We are having an extended stay in Key West and the weather has been great - upper 70's and lower 80's. We started out at the Key West Bight City Marina. It turned out that most of the race boats entered in the Key West World Championship Races were also staying at this marina. What a colorful group! They are the Nascar of the boating world. The boats are brightly painted, fast, and loud. They also come with flashy girls - literally. The boat across the dock from us was from Texas. The two girls on board wore cowboy hats, bikinis in Texas flag material, and crotchless leather chaps. What a sight. There were an abundance of girls in thongs too. Fortunately this group does not stay on their boats after they get tied up. They ... read more

After a terrible night sleep in the backseat of the van, which was so incredibly stinking hot, we woke ready for an awesome day out on the sea. We got into our bathers and headed down to the boat docks in Key West. Today we had a full day of water sports including jet skis, scuba diving, swimming, sailing, kayaking etc. We were joined with the other trek group at the pier and waited around for our boat. Suddenly a coconut fell from tree and hit the ground, it was lucky that no one was underneath it. As we continued to wait some guys from the other group smashed it open and we all shared fresh coconut, it was great. Finally we got the word, the sea trip, was cancelled. It was too windy to go ... read more

We got up and our room was a disgusting mess. We didn’t have too much recollection of what happened last night. We packed up our stuff and loaded the van when Jon arrived. He then mentioned how he woke up, naked on the bathroom floor somehow, we thought it was hilarious, he was in bed when we left last night. With our new mascot Candy in the front seat we made our way to Key West. To get to Key West we needed to cross a series of bridges which connected each island until you get to the furthest most town Key West. Seeing those bridges was an awesome sight, water either side of you and in front of you just constant bridges. We arrived at our campsite in the early afternoon and set up all ... read more

In May of 2007 i took a 3 week trip traveling from my North Carolina home to the Florida Keys and Keywest . This was the most beautiful drive along the coast ! The water is as blue as any i have ever seen. The marsh and sand bars that can be seen along the drive is outstanding ! This is a paradise for all types of water sports and seems to be in a world all it's own ! The sands are white and the sun bathing plenty ! May i highly suggest if doing any water activties that you check into a tour with one of the many water tour companies in the area . Shop around for the best price as each tour offers something different in the way of activities and meals ... read more

So I had a great day in Key West yday. I'm beginning to see why people like it so much. Its like Vegas in a Caribbean setting without the casinos. Its like San Francisco without the fog and lots more palm trees. Its like Memphis without...actually its not a bit like Memphis :) Life in Key West is a little surreal...and thats why I like it. If I'd written this blog at midnight yday night I'd have said, after two days in KW, the closest embrace I've had to a living being is with a female python - double ugh - just kidding :) (about both). Here's something I discovered, a python/boa's skin feels like a really expensive leather purse...really it does. And I'm not kidding about that. Because everything in KW is open till 4:00am ... read more

Hey guys .. Sorry for the long time since my last post - we've done a lot of travelling and havent managed to find time till now to update it.. Anyway heres a quick rundown of what I've been up to since New York. Met my fellow trekkers last sat morning - 6 guys and 6 girls - we've all got on pretty good so far which is good! First visit on the trek was Washington DC - here we checked out all the national memorials and I went and had coffee with Mr Bush in the WHite House! lol.. not really - duH! There was a lot of museums here which are all free which was good - I went to a holocaust museum and an air and space one which was cool. It was ... read more

As I’m sure you can imagine from my previous entry, we had to get up and get out this morning or we would have stayed on Little Palm forever. We were on the 9:00 boat, in the car by 9:30 and in Key West by 10:30. What a place. I had heard that it is the end of the line and - boy howdy - is it. I have never seen so many odd people in one place in my life. We checked into an absolutely gorgeous hotel - The Gardens. It is an old Key West home that was made famous in its day by the woman who owned it, one Peggy Mills. She devoted her life to her garden and it has been maintained to this day. Absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, we had our list ... read more

Day 1, Key West PierceLast Sunday I watched my parents drive my truck full of all my belongings down the street as I thought to myself "what the hell am I doing, what did I do? What did I just do?!" I was left with only my bike and the little bit of stuff that I had packed into my bike bags. I was more nervous now than ever before and I kept thinking to myself "what just happened here? what did I just do?" as I flew down south. I felt a little better while on layover in Ft. Lauderdale seeing all the palm trees and all the beautiful beach going people, myself included of course. When I finally boarded the tiny plane to Key West I felt great, even the pilot was a beautiful ... read more

Untitled Pierce Tomorrow I will get up early one last time, I will drive the ten miles through Fayetteville, North Carolina to Fort Bragg one last time, I will go to the chow hall for two dollar breakfast one last time, and I will walk through the post out-processing station one last time. Tomorrow is the last day I will be an active duty US Army artillery officer. The last four years has been difficult, complicated, stressful, exhausting, depressing, exciting, adventurous, inspirational, fun, awesome, and a whole lot of words that I would rather not mention. I don't think I would have wanted it any other way. I have learned a lot about the world and myself, met a lot of great people and will always cherish these experiences, good and bad, and will never forget ... read more
