This is where it all really begins. Although Vegas was fun, road tripping is really about the days of driving. We had several stops today, and saw some amazing things. We started by going southwest to the Hoover Dam. It wasn't on our original plans, but we had time, so why not take a peek while we're around? It did seem a little overrated in my opinion. Sure, it's a tall dam, but what else? Maybe it would have been better if we'd hit the visitor's center, but we didn't. Not that it wasn't cool to see, of course! There's Lake Mead on the one side, the Colorado on the other, and a stupidly tall and thick dam between (that we got to drive over). After that, we drove north en route to the Grand Canyon. ... read more

The Grand Canyon Leaving Las Vegas this morning was really hard. Not because of a deep attachment to the city but because I was slightly hungover and very tired after last night. The front desk called me at 8:50 to remind me that I was due to check out at 10am. I hadn't packed and after accidentally falling asleep after the phone call I had 5 minutes to get dressed and get out! The 6 lane each way roads were surprisingly empty at 10am and getting out of the city was much easier than finding out hotel on the way in. I stopped for fuel and headed south and east towards Arizona. I didn't know I was going to pass Hoover Dam but when I saw the signs I thought that I had to stop just ... read more

Waking up to a clear sky meant only one thing - our trip to the Grand Canyon would be going ahead. It seems that fate played a hand yesterday as after we returned to the hotel after our disappointing start, I realised my camera battery was flat and I would have had to rely on my phone camera. (Lucky escape!) We were soon checked in at Sundance Helicopter Tours and met our pilot Randel ( I refrained from any Monsters Inc jokes due to him reminding me of Channing Tatum!) Strapped in with our headsets on, we took off to the Top Gun theme song (I know my brother would appreciate that as much as I did). We were soon in the air and out of Vegas heading towards Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. Lake ... read more

2nd June We retrieved our car from the valet, as he pulled up, all the doors and boot opened, almost in unison we said how did you do that - having left the car rental place with no instructions, we discovered we had buttons for everything on this car! Pete was in the driving seat, can't get it in gear he says to Col, switch on says Col, won't switch on says Pete, it's automatic says Col, put your foot on the brake as Col says to a group of men beside the car watching us that Pete passed his test the day before. We shot off, with Col shouting I believe in God!! We set off for Hoover Dam with a stop for an excellent and far less expensive breakfast, the prices of everything in ... read more

Today was an early start with a 6:05 am bus pickup to take us on a Grand Canyon Tour. A smaller bus arrived to take us to the depot which was running like a well oiled machine. And we were quickly on our way. It is a 4 hour trip out to the South Rim but our drive Roderick was entertaining and he played recordings of the history of the Canyon and a movie for us to watch. We had a lunch stop at the National Geographic Centre which was included but the food was ordinary, as expected. There is an iMax theatre here showing a movie of the Grand Canyon History. It was well done and gave us an idea of what the base of the canyon along the river was like without climbing down ... read more

This would not be my best idea of the trip. Driving to the Grand Canyon with limited sleep into a snow storm. I had actually been warned off by various people back home but I decided it was worth the risk. I left the hostel at 5AM. It was a nice hostel but not overly friendly and I do prefer hostels have a friendly atmosphere. I drove on the same route that the bus took yesterday. There was a storm coming in later that day but it was not expected to hit until early afternoon and I was hoping to reach the Grand Canyon and get out before the storm hit. 4 hours later I reached the Grand Canyon at 10AM (Time zone change). There are surprising number of hotels, motels and other accommodations right next ... read more

Day 9 Time to check out and head to hotel number 5! Another long drive (5 hours) to the Grand Canyon. We stop for a rest and coffee in Kingsman, Arizona. There are a few shops and Safeways has a Starbucks, although there is little else I can see to do! Also pass through Boulder City on this route which is cool! Temperature drops quite a bit once we leave Nevada and cross into Arizona. There are not a lot of hotels within close proximity of the Grand Canyon. We stayed in the Best Western. It was quite cramped for all our luggage but good location close to the National Park. Fee into the park is $25 for the car and $12 per person! Our hotel ran a free shuttle to the Canyon. The South Rim ... read more

Day 10 Breakfast was provided in the hotel but I personally did not find it at all appetising. The hotel was very busy with Grand Canyon tourists and helicopters continually passed overhead. It isn't a warm day, just nice and we take our time around the park. We stop at the entrance where the 'Grand Canyon National Park' sign is and take a few pictures and spot some deer nearby. We park at Mather Point and head towards the Visitor Centre. The biking shop is extremely bus all day with many choosing this way to see around the rim. The shuttle buses and maps help you plan your day and points you most want to see. Personally I felt that one full day was long enough to see what we wanted to. The bus route we ... read more

This morning was another early start as we were on the road by 7am. We kept napping in the bus and headed to the Grand Canyon. The canyon itself is amazing. It looks like a picture which you could reach out and touch. We got a lot of photos which hopefully will tell the story. We were due to do a helicopter trip over today but on what appeared to be a clear day there was one thick cloud which prevented us from going. We are returning tomorrow morning with hopefully better weather. We headed to our accomodation where we had a group dinner at Thai. Outside it is minus 13 degrees with the snow from the snow storm on NYE still 2 feet deep around the town.... read more

Grand Canyon is in northern Arizona, near the borders of Utah and Nevada, about a five hour drive south and east of Las Vegas NV. It was formed by erosion caused by the Colorado River, which flows westward through it, draining water from seven American states. One of the greatest natural wonders in the world, it is 277 miles (446 km) long, 18 miles (30 km) wide at the widest part, and a mile (1.6 km) deep. The elevation at the part on its South Rim most popular with tourists averages about 6,000 feet above sea level. More than five million visitors come to marvel at its beauty and grandeur every year. It’s definitely a place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. A Google search will reveal countless articles with all the information ... read more
