Yes, avid readers, the rumours are true and June has unfortunately closed! Management decided that we were 'unable to provide an adequate customer experience' due to the lack of snow and when we rocked up to work on Sunday (28th)we were informed that it was our last day. This came as a suprise to everyone (except management) and pissed off a lot of people, needless to say being a lifty we copped the full brunt of peoples annoyance on the day. It wasnt totally bad news for us as we were thinking about coming home at the start of March anyway and this just made it official, Shane (our manager) offered to hook us up with some jobs over at Mammoth but we politely declined and it now looks as though we will be back on ... read more

DAY OF DAYS! Well Australia day, what a day over here. Many a rowdy aussie to be seen and heard! We started off with a crawl around the various lodges of Mammoth then had a respite before heading to one of the bars in the village which was packed full of Aussies, great stuff! There was many an "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - oi, oi, oi" to be heard and lots of fosters (what a crappy beer) and fish and chips around. Our boss had kindly given us both the Friday and Saturday off so there were no holds barred on our part. Enjoy pics and will post further hopefully tomorrow... read more

Mammoth Ski Trip 2007 http://www.mammothmountain.com/ So to start off 2007, a few friends and I had planned on going up to the mountains to ski. In Los Angeles, you have 2 choices, Big Bear or Mammoth. In our minds, Mammoth will always be the winner with that choice, as they have more snow, bigger runs, and a nicer village area. So Gadow, Traci, Tracy, Kasey, Mindi, Youxi and I, all left Friday afternoon to get up there and start the festivities. After a vigorous workout of beers and Wii tennis, (video at the top) we went to sleep with only 6 hours til we needed to get up. Probably not the best idea, but we managed to do ok. On Saturday, even with our soreness from Wii Sports, we got up and hit the mountain. ... read more

Well things are still going well over here, work is still fun and is getting better as we all get to know each other. The weather is still troubling though, it was FREEEEZING at the start of the week, one day it never rose above around -12c and it was sunny the whole day, in the morning it was around -30c with no wind chill! Pretty much if we left our water/anything liquid outside for long it froze. Needless to say we spent most of the day huddled in the warmish huts at the top and bottom of the lifts. Now though it is unseasonly warm again and there doesnt appear to be any snow on the way which could become a problem as all our existing snow may melt away, which could once again leave ... read more

Wuddup all! :) Hope things are well over there in warm ol' Aus, temps are really starting to drop over here! At one stage last night on June it was around -20 celsius or something ridiculous like that, needless to say it wasnt the best day to miss the bus but Nathan and I decided that we would do it the hard way as usual and wait around in the cold for a lift. We've had a few early starts of late, 6:30am (5:20 get up :) starts both today and tomorrow, but its actually not too bad as we get a lift in a warm car and dont need to wait for the bus to rock up in the cold! We have a pretty busy weekend coming up as its Martin Luther King day on ... read more

Well once again nothing major has been happening, more work but June is at last open! Just in time as well as I and especially Nath were both getting a bit sick of working at Mammoth, although not a bad place to work we were kind of just pushed around and werent given a whole lot of recognition or respect. June though is a lot better place to work, our supervisors are all extremely nice and respectful and the whole mountain is just way more relaxed, which is to be expected as it is a much smaller resort. The set up is a lot better as well, the lift crew room is nicer and we have our own lockers to keep our ski gear + jackets in which helps. The shacks at the top of the ... read more

It’s as though someone is chiseling at your chest. After the work, the strain, the arduous momentum to bring yourself to the present moment of your journey—of all things!—now this: You’re strapped down, inclined by force, and your eyelids are wrenched open in an undefined spaciousness. Someone, something, is chiseling at you. It’s strikes your rib cage, prying towards your heart. It’s searching for something more, and as it pounds, the sensation is everything but painful. In fact, what holds you down and stretches the eyelids is your own volition. That someone, that thing, digging into you at the cavity of your torso is of your own manifestation. You allow it. You create it. You smile with inexplicable delight. Come the Hammer & Pick Inspiration: we flourish with it. It is an imaginary force of mental ... read more

I know, I know its been awhile! We havent had much to write about, still waiting on a decent dump (its snowing at the moment so fingers crossed) for June to open so we've pretty much just been skiing! Other than the skiing we had 3 hours of training in the ticket sales system as there was a chance we could pick up a few hours but it turns out they don't need us now, the 3 hours pay was still nice though :) We also have been recruited by the Mammoth lift crew as they are running a bit short, we got all fitted out in our uniforms this morning and will be heading back there tomorrow for some actual work, although hopefully we will get enough snow tonight for June to open. Otherwise we've ... read more

Well after arriving in Mammoth on Monday then spending Tuesday getting acquainted with the mountain (skiing wise), Wednesday was our first day of work at June Mountain (www.junemountain.com). The mountain is about 20 miles from Mammoth Lakes and takes about 35 minutes on the bus which arrives at our stop at 7:15am (ouch!). June is a really nice little resort that attracts mostly locals and hardcore skiers/boarders, and it has one of the best freestyle parks (Jumps, halfpipe, rails etc) in the US. The ride up to the main building is a 10 minute lift ride that gives us some spectacular views of the surrunding mountains, it feels like we are in the heart of the European Alps rather than California! Our first 2 days of work were pretty much all theory, our supervisor lecturing us ... read more

Had our first big dump on saturday with over a foot of fresh powder, which is good news for mammoth and getting us closer to starting work at June mountain (we still need another 1-2 feet). So we headed out on sunday morning and we're doing the normal runs through the park and near the main lodge when we decide to take a few chairs up in pursuit of some powder runs. Got off the final chair and we're loving the run so far and come to a crossroad... everyone is going right, but left looks deeeeep in powder, although no one is running it (looked kinda closed off but no signs were up). It may or may not have been my decision, we took a left and sunk into waist deep powder with not much ... read more
