Apalachicola Day
The sun was shining and the sky was cloudless but boy was it cold! The temp was 47 and there was a 35 mph wind from the northwest that had everybody snuggled in their camps.
I took Oscar for a walk and had the hood up on my sweatshirt. We moved smartly.
Since it was the middle of the week and not a beach day I decided to take a trip to St George Island. It too is a state park but has more stores and little shops so I thought that would be interesting. I packed the car with camera, tripod, water, dog dish and food, jackets and maps. We were off by 10:30 and made it as far as Apalachicola, when I decided that was enough travel and I went about finding stuff to do here. I stopped at a little park to take Oscar out and met a woman who moved here from AZ and told me all the things I just had to see while I was here. She was very interesting and informative so off I went the 2 blocks to the center of the activities.
It seems
that Apalachicola was the 3rd largest port in the Gulf of Mexico in the 1800’s. They shipped cotton, lumber, particularly Cyprus trees, oysters and sponges. The waterfront still has some of the old warehouses but they are now shops or fishing companies.
Oysters and fishing are the largest industries here now and the oysters account for 10% of the oysters consumed in the US today. Denise can attest to their quality!
There were about 40 shops, all different and interesting. No, I didn’t hit even close to all of them but did enough to get a feel for the place, took Oscar for a walk on the waterfront and headed for the grocery store. It seemed there was nothing in town I couldn’t live without but it was fun looking.
After stocking up on a few groceries I headed home. It was about 3 and I settled in my lounge chair in the sun with my book and read for a short time when Beckey (the woman I had met 2 days before) came by and asked if I wanted to take a walk with her. So I got Oscar and camera and off we went. On
the way back she showed me her trailer which is a 2007 Airstream. Wow was it nice inside and roomy with lots of light. The back window was a wrap around where their dining table was that overlooked the marsh. Really nice set-up.
When I came home it was time for dinner and a little rest before it was time for sunset. A body just can’t get any rest around here!
I put on 3 layers and brought a blanket to the beach for sunset and needed it all. The breeze, wind was from the north and sure had a bite to it. The waves were really kicked up and the breeze blew the mist backwards, really pretty.
We finally had a clear horizon for the sun to disappear into the sea but no green flash tonight. There was the usual small group that gathered and slowly and quietly they all disappeared after the main event. Pictures
Time to come back home and warm up and get ready for Survivor tonight. I get one network and it’s CBS, YES!
The weather promises to be nicer tomorrow, warmer temps and less wind. At least it’s not
snow!!
