To be honest, I was a little worried about Katie. I know she had a layover in Taiwan where she had to switch planes. The only reason I worry is because I’m the one that tends to figure that kind of stuff out for us. Luckily, I was worried for nothing. Katie made it just fine. Good job babe! Luckily, she got plenty of sleep on the plane and was ready to go. After a quick meal, a quick rest, we were out and about. I waited for Katie to get to Thailand to do the real meat of our sightseeing because I knew I’d have to take her anyways, so I didn’t want to do everything twice. Our first stop was Wat Pho. We took a private boat to the stop by Wat Pho. There’s ... read more

Wow, I’ve already been on vacation for a week. How time flies. Anyways, today we met with Central Group, the largest retailer in Thailand. We listened to the presentation, asked questions, etc. After that, Central was kind enough to give us cards to use in the food court area. After our meal, a few of us rounded up all the cards that had remaining money on them and pooled it together to get as much beer as possible for the hotel. I guess b-school teaches you about efficiency and how to make the most of what you have, eh? With a few hours to kill until the Muay Thai fights, we decided to relax by the pool. If you have stayed at Shangri-La before, you know that they have a great pool area. If you’re planning ... read more

In the morning, my classmates and I met with a representative of TRUE Corporation, one of the main telecoms in Thailand. The presenter was extremely sharp. She graduated from MIT and has been working with the company for 7 years. After finishing school stuff, we went back to the hotel and went to the Tawandeng Brewery. It’s a German Brewery, owned by Americans, in Thailand. Gotta love globalization, eh? I must say, even though a lot of us have spent months on end together in class working on projects, nothing makes people bond like a few pints of beer. There are people that I haven’t spoken to in over a year and now they are very dear friends. I also think sharing experiences brings people closer. In any case, it was a great time, but I ... read more

It finally seems like my sleep schedule is stabilizing. I’m no longer waking up at 3 or 4am and struggling to go back to sleep. I also think the upgrade in hotel has helped tremendously. For those of you that are looking for a good hotel, I highly recommend the Shangri La in Bangkok. I’m sure it’s pricy (the room is provided by the program I’m in, so I’m not sure), but it’s a beautiful property with great rooms. In any case, my classmates and I met with Kasikorn Bank, one of the 4 largest banks in Thailand. We learned about Thailand’s economy, Kasikorn’s strategy, vision, etc. It was really interesting, even though a couple people fell asleep. However, I don’t think it was due to the presentation, but rather the aggressive partying they did the ... read more

Refreshed after a good night sleep, my classmates and I started the day by meeting with a hedge fund manager of one of the biggest funds in Singapore. This man handles a fund with over $2 billion and is probably one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. Not only was he able to communicate well, but was able to communicate extremely complex problems in extremely simple terms. Even the non-finance people of the group were enthralled. That is really saying something. Truth be told, I geeked out a little bit and was so interested in what he was saying. I have about 5 pages of notes. After the morning session, we headed to meet with a company that specializes in ornamental fish. It was ok, but the highlight was putting our feet in a pool ... read more

Bzzzz Bzzz Bzzzz. Damnit. It felt like I had just fallen asleep. This time, it wasn’t the jet lag that woke me up, it was the alarm clock that jarred me out of my slumber. I quickly got ready and headed down to the lobby for breakfast. After a quick bite, we headed to the Marina Bay Sands to listen to the CEO's presentation. I must say, he's a sharp individual. He was eloquent, intelligent, and extremely skilled at dancing around the tough questions. After we finished there, we headed over to IBM and listened to some of their management give us a run down on their Singapore operation, direction, strategy, etc. It was pretty interesting. After we finished the school obligations, I went to do some exploring with classmates. I showed them the Hawker Center, ... read more

It was a little tough sleeping last night. I kept waking up in the middle of the night. Guess that’s the jet lag. In any case, my roommate Charles and I headed over to Mulligan’s in Clark Quay with our teammate Tim to meet some of Charles’ friends that live in Singapore. His friends were so nice and had the cutest 15 month old daughter. We chatted for a while over a few pints and headed to the Maxwell hawker center. For those of you that don’t know, I highly suggest checking this out in Singapore, especially if you’re on a budget. We had much more expensive meals while in Singapore, but this was by far the best meal I had there. There’s a stall in the Hawker Center called the Tian tian chicken and. For ... read more

It’s finally happening! When I started the MBA program at USC, I was told that I would have to study abroad for a week as part of the GLOBE program in order to get my Master’s Degree. For the last year and a half, I’ve been looking forward to this trip, and now the time has come. Also, for the last year and a half, I’ve used all my PTO at work to study for midterms and finals. Not this time. This time, I’m going to actually get to enjoy a vacation. After a 14 hour flight, a 2 hour layover in Hong Kong, and a 3 hour flight to Singapore, we finally arrived! Fatigued, but excited, we all got off the plane ready for an unforgettable trip. A few quick first impressions were that Singapore ... read more

Last time you guys heard from me, we had just gotten back to the hostel from pounding drinks at the pub crawl. Today, well, today was the day our awesome journey ends =/ No more authentic japanese sushi, no more extensive metro system, no more sumo, and no more worry free days not having to go to work.... (for a while at least). Our flight departed from Tokyo at 5:30pm. To be on the safe side, we left the hostel at noon. It's always better to get to the airport early..... especially when you're on standby. We hung around the hostel until noon, checked out, and headed to the airport. After getting some much needed sustenance and some last minute gifts, we headed to gate 37. We were on "standby" so it wasn't guaranteed we had ... read more

By this time, Katie and I had seen most of the stuff we planned to see this trip. As mentioned in previous blogs, I was just looking forward to two more things this trip....... Going to a baseball game and going on that pub crawl in Roppongi (one of the main party areas in Tokyo). Unfortunately, the only baseball game started at 6pm and the pub crawl started at 7pm. I remember some of my fondest memories of Europe were pub crawls, so I decided to go to the pub crawl instead. First, however, Katie and I had to kill about 8 hours or so. We started off the day sleeping in (the only day we've been able to do that). We then headed out to the Edo Tokyo museum. I had read that it was ... read more
