This past weekend I went on my first ever camping trip in preparation for my second trip out west. Before I start I might as well plug my other trip journal on here, which was a trip that I took out west last May. So if you find this an interesting read at all, you might want to take a look at that as well. But this journal is about my camping out for the first time. My backpack was not too heavy...coming in at around 20 lbs which included 3 litres of water, a tent, sleeping bag, cooking stove and 1.5 litre pan, rain jacket, some extra clothes, food, and a book (which I never read of course), plus some other various stuff like aspirin, band-aides, my trusty Kershaw 4" blade knife, and of ... read more

So we left Athens, having done little in the way of sight seeing, and much in the way of stressing out over car troubles and sickness. The next stop was Atlanta, Georgia. We knew the bus needed work, but there wasn't a mechanic in Athens who could do it, so we lined up a shop in Atlanta, and that was our first stop. The Mechanics were so nice it was a little creepy. They took us to get food, and were super chatty and hospitable. They replaced our glow plugs and we were ready to go. Now Gimli starts up like a champ most of the time, and even when he doesn't, we know how to coerce him into starting. We stayed with a really great girl named Danielle and her boyfriend, who we found ... read more

This past weekend, I went farther south into the green world of Athens, Georgia. It was my first time out of North Carolina since I came down here on exchange, and it was such a fun experience. The UNCW softball girls rented a couple SUVs (2007s) and headed on the road on Friday. It took about 7 hours to get from Wilmington, NC to Athens, Georgia but the ride was a lot of fun. The first thing was saw was a place called 'South of the Border' that lies right across the North Carolina/South Carolina line. It's a cute little, Mexican world full of firework stands, some rides (twirling sombreros of all things), and lots of mexi-food. We didn't get to stop in, but it definately looks a fun tourist attraction if you have the ... read more

On our way to Athens we ran out of the little amount of veg oil we had left, and we were lucky enough to find a place along the way where we could get oil (after much searching, of course). So it took us quite a while longer than it should have to get to Athens, but we made it by evening. We had everything lined up to stay with Anthony from couchsurfing, and he was a pretty cool host. He even had an entire guest bedroom for us to stay in, which is rare. We were tired from getting up early and doing a lot of driving that day, so we just hung out at the house that night with Anthony and his girlfriend. The next day, Wes and I went to this really ... read more

Friday, April 20th, 2007 - Rincon and Savannah, Georgia: Earth Day Today is one of America’s significant days for two main reasons. One, it is the official World’s Earth Day, the day when everybody ought to plan something ‘green’ for supporting our earth’s collapsed lungs. However, it was merely a suggestion, a more symbolic task than a functional one, and it wasn’t a surprise that I couldn’t find anyone here planting anything, even for a flower, showing our society’s honest attitude towards our lovely earth. Two, it is the Remembrance Day for thirty-two victims (and one shooter?) in Virginia Tech’s shooting four days ago, and Americans are more responsive in this subject by showing the school’s colors of maroon and orange in their clothing. Kick’s Country radio conducted a couple minutes of silence at noon which ... read more

Our official moving day is finally here! We'll be getting on our plane in less than 15 hours and I'm way too excited to sleep...so I'm emailing instead :) I know it's been a while since our last "chapter" but honestly, not much has happened. We sat in Alabama for 2 months...although I took a little break and headed back up to Tennessee the last weekend in March. It all started with the fact that I needed one more haircut and just went from there lol. It really was a productive weekend...I closed out a savings account, met with our real estate agent (to date the house still hasn't sold, by the way), got my hair cut and highlighted, and figured out how to renew Matt's driver's license. To get our driver's license to drive in ... read more

For Chris's Grandparent's anniversary, we joined his family and headed to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens as a group. The gardens are located next to Piedmont park, and I honestly had never known they were even there. The facilities were amazing. We began our self guided 'tour' by visiting all the outside area's, and then working our way into the buildings with the more exotic plants. One even had birds running around among the foliage. The highlight for the group was the large room with more varieties of Orchids than I thought ever existed. One of my personal favorites was the children's garden area. (I will always be a kid at heart) and that the entire facility had large wooden 'sculptures' of insects scattered around for photo ops. The $12 admission might be considered a bit steep, ... read more

After leaving Orlando, we headed to Savannah GA because we had heard it was a neat, historic place to check out. We only had a couple days there because we had a hard time finding people on couchsurfing.com to stay with. Wes caught a cold of some sort in Orlando and was really starting to feel sick on our first full day in Savannah, so we rode our bikes into town and walked around a bit. Savannah looks a lot like New Orleans, with the huge trees lining the streets, covered in moss. We went down by the river into this sort of cheesy tourist area, wandered around downtown a little, went to the cemetery, and stopped in the park for a while. But at that point Wes was feeling pretty sick and had a ... read more
