My first idea was to simply not do any blog about the Grand Canyon, and to put the pictures in my next blog. There are two reasons for this blog. First...what is coming next worth an entry by itself, without the need of average pictures from the Grand Canyon in the same blog. Second, was my feeling...and the one of Leslie and Tiffany while visiting the area next to the Grand Canyon Village on the 3rd of January. But first, let's come back few years back...summer of 2004... You don't come to the States "just" for the Grand Canyon. Most people will actually visit on a day trip either from Las Vegas or the Phoenix area. For me I splurged a little back in summer 2004...flying over it...than having an helicopter flight over it followed by ... read more

My words will never do nature justice, so I won't waste your time describing the falls. The pictures say it all (and even then it's still not the same). BUT, I will tell you about the most terrifying thing I believe I've ever done. The Havasupai area has a variety of falls. There's the first set you see, which are the new falls because a flood rearranged things a few years ago. There's Havasupai falls, my favorite because it's the easiest to swim around. There's also a cave you can climb to, but I already scraped up my knees at Mooney Falls so didn't venture up that rock wall. There's Beaver Falls, which I didn't even know about and heard about later, which is a challenging hike from Mooney Falls (will do that one the next ... read more

For those of you who've driven through Grand Canyon National Park but never have made it below the rim, you have not truly experienced the awe of it all. I know this because I've been all over the top of the rim many, many times --- and, yes, it's spectacular, but oh my the wonder of the canyon bottom is so unbelievably the mother of all experiences. There are several trails down. The one we took isn't as steep as Kaibab or Bright Angel trail. Let me rephrase that, it IS steep, but its switchbacks felt easier to handle. It begins at the top of a crowded parking lot called Hilltop. It's a little intimidating at first because you look down and think, "can I just sit and slide down that bitch?" But, going down (as ... read more

We have just come back from our sunset photo session of the Grand Canyon. The temperature remains where it has been, barely above zero, all day. The snow and rain has gone but it remains cloudy with occassional clear patches. All the photos in this blog entry were taken during the sunset, a fantastic time of day to be photographing. Enroute to the lookouts on the South Rim of the canyon we saw a large group of deer. And later on when we visited the Grand Canyon village we saw deer walking along the railway tracks and young ones grazing on the grass nearby. Tonight we had dinner at Sophie's Mexican Kitchen at the village of Tusayan just down the road from where we are staying. The food was amazing and the service was fast and ... read more

After a fantastic dinner at the hotel's restaurant we settled in for the night and a great nights sleep. It rained a fair bit of the night and at times heavy enough to wake us up. After a hearty buffet breakfast Vicki and I drove up to the visitors centre. the first thing we noticed was how bloody cold it is outside. It was barely above zero and drizzling with rain. While at the visitors centre we were greeted with a very excited announcement from the rangers "we are having the first snow of the season". As Vicki had never seen snow before we neaded outside for a walk back to the car and it was bucketing down snow. It was now time to find out what this Grand Canyon thing is all about. Wow! What ... read more

My toenails are cut and swiped free of any polish (they hate being naked by the way), calluses are built up and expensive socks are packed in backpack AND duffle bag. My feet, calves, thighs, and, hopefully, knees are ready for the trek down the canyon and then, a few days later, back up (I once walked Bright Angel trail with a friend. We only did 1/2 the trail, and I was ready to sell my soul to the devil just so I wouldn't have to climb back up. This one is the full deal, heaven help us all). I've been training since I came back from Ireland, which hasn't been easy. You see in Ireland, as a tourist, it was easy to get soft around the edges --- a whole lot of deep-fried food and ... read more

We had a very interesting and another fantastic day. If you saw my earlier post from LAX the problem I had at security was the passport carrier I wear around my neck wasn't removed prior to screening so I got frisked and had it searched. No big drama but a bit confronting at the time. Flight with Delta to Las Vegas was very smooth but much like a local route bus, but then again what do you need in a 40 minute flight? Bit of a queue at the Budget counter at Las Vegas but we were well looked after. We have been driving a brand new Hyundai Genesis, which is in our fleet as a luxury car. Leather upholstery and all the bells and whistles similar in size to a Statesman. We went to the ... read more

Today we are back into the old routine with a 08:00 start. We are going to the Grand Canyon. We take the coach to Williams; which is about a 45-minute drive, some of it along the famous “Route 66”. We arrive at Williams and go to a Cowboy shoot-out between the “Cataract Creek Gang and the Marshall, with a bit of audience participation. (This group of cowboys will show-up again later in the day!) The train journey from Williams to the Grand Canyon South Rim takes about 2-1/4 hours. The scenery through the window of the train is not too interesting. There is some entertainment on the train – Clarence Clearwater; a Native American Indian sings us some old Indian songs. We arrive at 11:45. The first sight of the Grand Canyon is truly awesome; it ... read more

Hi troops, Today was another day spent at the Grand Canyon. Jan decided to hike down and went as far as you are advised on a one day hike. He descended more than half a mile and then had to ascend back to where he started from. Too much work for Bill Patricia and I so we decided to feed the cat another goldfish and opted for the view from a helicopter. It was a great experience and our pilot really knew her stuff! We dined at a route 66 themed diner called The Grand Canyon Brewing Co and it left the designer steakhouse from last night for dead. I should have known better than to eat in a place with a menu shaped like a cow. Big day tomorrow, we are driving over 500 miles ... read more
