar. It was about 40US a night. That included breakfast. ... read more

It has been a few weeks (a month maybe?) since I participated in this blog. I did not go into hiding to avoid the IRS or Immigration, I just decided to come home early and attempt to get productive. As you probably have been following Dianne and Saskia's awesome trip to Thailand and wondering where Bruce went, I will explain. I have a certain need to feel productive (ie: work) if I have been taking time off. While our trip to NZ was nothing short of awesome, it did not satisfy my need for productivity. In mid-January I came back to the states and I am currently living with my inlaws in Hobe Sound, Florida. Our plan all along was for Dianne and I to make our primary residence here. It has a couple of ... read more

We decided to stay in Ko Chang for a total of 11 nights. We didn't want to leave. We searched for a new place to stay after our first 3 nights staying in our room on the river. There was quite a range of places to stay from luxurious hotels running hundreds of dollars a night to the little bungalow we chose for 600 Baht a night which is about 20 US dollars. You can imagine it was very basic. We had a bed, a very hard uncomfortable bed, a cold shower, a sink and toilet. The good thing is we were about 10 steps away from the sea depending on the tide. It was called Tiger Huts. There was a restaurant steps away as well. They were nice enough to give us a small broom ... read more

Saying good-bye to Bruce and our daughter Nicole in New Zealand was difficult but she will thankfully be coming home in 9 months and I will be back in the states soon enough. Eleven hours of flying......what a flight from Auckland to Bangkok. Thai Airways was wonderful. The plane was spotless, the chairs were comfortable and the service outstanding. I did manage to obtain three seats together to stretch out which was a nothing but a miracle. It is so difficult to describe our experience in Thailand so far, near impossible, but I will try. The steamy Asian metropolis of Bangkok is overwhelming when you see it the first time. Bangkok is a massive, hot, humid, dirty, exciting city. Taking a taxi from the airport to my cousins house was an experience in itself. I do ... read more

We have made it back to Nicole and Chris's after driving till 2:30 am. It was New Years eve here, but seemed to be on the quiet side on the roads. Other than right around Auckland and a few other big towns, things are pretty quiet here in NZ. In parts of the south island, we could drive an hour and pass 2 cars. It was definitely busier coming back on the ferry since the whole country is on vacation till after New Years. Nicole and Chris both have 3 weeks vacation over the holidays. Some of the things that happened why we were traveling: Christchurch earthquake They had another 4.6 aftershock on the day after Christmas. That is Boxing day over here and is similar to Black Friday for us. It shut down most of ... read more

Christchurch to Milford Sound : Bruce and I have been trying to keep up with our travel blog but sometimes it is difficult finding the internet . I hope you haven’d missed us too much. What did we do before the internet? How the heck did we survive? Sometimes we stop at libraries but they charge a fee there as well to use the computer. Anyway, the saga continues.... We stayed three nights in the city of Christchurch. Christchurch is the most “english” of New Zealand cities. There is the avon river, cathedrals, a tram, a city square with english style pubs and houses with manicured gardens. We went to the art museum and visited the “Ron Mueck” exhibit. What an exhibit it was. There were about 11 sculptures made of fiberglass, rubber, all different materials ... read more

The Great South Island Adventure continues - We left Picton on December 6th and headed for our next destination. Just a word to all the Kiwi’s who asked “Why are you going to Picton?”. It was really a cool little town. The whole downtown and waterfront has been redone and is very nice. We had fun and would recommend people stay and check it out, at least for a night or two. On toPohara To get to Pohara, we had to drive about 3 hours. We passed through Havelock (muscle capital of NZ), Nelson, Motueka, Takaka and then the beautiful little beach town of Pohara. From Nelson up to Farewell Spit, this area is called the Golden Bay. Full of beautiful beaches, orchards, vineyards, and vegetable farms. It is the sunniest place in all of NZ ... read more

Hi Everyone! This is Nicole speaking....I have decided to write a piece of the Layden Family blog to give Mom and Dad a break for once. We all know they are both working extremely hard. Last Monday morning the five of us took the Interislander ferry to the top of the South Island to the small town of Picton (Population 4,700). To our surprise Picton is a great little town with wicked (awesome) views, and there are tramping (hiking) trails everywhere. Our apartment is the tallest building and we are on the top floor (#5). We have been so busy here, waking up late, having our coffee, taking naps, strolling along the beach and eating. It is pretty awesome that our biggest worry is what to have for lunch that day. Two days ago we drove ... read more

I am not feeling like a Turkey because it is 75 degrees out, everything is green and we just went to the beach and a hot spring. I know, I know life is tough. We are not having turkey because they cost about $90nz (multiply by .8 to get US $) for a little weenie one about the size of the chickens in the US. So why you are all eating turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, corn, pie, cranberry sauce :), we will probably have the NZ national dish - SAUSAGES, YEA! Only kidding, we will manage something good. We have been out and about seeing some great places. NZ has more beautiful places than you can shake a sausage at. Some of the places we have seen: Auckland Zoo: Great little zoo with Tigers, Cheetahs (they ... read more
