Today was our first rest day. We packed up and headed off before anyone turned up at the office so accommodation last night was free. Our destination today was the Grand Canyon. We had to drive about 200kms to get there but was it worth it!It's hard to put into words the scale of what you are looking at. It even takes you eyes time to adjust to the images you are seeing. From south rim to north rim of the canyon is 10 miles and it's a mile deep. And all of this was created by the Colorado River. The visitor centres were great and provided heaps of information on how the canyon was formed. For instance snow melt that would fall into cracks during the day and then refreeze overnight would help slit the ... read more

I guess the Grand Canyon is so well known, published about, photographed and so forth, that I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I took my first peek over and from the south rim of the Canyon itself to find that on this occasion, my expectations were fulfilled, and neither exceeded nor disappointed. Yes, I know, I am a very difficult customer to please. Don't get me wrong, it is spectacular, overwhelming almost in its vastness, and certainly a feast for the eyes. I think I just expected it to be bigger and grander than everything I had hitherto been led to believe it would be. It was a one day drive from the campground we stayed in the night after we left Death Valley. That drive took us through Las Vegas itself ... read more

Op ... read more

Connie's Darlings By all accounts Connie Darling was a character out of a Carlos Castaneda book—warrior, shaman, maybe part con man. He "downloaded" Six Animal Kung Fu from ancient masters encountered in his dreams, then passed this knowledge on to his group of young disciples, including my sifu, Steven. Connie died five years ago, leaving his followers scattered and leaderless. The annual Grand Canyon trip was a regular feature of Connie's teaching. This year Sifu Steven decided to revive the tradition and reconvene the tribe. There were 16 of us— five post-Connie students, and the rest veteran members of the Darling Tribe. We met at 4 AM at the top of Havasu Canyon, a branch of the Grand Canyon that has been occupied by the Havasupai people for the last 800 years. We loaded our supplies ... read more

Reception was poor at Lake Powell so here is a few days of catch up on where we are and what we have been up to: Forecast: rain all day, good day for a drive up to Canyon Lands National Park, Island in the Sky. The 30 mile drive there we were surrounded by canyons and the road took a winding and elevated approach. We saw a few cows and their calves along the way on the open ranges that seem to appear everywhere out here. Again the photographs cannot bring to the imagination how vast the land thousands of feet below appears to be when you are confronted with it standing on the ledge at the top looking down. I don’t mind heights but there were a couple of spots as I stood out there ... read more

We used Las Vegas as our base for a trip to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. It is possible to visit both these places independently by car but it's easier by coach, so an organised trip it was for us – plus, knowing that, we’d already given the car back! There’s plenty of choice in terms of which part of the Canyon to visit but Steve fancied the Skywalk (me, not so much but maybe my brave gene would kick in when we got there) so the West Rim it was for us, via the Hoover Dam. It was also much closer than the South Rim and we didn’t fancy the 18 hour day trip that the woman from Redcar had endured going to the South Rim, often driving in the dark along the ... read more

Grand Canyon, I think its one of the most visited national park after the smoky mountains. For me this was one of the place I always wanted to visit since the day one I came to USA. Finally I got chance to visit the place in the month of September. Yes you are right the climate was hot but not as much as the summer months. Actually it was the extended trip from Las Vegas where we visited first before grand canyon. From Vegas you can do a day trip to the grand canyon and that's what most of the people prefer. We also planned similarly but the difference was instead of returning back to Vegas we continued further ahead to the Phoenix city. Grand canyon can be traveled from four directions east, west, south and ... read more

I love watching sunset. I stand there at the right place @ Grand Canyon - When the Sun appears progressively lower and lower on the horizon, I could feel how prettier and prettier it is. I was marvel at the scenic sight how the sun remains the same size and it dropping at a constant rate. I am from Physics background, for sometime became a scientist and enjoyed the concept behind it. The feelings stayed in heart and will remain forever. The day was perfect to enjoy. Day 1: The journey started on Friday afternoon from Albuquerque, NM. Found an interesting city on the way Gallup, it rains most of the time there. It was raining so heavily, I can hardly see the road. If you are traveling, thats expected. I was instructed by my friend ... read more

Well, we couldn't go on a southern road trip without hitting the Grand Canyon, could we? We got a late start, enjoying the rest day, since drive days we usually get moving early. Serena and I went to the lodge for breakfast while Laura and Amit slept in a bit, then we all got ready to move out towards the Grand Canyon. It's about an hour drive to the North Rim from where we're staying, so we got in sometime in the late morning. We had three trails planned to hike. Originally, we were going to do a quick trip to the Grand Canyon and then another one of the several beautiful parks near us, but (luckily) the others talked me into just the canyon. We started at Bright Angel, which is the point where most ... read more
