well in cancun now. not sure what to think. the roads coming in have been pretty bad actualy. in town its alright though. we hung out in campeche for a couple days and then moved down the road to valladolid. a nice small town, which was a nice change of pace from the cities we´ve been in. the hostel was great. we also met up with a canadian couple we´d met a couple days before in campeche. the area around the town was surround by cennotes, which are pool of water in cavenrs that lead to undergçround rivers. i got some good pitures and i´ll post a few soon enough. we visted 3. i swam in one. it was quite nice. full of weird little fish. we also went to chetchen itza. it was nice but ... read more

Got in after dark and am exhausted so haven´t seen anything - talked with several intweresting people on bus from airport and all seem friendly. Will explore tomorrow. Seem far away from the culture and intellect of DC. ... read more

In Cancun, feeling a bit off kilter. Realize I left my spanish phrase book on the plane. Feel a bit lost not speaking the language. After breakfast at a local place today - I the only gringa and did not order what I thought I had - went out to the Zona Hotel - an extremely different place from el centro where I am staying. The traffic was crazy getting out there - no marked stops in the town, just saw a group of people gathered so flagged down a bus with them. A fairly rainy day - very rainy earlier so some streets were too flooded to walk across. Thought I could get a new phase book so stopped at 2 malls out there - not one to be found, nor a dictionary. The Hotel ... read more

This time, I'm traveling with Insun and her husband to Cancun, Mexico. This is my first time seeing the Gulf of Mexico, and it feels more authentic by seeing it directly from Mexico! So I get acquinted with Insun before we left the States, and she made me a backpack, complete with a mini sombrero for my Mexican adventure. Now I'm ready. Well, a layover in Miami is inevitable on this trip, so I waited patiently at the airport before finally boarding to Cancun in the Yucatan Peninsula, almost directly south from Atlanta. White sand beach, turquois water and warm weather. What else can you ask for? We stay at a resort here, complete with mini golf course and private beach. We all have fun in Cancun for a couple of days. Signing off for now. ... read more

Previously on the blog - after being a professional tourist for a week and a half, I decide it´s time for a good sit. How do from Quintana Roo. After deciding I needed a bit of r ´n´ r, I consulted the trusty guide book for a location. I wanted open the door - BEACH, open the window - BEACH, open the wardrobe - BEACH (c) Lenny Henry mid-80s. Well, maybe not beach in the wardrobe. A little place caught my eye and, when I translated the name of the place, I knew it was the one. A short ferry ride off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula is a small island called Isla Mujeres - Women Island. It is in the state of Quintana Roo, which now means I know three words ending in roo ... read more

For people interested in finding out useful travel stuff about Cancun, click away now. For people masochistic enough to want to know the whole story of my trip, read on. As outlined in my previous blog, I got the ferry back from Isla Mujeres for express purpose of taking delivery of a credit card by courier in my appointed hostel in Cancun: Hostels Mexico. As I check in again, the nice lady on reception recognises me and her English is pretty good, so I explain to her why I am back. I explain that the credit card company said I would be phoned first, at the hostel and that the card would then be delivered. I explained that the phone call would come in either this evening (Wednesday) or in the morning (Thursday). I cut my ... read more

I arrived in Cancun, Mexico Saturday night around about 11pm local time. There was an ATM in the main terminal, so was able to get some pesos and conserve my US dollars. Got the hotel shuttle for $7 to Hostels Mexico in downtown Cancun. Soon got chatting with two german teaching assistants - Federica and Hanna - who were travelling out of Guatemala together with this Swiss guy Rafa. After several beers and bottle of rum it was decided that we wall all head off to Isla Holbox in the morning. Quick note on Hostels Mexico - nice place, free internet, breakfast free and as many eggs or pancakes as you like - however there is Blue Hostel next door which runs an all night club on the roof! Eventually got to the immaculate bus station ... read more

Claire: we hung about for a day or so in cancun (in the comfy little hostel that we stumbled across) to see how the weather was going to turn out over the following few days. the weather report told us cancun would have thunderstorms for another 3 days so we were considering another long bus trip to try and find some good weather. however the weather man was lying to us and the sun was blinding on tuesday morning; we decided to hang around the area and soak up the rays. cancun was getting a bit too much for us (the tour touts and guys outside the restraunts can be a bit aggressive when trying to lure tourists in) so we took a ferry across to isla mujeres (the island of women) to investigate it a ... read more

Not a lot to report...been out a few times.....got some pics and vid of Coco Bongo..... Went and had a look at some Mayan ruins that are here in Cancun, and my god...... the place was swarming with iguanas...everytime I saw a rock it had an iguana on it!!! Went out last night to a different club (gotta share the love!!) called Daddy Rock...was pretty cool...... and then this is the bit where I thank all the beautiful people, who, when I came home a little tipsy and a little homesick and started texting.....sent messages back making me feel loved...thanks and I love you all!! Claire: Sat 4th Nov We left super sunny Cancún to begin an adventure out to Chichen Itza. After some confusion at the bus station (this Spanish malarkey is a lot of hard work), the 12pm bus got us into the little town of Piste a few minutes from Chichen Itza around half 4 in the afternoon. The ruins shut at 6 so we decided to stay in Piste for the night and get an early start on the ruins in the morning. Piste is a pretty small town on the main highway through the area but the guy on the bus showed us to a reasonable (and cheap) place to stay for the night (I hope he enjoyed his commission!) and we found a nice little restraint to have dinner at. Sun 5th Nov The restraint ... read more
