Last Day on the Peninsula Didn’t wake this morning til almost 8 and the sky was overcast with a little breeze. The temps were mild last night, I didn’t need the heater. Coffee was wonderful and enjoyed with leisurely pleasure. Great way to start the day. I decided to try the other bath house for a shower this morning. I have been having a shower in the old bath house and freezing myself to death as the ever constant breeze blows with a vengeance through the shower room. How did it take me all week to discover this heaven! The other bath house is new and the shower rooms are temperature controlled with NO fans blowing the cold air over your wet body. It was a heavenly experience. I said before, it’s the little things in ... read more

It turns out that we were really privileged to have seen the American White Pelican. They are the largest native bird to North America weighing from 11 to 20 lbs, it’s evident that they need a huge wing span to get that weight off the ground. The wing span, up to 120”, is second only to the California Condor. They can live up to 16 yrs in the wild. These birds summer in Alberta and North West Territories of Canada with their southern most range in southwest WY. Which is where I saw them in 2010. They winter in Panama and the Gulf Coast. Unlike the brown pelican the white swims to catch fish, does not dive. They live in fairly large colonies, sometimes using cooperative fishing techniques, sometimes fishing alone. As they flew by we ... read more

It’s Warmer I set the alarm to take a picture of sunrise but didn’t need it, I just woke up. I had 2 cameras standing by, didn’t even have to get out of bed. Since I had and early start I thought I’d try to do a load of wash. There is one washer and dryer for the whole campground so to find it not in use was wonderful. I put in one load just to have enough clean shirts to make it home. That required going back and forth several times. There was also a sink with hot water so I brought my dishes over while the washer finished and got clean dishes too. Then after my breakfast it was time for Oscar’s walk and also a lookout for wildlife. We toured the campground and ... read more

Treasure Hunting The sunrise was beautiful but I couldn’t make myself get out of bed to get the camera. Tomorrow I will set the alarm to make sure I capture it, it’s worth it. At 4 am I woke and looked out and there were stars all over the heavens. It was 43 degrees so I was not heading outside in those temps to star gaze, but decided if the weather warmed up at all I would make a point to see how the stars are here. Maybe later tonight. I watched the news as best I could as the signal kept fading in and out to find out about the snow storm up north but they never talked about it. Don’t know what happened. After a shower and breakfast Oscar and I headed out to ... read more

Take It Easy Day There was so much excitement yesterday that I thought I’d take it easy today. I didn’t get up til almost 8 and already it was 10 degrees warmer than it had been the morning before. The wind was coming from the south and decided to pick up again. It is too windy to fish, or sail or boat, most everything. So after a leisurely shower and breakfast Oscar and I set out on a walk. First we hit the beach, pictures, high surf and a straight out red flag, then we walked to the other campground by way of the boardwalk. No birds in the marshes. Then we looked on their beach and nothing was different. We headed back after a loop around the other campground and I decided since Oscar was ... read more

Apalachicola Day The sun was shining and the sky was cloudless but boy was it cold! The temp was 47 and there was a 35 mph wind from the northwest that had everybody snuggled in their camps. I took Oscar for a walk and had the hood up on my sweatshirt. We moved smartly. Since it was the middle of the week and not a beach day I decided to take a trip to St George Island. It too is a state park but has more stores and little shops so I thought that would be interesting. I packed the car with camera, tripod, water, dog dish and food, jackets and maps. We were off by 10:30 and made it as far as Apalachicola, when I decided that was enough travel and I went about finding ... read more

Oscar’s Birthday While having my wonderful coffee this morning I got on the internet and there was a Happy Birthday wish for Oscar for Margie. I never remember his birthday, thanks Marg! As a result I was a little kinder to him today. I took a nice long walk with him after it warmed up a bit and we found a bird heaven. We watched all the goings on for a short time and I just had to go home and get my good camera, telephoto lens, tri-pod and water. We got back to “our” spot and 3 other people were there so we had to share space. I would normally have left Oscar back at the camper but it was his birthday. He smelled around and finally just sat in the sun and listened to ... read more

Blog 03-03-13 Moving day. Interesting date.. I said good -bye to Kat this morning and reflected on all the fun times we have had over the last several weeks. We have spent 6 weeks together and it seems like just a few days, where does the time go! Our adventures have been many and she is a wonderful teacher for me about how to spend the winter in FL on a shoestring. I have learned so much from her and Ginny too about rving and the wide world out there to explore. So many thanks especially for sharing. This has been the first time that I spent 2 weeks at a time in one place and I did it twice. Thank God for the car. I did learn to settle in and relax and enjoy the ... read more
