Today we slept a little late and had breakfast. We were going to try to see the area but the big problem was the closure of the National Forests in California. Many of the sites in Mammoth Lake lie within the Inyo National Forest. Because of the closure there was no hunting, fishing, hiking, or site seeing allowed. Of all the lakes in the area there were only 2 we could visit. We spent the day fishing, which means Terry and Ed gushed and Karen and I waited for them and worked on our trip blogs and pictures. As usual Karen packed a picnic lunch which was always appreciated. We also toured the town and shopped for souvenirs. Here you must mask up before entering any business. Many places were closed or had reduced hours, like ... read more

Today our goal was to drive clear through Yosemite to get to Mammoth lakes on the east side. We loaded the car, stopped at Tunnel View for one last look, and head east across Yosemite. I wondered if many people actually visited the east side of the park. It seemed that most of the sites to visit and most of the traffic was located in and around Yosemite Valley or the several lodges in the center of the park. I am so glad we took the drive clear through the park. The landscape is so different from the west side to the east. There were more fields and hillsides with rock much like the eastern panhandle of WV. The drive was beautiful. At one point Karen and I cracked up. We noticed we were looking from ... read more

Wow what a good day we've had today. Off nice and early in Ellie to climb up to Main Lodge, which is where the scenic gondola ride commenced. In summer this gondola ride takes many hikers and bikers to the top of Mammoth mountain at 11,000 feet. The bike trails leading down are graded, but they all looked pretty scary. All the bikers wore full protection gear many looking a little like Darth Vada. We were less ambitious and just walked around to the various viewing spots. From these there were lovely views off all the nearby mountains, some of which were still covered in snow. It was amazing to think that the previous day we had been below sea level and now we were 11,000ft above. Next it was off to Reds Meadow Valley the ... read more

So today was our longest distance drive of the whole trip from Furnace Creek to Mammoth Lakes a total of 204 miles. However before that adventure could begin we had to experience our first 'dump'. As our next campsite would not have individual dumps ,we had been advised to do this before leaving. So it was out with the black hose,on with the gloves and after pulling two levers and rinsing said hose out we were all empty and ready to go. Ours had a leak and we appear to have a rubber seal missing - will have to look for one at our next campsite shop. After that excitement our first stop was to refill with petrol, another minefield as you have to pay for how much you want then put the fuel in. If ... read more

Day 13 The second week of any holiday always goes so much faster than the first and this is no exception. The realisation we are going home in a few days has hit and the depression has already sunk in! We check out of the hotel and sit by the pool for a while before we make our way to our next hotel in Mammoth Lakes. Our holidays for basically the last 10 years have been road trip holidays and we never stay in the same place too long as we get bored! And as I am sitting relaxing at the pool for a few hours I realise why! I get bored very easily. The climate is nice and the pool is empty. I dangle my feet in the pool and enjoy my book before pestering ... read more

Geo: 37.6486, -118.971In the morning we went to see the Devil's Post Pile near Mammoth Lakes. These unusually shaped rock fingers resulted from cooling lava, millions of years ago. We went over a pass at 9,200 ft and down to the post pile at an elevation of over 8,000 ft. It was 36 deg F when we got there at 9:30am, but a brisk walk at that elevation soon got the heart pumping. Then drove into Yosemite Park through the Tioga Pass eastern entrance. We had a very pretty 90min drive to the village area and booked a tour for tomorrow, had a look around and a drink at The Ahwahnee. It was another poor winter for snowfall and even the perennial Bridalveil Falls had almost no flow.We stayed outside the Park near the small town of ... read more

After a snatched breakfast in the motel we were on the road again and the temperature was rising rapidly to begin with. Our first stop was Mammoth Lakes, again as we got to the mountain area there was snow everywhere but this time whenever we left the car to take photos the air temperature was low as we had climbed to a high altitude, over 8000 feet so no surprise, the scenery was incredible though so we figured it was worth braving the cold to see! From Mammoth Lakes we travelled further North to Mono Lake, a strange lake with evidence of volcanic activity. The water was a bright turquoise blue with a black crater in the middle and strange pinnacles around the edge formed by spring water bubbling up creating calcium deposits. Thankfully here, despite ... read more

Winter is upon us in Russell, the sky is grey and rain is on the horizon; Caroline and I are due to make a trip to the US on August 15. Unfortunately, there's a family emergency and I'm required to travel to the United Kingdom in early August. Of course, this requires re-routing tickets. I re-connect with Caroline on August 21 in Mammoth Lakes, California. All is not as simple as written, my flight from the UK includes an overnight stop in Phoenix, and when I finally do arrive in LA, I spend 8 hours dead-time in LA airport. I am phone-less and even though I try using courtesy hotel phones, I can't arrange a day room. My flight to Mammoth Lakes, scheduled for 4.00pm finally takes off at 5.15pm and I am met by Caroline ... read more

Upon waking we all had the same thought in our minds..."Lets go home"! After all we were just six hours and a familiar drive away from being home. We also longed to sleep in our beds at home. We figured we could leave by 5:00 and be home by midnight. But first we wanted to go to the "Kids Fishing Festival". It was free and the Department of Fish and Game had stocked two ponds with big ol' trout! So, off we went with the rest of Mammoth's visitors...hundreds of them! And their kids that have never fished before...all packed into two tiny ponds. Fortunately our kids have fished before and it was pretty easy for them to literally drop their bait in and reel in a fish. Once we returned to the campground, Jeff went ... read more

Being in our old stomping grounds gave us familiarity and an even more longing to be home in Temecula. Rex began to talk about leaving and it was definitely on Jeff's and my minds. But, we had one goal while in Mammoth...TO CATCH FISH (and eat Ice Cream from Mono Cone)! So, out the door we went with fishing poles, bait, and Roxy to Little Virginia Lake north of Mono Lake to our favorite fishing spot. Apparently, it is a LOT of people's favorite spot today as there were tons of people on boats & rafts on the lake and a lot of the shore space was filled up too. But not our favorite spot I guess because its a little hike over rocks and such...but it was not a problem for us just tenderfoot Roxy ... read more
