...it's time to look towards my next move: moving to Australia. Now that my college career is over (slightly delayed, of course), I have the freedom to live and do as I please all within the confines of finances, laws and any relationship i find myself in... wait a tic. that doesn't sound as free as I thought. damn. Well, it's not worth pondering. For now, I'll allow my idealistic, twenty-something mind take me to foreign lands and to new experiences. I will be packed up and moved out of Atlanta this Saturday. I'm hoping to say goodbye to as many people as possible, but methinks I'll not get around to everyone. I suppose that is what this blog is for. It will be a safe haven for family and friends to keep tabs on me ... read more

There is not much to see at the famous Confederate Prison at Andersonville. They have I am told a great POW exhibit, but the museum was closed for renovation when I was there. What you see is a huge field, sacred ground. If you know a little history of the place it is not hard to visualize what the prison was all about. In this prison, the quards and prisoners all suffered from shortages of water and food. It was just a terrible situation. The small stream that ran through the camp and was polluted is still there. My Great Grandparent Abram Rice was a prisoner there. So was his twin brother Isaac. They were from Clear ridge Pennsylvania, served in the same unit and were captured together. I am told he was alive when they ... read more

I accidentally deleted two of my blogs on FDR and Jimmy Carter so I will have to reenter. Warm Springs Georgia was the vacation home and treatment center for FDR when he was President. The warm water felt good and FDR could move his legs a little swimming. There are many photos and videos in the museum that show FDR swimming with kids. He never claimed the warm waters could cure polio it just made him feel better. He also liked to drive his cars down here and he could talk to the people and see how they were enduring the great depression. The museum is full of artifacts of these times including FDR’s swimming suit. Of interest is a family tree showing that FDR was a second cousin to TR or Theodore Roosevelt. Also, it ... read more

Just South of Warm Springs is Plains Georgia, the home of our 39th President James Earl Carter. We were coming in from the West so we came to the Jimmy Carter’s Boyhood Home first. It was not only his home but also a farm. I thought it was a great experience visiting his boyhood home. Jimmy Carter said it best: “My life on the farm during the Great Depression more nearly resembled farm life of fully 2000 years ago than farm life today. I have reflected on it often since that time; social eras change at their own curious pace, depending on geography and technology and a host of other factors. It is incredible with what speed those changes have totally transformed both the farming methods and the very life-style I knew in my boyhood.” Jimmy ... read more

30 years in the military and the rest of his life devoted to humanitarian works. Warren Williams, the Southern Gentleman works mostly with Vietnamese kids. Warren Williams is one of many Vietnam Veterans who have gone back to a country they fought a war to promote peace and world understanding. They also promote the general welfare of the people, the Vietnamese, who have endured 40 long years of war. The Vietnam Veterans are the only veteran group I know who have done this. Warren has a web page for his work. Go to: http://www.vncp.org/index.htm His Purpose is simple: Our Purpose - From pencils to peace Give a child a pencil and world peace becomes a distinct possibility. Kate here again... Yeah...so...hi everyone who's still stumbling upon our little neglected corner of cyberspace. :) If I'd been keeping up to date on Liza's hugely successful LizaWasHere blog, I might've realized that she's been linking to us here. Needless to say, we kinda lost our travel blog momentum over the 2nd half of our trip this past summer. By the time we realized that we'd fallen off the "updated regularly" wagon, we had soooooo many pictures and general fatigue from being on the road for so long, that everything just kinda fizzled. We also had a consistent yet annoying habit of forgetting to take pictures when we were with friends and family. So consider this the official closing of this particular blog for updates. It was a GREAT trip. A fabulous time was had, and ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 29 19th November - 3rd December 2006 ‘Georgia on my mind’ Tourism is vital to the economy of most towns we visit on our journey south, and a rich history of colonisation, civil war, slavery and international trade make for a pot-pourri of interesting places to see and opportunities to learn. We often remark there is some danger of reaching the point of ‘tourist attraction’ saturation after so many months on the road. Such was the case at Beaufort in South Carolina (this one pronounced ‘boofoot’ to distinguish it from the Beaufort in North Carolina, pronounced 'bowfort'), a town boasting finely restored historic houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Regrettably, they made it difficult for us to park: a 9ft height restriction at Visitor Information, ‘Parking for busses only’ in ... read more

November 23rd 2006 The purpose of this trip was two-fold. One it was thanksgiving break and we wanted to go somewhere close and convenient and two we wanted to eat good food. So the choice was automatic. We went to Atlanta . At barely 3 and a half hours away..it was a comfortable drive and offered interesting enough things to see. I had been to Atlanta two times already, but we were planning to see the new Georgia Aquarium and the Balaji-Siva Temple which I had not seen before. We left about 8 am on Thanksgiving day so we could avoid traffic and reached there at 12:30 p.m. ( we lost an hour- due to change from Central to Eastern Time). Our first stop was Chat Patti. Karthik, Anitha and I were all hungry and ... read more
