February 1st 2012

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 …7 pm local time (somewhere in the Pacific Ocean heading to Los Barillos) Today was a better day. We’ve been sailing for longer than expected and going on average 3-6 knots which is really slow especially for a vessel of our size. It’s been quite challenging both mentally, emotionally and physically. On average we do not sleep more than 5.5 hours at any one time. (having shift 3 hours on and 6 hours off) It’s really only been 6 consecutive days but it’s already been tough and it feels much longer. Still working out the dynamics with other crew members. As always, there is a small split in the crew and I didn’t make the popular cut again. LOL, that’s okay, I’m learning to saillllllllll. As an influential person in my life ... read more

FINALLY! I’m sitting in the whare (NZ moari for house) with the captain across from me and I’ve finally had a chance to write about my experiences so far. I’ve done a few video blogs as you all know but writing seems to be the best way and so much easier for me to upload quickly. I’m listening to my Benny Benassi which is a nice change from the Hawaiian music we’ve been listening to the last week. We left San Diego on Tuesday and made it to Ensenada on Wednesday, stayed the night and left on Thursday around 5 pm. We’ve been at sea for 2.5 days so far and it’s been pretty sensational. I’ve finally be able to get use to my watch schedule (Watch = 3 working hours on deck every 6 hours), ... read more

Hola, Ensenada!

While looking online at the different shore excursions Carnival offers for Ensenada, I kept bypassing the City & Shopping Tour because, quite frankly, the name didn’t sound very interesting at all. I am glad that I pressed further and read the description because once I did I found we would be traveling by bus to three different stops in three hours. The first stop was the Riviera Del Pacifico, “a glamorous resort and casino during the roaring 20s.” Our second stop would find us visiting Bodegas de Santo Tomas, “the oldest winery in Mexico and taste its famous wines.” And finally, our tour would leave us some time for “browsing around the city’s main shopping district” before returning to the ship. Now, that sounds way more interesting than the name of this excursion implies. So, the ... read more

Lovely Lola & Me!

I have come to an awareness in my life that you can experience just about anything ... for the right price. For example, in Alaska next year, I have the opportunity to fly in a helicopter to the top of a glacier and mush a dog sled. Now, I’m a mom who lives in Southern California (not exactly dog-mushing material) but, for the right price ... I can mush a dog sled, if I choose to. This shows you the mindset I am in while at the Port of Ensenada when I spot this lovely creature ... an energetic three-month old tiger named Lola. Little Lola sits in a playpen of sorts, not really a cage but she is pretty well contained. Now, for the right price (a donation to help care for endangered and wild ... read more

Hola from Mexico (that's 'hello from Mexico' for those of you that don't speak Spanish).. Just as I was becoming comfortable outside of my comfort zone we head into Baja..... Setting off from San Diego after 3 days of rest, sending stuff home, buying maps on Mexico and stocking up on toiletries we were ready to go. It's great cycling into a big city but it's even better cycling out of one. We were quite anxious about the ride ahead of us having heard so many bad, really bad, reports about the killings, kidnapping and robberies happening in the area where we were headed. We decided to avoid Tijuana where alot of the news reports focus and instead head inland, over the mountains, to a town called 'Tecate". David's now group leader and I'm second in ... read more

Adam's Blog: After a full on Disneyland extravaganza, we wanted to finish our holiday on a high so decided to cruise to Mexico for the July 4th Long Weekend, before heading home. We went with Carnival - known for having good time cruises, looking after kids and whilst only a 4 day / 3 night trip it was a taste of part of Mexico - Ensenada actually, for us. We checked out of the Hyatt - grabbed a taxi and again sped along the freeway and despite some very clear directions to go to where the Queen Mary cruise ship was stationed - I saw our ship and the Queen Mary disappear in the mist as we headed over a bridge to San Pedro....hey buddy turn around you are going the wrong way! Nothing like an ... read more

95% of Americans wouldn't dare cross the southern border and enter in Mexico. What did we do? Exactly the opposite. With the advice from Kyle's friend at the Mexican Consulate we decided to embark into the unknown. We were headed into dangerous territory where we could've been killed by crossfire from rival drug cartels, or perhaps even kidnapped or robbed while driving through Tijuana. With the negative stigma associated with Mexico, we told our parents we may not come back home in one piece(note: only one set of parents were advised of this :)) The drive down from OC was a breeze. It took us a little over two and half hours to get from Costa Mesa to Ensenada. We left around 8 am and arrived around 10:45ish. Navigating through the border and getting to the ... read more

September 6-- What can I say about another wedding without boring everyone to death? Of course, I could go on about a beautiful couple, a beautiful setting and a beautiful day? Since the wedding wasn't scheduled until the evening, most of us at the hotel had most of the day to sight-see and shop. So naturally we headed back downtown to shop and eat some more! (I have done nothing but eat this trip. I don't think I will eat for a week after we get back.) You might think with all the shopping we did that we spent a lot of money. Actually we mostly window shopped. I loved seeing the colorful clothing, blankets and material; the gorgeous jewelry and art and all kinds of Mexican souveniers. I did buy one sundress in a gorgeous ... read more

Ansa and Echo left San Diego on Wednesday, December 2 bound for Puerto Salina, BCS, which is a small marina about 20 miles north of Ensenada. The sail south was pleasant with light winds so we motored in the morning and in the afternoon there was enough wind to put up the spinnakers and float on down at about 5 knots with 7 to 10 knots of wind. The marina here is new and there is not much else here other than vacation homes. There is one motel/cantina, but otherwise no stores or other businesses. The little town here, La Salina, is basically a summer beach town. A small group of US expats seem to have settled here for retirement. I have included a photo of the marina's hotel/restaurant which is still being built. It will ... read more

Well we were very lucky to get this day trip to mexico. We called up the company when we were at the zoo yesterday and they said they were all booked out. When we got home last night we looked up some websites on the internet and found a telephone number for last minute bookings. This time they said that they cancelled the tour because there weren't enough customers. We told them that there was 6 of us going, and that was enough to convince them to take us. So in the end we got an exclusive trip to Ensenada, Mexico. It was so strange, as soon as you cross the border everything changes. Road signs are in spanish, Streets are dirty, the whole look of the place is different. We travelled along the border fence ... read more
