I find it amusing that there are no tolls to get onto PEI, but there is a toll to leave the island. We opted to take the ferry to PEI and will leave by the Confederation Bridge. It is known as The Gentle Island and from what I saw that is accurate. The hills are the gentle rolling type. It is picturesque with the crops, the cows, and the fishing boats. We did a lot of driving to see the different sections and coasts of PEI. Charlottetown We visited Charlottetown two different nights. We both enjoyed this town. The first night we walked around an old section that has restaurants, a brew pub and street music. We ate and drank at The Gahan House. That is where I had scallops for the very first time. This last week in PEI has been great, it started with the 13 kilometer confederation bridge coming from New Brunswick onto PEI. We camped at a small campgrounds just out of Charlottetown and decided to do all our sightseeing from there. The trees are just starting to show some fall colours. We toured Charlottetown first and around every corner there is a little history of Confederation. Down at the pier local musicians perform on the streets. At Founders Hall we did a walk through time starting in 1864 with the meeting that led to the birth of Canada and on July 1 1867 Canada became reality, this museum walk through was excellent and worth it to see. Next we travelled to Cavendish to Anne of Green Gables Museum and Avonlea Village, (a very touristy place but ... read more

We have made good time since the last blog. We drove from our last stop through to Montreal just stopping overnight in some places that don't really warrant a mention. When we got to Montreal it was a bit of a culture shock. Quebec province is French and French only. While the surrounding provinces often list things in English and French there is no such luxury here. Every road sign, business name and all the roadwork signs and instructions where all in French. A GSP unit was essential to find your way around. Luckily most people spoke reasonable English so communication wasn't too much of an issue. Along with the language the people are very much French - they are rather an arrogant type - yes this is a broad generalisation but true none the less. ... read more

If it’s Tuesday, this must be Prince Edward Island I see passing by through the outside window of our Lanai Cabin. The deep reddish orange earth of the coast touching the water along the south coast of the island is unmistakable, from viewing “Anne of Green Gables” or watching DVDs from one of my favorite series “Road to Avonlea”. I spot one of the square towered lighthouses on a promontory and decide it’s time for some pictures as we make our way to port. A brisk breeze is blowing and the iron-rich soil makes colorful contrast to the many shades of green. We grab a quick bite in the Lido and make our way to Deck 3 to disembark and meet up with our tour group in the terminal at Charollottetown. Did I mention that we ... read more

De zee was ... read more

We left Moncton today and headed for the Hopewell Rocks! Google it if you don't know what it is! Basically it's the only place in the world you can walk on the Ocean floor because of the quick tides. As we were walking there...which was about a 15 min hike down the paths Jen and I both had to go to the bathroom. As we approached Jen reminded me of how she hated outhouses..."It will be fine!!" I tried reassuring her. Well Jen walked in two seconds and came out saying "I can't do it!!!" HAHAH What was even funnier was that a cub scout tried using the public outhouse at the Hopewell Rocks and came out gagging and said "That's just wrong!".Lol. His mom said if a cub scout can't handle it than it must ... read more

It's a rainy miserable day but we're still heading off to visit Anne of Green Gables in Cavendish which is about a 40 min drive from downtown Charlottetown. This has always been a dream of mine to visit the quaint house that inspired many of Lucy Maud Montgomery's much beloved novlels like Anne of Green Gables. It was the first time I drove in pouring rain in my Kia Soul but it has essential things that make you feel safe like good windshield wipers and traction there were no worries at all! We arrived in Cavendish and pulled into the visitors parking lot. There were tonnes of tourists many of which were from Asian countries because over there it is part of their curriculum. They study L.M's books and read Anne of Green Gables as part ... read more

Ah, a whole day and nowhere to go! well, nowhere in the car anyway. Slept in a bit and had a nice free breakfast at the hotel and headed out for a walk to downtown Charlottetown. Very cool old buildings and houses and churches. Saw a place called Beaton's Wholesale, so we stopped in to look around (since Janet's ancestors that lived in Iris were the Beaton's). Not much there so we moved on. Well, wouldn't you know, we found a local brewery! The Gahon House Brewery. So, we stopped in for a bite to eat (and a beer or two). Yes, Patsy, the Canadian Pub Crawl continues! We liked the stout so much we bought a growler (a 64 oz. jug). It is resting comfortably in our hotel fridge. After taking it easy and lounging ... read more

Had a nice breakfast at the McDonald Country Inn and hit the road. But, first we stopped to chat with Ann Marie at the visitor center in St. Peter's Nova Scotia. We stopped there the previous day, so I feel we are now on a first name basis (plus she shares the same name as my little sister). She gave us some information on the ferry to PEI (Prince Edward Island) and off we went. We drove a little out of the way up the west coast of Cape Breton Island to enjoy some nice scenery. We then drove on to Pictou to catch the ferry and missed the 2:45 ferry by 5 minutes! But, that gave us an opportunity to walk around the docks and look at all the fishing boats. We even met a ... read more

We were well into the fourth song when the man on my left side turned to me and shouted into my ear. We've got to get you up so you can daunce! You're going to daunce, aren't you?" "Daunce?" "Yes, daunce!" I took a moment to consider this. The guitars and stomping feet made it difficult to make out what he'd said, but after a few seconds I realized I had stumbled upon yet another piece of local dialect. "Oh, you mean dance!" "Yes! That's what I said! Daunce! We've only got a couple of songs until lunch." "Lunch?!" "Yes, lunch!" Something was wrong now. It was nearly 10:00pm - surely he didn't mean lunch. Then I began to smell the fresh tea, tuna sandwiches and baked desserts. They were being laid out on white plastic ... read more
