Key West, April 29 - May 1, 2012
Published: May 15th 2012North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestI must admit that on the drive to Key West from Miami, I was a bit nervous. It was raining really hard and the forecast was calling for lots more. Having never driven the Overseas Highway before, I was worried it might get flooded and we'd get stuck. I also wasn't too thrilled by the prospect of spending two rainy days in Key West. I called our hotel and tried to change our reservations, but we couldn't and they said it was still sunny down there, so we went. The rain got a bit lighter the further south we went, and eventually stopped altogether. We stayed at the Doubletree Grand Key Resort. While a bit far from all the fun of Duval Street, there were free hourly shuttles downtown. Immediately upon arriving, we got on the ... read more
PhotoBike Tour 14: KEY WEST !!
Published: March 30th 2012North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestPhotoBike Tour 14: Key West Welcome to Key West! We spent a couple of days here with friends this past week, driving down Sunday with two and driving back up Wednesday with two others. It’s good that everyone drives! Bill was generous in offering to drag my bicycle down so that I could roam at will, and roam I did. We also did a lot of walking. Kirk took most of the foliage pictures; click on any of these to make them larger. Here’s my bike– the one with the white basket– fairly jumping off the rack to get started… img=http://ji... read more
Sunny Sunday Morning in Key West
Published: March 25th 2012North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestGood Morning all – Just thought I’d write this (it may be my last missive) whilst we have all been confined to cabins because the ship’s on fire!!!!!! Always best to keep a sense of humour although I have registered my disappointment as the band is not playing! Joking apart we are instructed to stay in the cabins whilst a fire in an incinerator on deck 3 is being dealt with and all crew have their life jackets and special hats on and are standing at their muster stations. I was in the middle of playing bridge so a bit inconvenient!!! Just listening to the captain now who says fire is contained but we must still stay in our cabin. We left New Orleans last night after a really enjoyable couple of days – it’s a ... read more

Key West – Day 13
Published: March 15th 2012North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestKey West - Tuesday – March 13th Wow! Another busy day in Florida!! We had a good tour, but it was a very loooooong day. But we are glad to have seen Key West. The day started by us leaving our hotel at 5:45 AM to go to the pickup point and we got back to our room at 10:00 PM. That is why we did not publish anything yesterday. Now we are trying to catch up (being a day behind). We had previously found the hotel where we needed to meet the tour and we had found a 24-hr McDonalds for a drive-thru breakfast. We grabbed breakfast sandwiches (the hotel breakfast did not start until 6:30) and went to the Hilton for our pickup. We actually got there about 20 ... read more
Cruise! Key West (via Carnival Fascination sailing January 16th 2012)
Published: January 24th 2012North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestThis blog entry is specific to Key West. My ship entry is here: http://www.travelblog.org/Oceans-and-Seas/Atlantic/blog-681988.htmland Nassau is here: http://www.travelblog.org/Central-America-Caribbean/Bahamas/Nassau/blog-681996.html. Wednesday we were up bright and early - we had arrived to key West! We got off the boat to explore for a little bit before our 9:30AM hop excursion meetup time. ( Early, I know, but we had to be back on the boat by 2:30PM for departure.) We wandered around to Mallory square and took pictures of the ship. We saw how everything centers around Duval Street and also marvelled at the chickens and roosters that were everywhere. By 10AM we were on our way to our first stop on the bar hop, with stickers identifying us at th... read more
The fam and I usually do a January getaway every year. We really don't have a choice as Tennessee is completely gray for most of December through March. (Howevs, this year we didn't get below freezing til just this week I think... so it was actually about the same temperature back home as it was in Key West, especially since Key West was going through a SEVERE WINTER BLAST. It was like 45F, chill out Floridians, that is NOT cold LOL) ANYWAY, we left for the airport at 6:00am on New Year's Day. Never gonna do that again. Hungover/still kind of drunk from NYE, barely 2 hours of sleep, and food poisoning. It was not a fun day for travel, but when it only takes 4 hours to get to the beach, I really can't complain. ... read more
Key West Drifted
Published: September 13th 2011North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestWaking up after a long week and craving a getaway, a decision was randomly made...Key West baby! Escaping Miami's crazy tourists for just plain craziness. We piled in a car with what looked like enough bags for a cross-Atlantic move, drank our coffee, and cranked the music. It was the start of a weekend getaway only three hours south of Miami, but mentally a first class flight. As we arrive to the Key we search the address for our hotel, Casa 325. According to the site, it sits on the main strip of Duval Street, but lays "nestled" away. Nestled indeed...it took us three rounds around the block to finally notice a narrow cobblestone path leading to our little cove. Note that at 11 am we were not all with the program just yet. As we ... read more

Published: July 22nd 2011North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestGilles Labruyere sent another nice cartoon - it summarizes my trip completely accurate: icebergs are everywhere. But here in Key West, they melt faster. I plotted in the meantime my trip so far, and we are by far on the most Southern point here (24'33"), and DDN is closer to the equator than ever. And the most Northern point so far was Ilulissat (69'14"N), so we have changed latitude quite a bit. Today we start heading back North, Regina finds it too hot here. But apparently, Key West is one of the colder spots in the US at the moment, a heat wave seems to be in the mid-west. We'll see... ... read more
Orlando to Key West
Published: July 22nd 2011North America » United States » Florida » Keys » Key WestNow DDN had its well deserved rest of four days, while Regina and I enjoyed our stay with Steve & Marga: one day the Cocoa Beach, then Manatees and alligators in the wilderness of the Blue Springs of the St Johns river. Next day we went with Bob and Glenys to the Fantasy of Flight airplane collection - many beautiful and rare airplanes in an exhibit in Polk city near Orlando. A great airplane museum, although the founder Kermit Weeks sees it more as an entertainment park. And yesterday we went with Marga to the Morse Museum in Winterpark, which has the largest collection of Tiffany art. Each of these events was a nice vacation in itself, and we enjoyed our stay very much. Steve & Marga, Bob & Glenys, please visit us in Leiden when ... read more
