The title is a misnomer, there are not 10 things to do on a wet day in Clearwater, let alone 101 but we tried. Unbeknown to me, a meeting of the travel committee had taken place in Starbucks at 7-30am and decided the howling gales and leftover hurricane outside the window was too much for a day at Busch gardens so everyone returned to their beds. When I woke up at 9-30 having missed the 8-00 alarm (which had been turned off) I panicked expecting everyone had left without me only to be reassured by a snoring lump under the duvet next to me who mumbled something about the trip being cancelled. By the time the curtains were thrown back, the wind and rain had subsided and it had turned into a quite nice but very ... read more

Up early to hit the beach only to find the remnants of the hurricane that recently hit Mexico streaking across the sky. Whilst we did try and sit by the pool for a while, the rain became torrential/tropical storm like and whilst once again one of us took shelter in the beach bar, the other tried to sit it out under a sunbed...until it got so strong she couldn't even leave and stayed buried under a mountain of towels until it subsided. We had lunch in the pool bar and I decided I was going to escape for the afternoon to baseball but kept getting told I couldn't as we had a 'surprise' planned. Despite protestations I wasn't allowed to leave and went off for a cigarette downstairs. When we got downstairs, the surprise became clear ... read more

Short blog today as absolutely nothing was going to happen after two weeks on the move. With the Mustang safely locked in its underground palace and the weather looking a bit cloudy, we hit the pool for a few hours in the sun. Sadly very quickly more clouds moved in followed by the rain and whilst one of us retreated to the comfort of the bar, the other insisted on sitting it out under the umbrella in the forlorn hope that the sun would return. When it didn't we decided to abandon the pool for a while and head for the Sandpearls luxury Sunday brunch. With a great buffet of breakfast items, sushi, prawns, crab, omelettes, waffles, pancakes, steaks, chicken and fish dishes as well it was a real feast and throw in free champagne and ... read more

January 24, 2013 We left home a few days early for our Western Caribbean Cruise aboard the Norwegian Pearl, so we could revisit Clearwater Beach. Every year during Spring Break when the boys were growing up we would drive to Florida, and more often than not, spend at least one day relaxing on the beautiful white sand of Clearwater Beach. It had been a number of years since we had been there, so decided a reunion visit was due. Since we were not there at Spring Break this year, we did not have to contend with the crowd, traffic, and parking. I don’t remember the round-a-bout, but otherwise, the area seemed familiar. (Sorry to the city planners, if a lot more had been done that I didn’t see.) We parked at the parking lot at Pier ... read more

As promised, a few more pixs of our Crossing and arrival at Caladesi State Park. Although we're expecting yucky weather, we still love this barrier island park. We will probably stay put until the rain and wind passes. So, we now have several days to really lay low, read, watch TV, think, plot and plan. Not bad........ read more

A friend from work and I both had to use up our “Good Friday” floating holiday before it expired, so we decided that kayaking would be a good use of the day. We had initially talked about kayaking around Honeymoon Island (since its right down the street from my house); however, we decided to go to Weeden Island Preserve instead. I had kayaked Weeden Island once before using a “less than ideal kayak” that took Janet and myself 4 hours to complete - and we were paddling hard! The kayak we used the first time was my friend Jim’s “beach comer” tandem kayak that looked like a pontoon boat. This thing was 3 feet wide and one could easily stand up in it while in the water with no fear of tipping. It was literally like ... read more

We ended our trip in Clearwater where we had started. Due to the ever increasing number of our (copious) extended family members that are spending the winter in this neck of the woods, I’ve found myself in the area a ton of times and have managed to do some great things around the gulf coast. These are some of my favourites from past visits: · Snorkelling with manatees at Crystal River - A million good reasons to go: you can pet a manatee, the water is warm and super clear (despite the odd manatee turd that may drift by) and everyone looks good in a wetsuit (strutting permitted). · Fort Desoto Beach – I’m not normally a beach person (on account of I don’t like the sun to touch my skin), but this one is breathtaking. ... read more

At 11.50 on Friday morning, we left Carrabelle on a bright sunny day and very calm seas. We then witnessed a beautiful sunset , after the darkness settled in and the visibility was unlimited with the sky filled with stars and planes flying over. We could not have asked for anything ... read more
