Dee Jaroway

The name on her birth certificate says Diane Jaroway, but everyone in Thunder Bay, Ontario knows her as Dee.

Never one to sit still for long, the energetic deejay has been waking up Thunder Bay for the past five years, co-hosting the wildly popular Mark and Dee Morning Show on Rock 94.

But beyond the Nickelback and Led Zeppelin intros, the entertainment updates and the endless on-location remotes is a woman who cares about her community.

Whether it’s emceeing charity events and helping them raise thousands of dollars, or her own initiatives, like the fundraising calendars she’s helped put together the past two years in support of Habitat For Humanity and Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Dee’s got a soft spot for those in need.

"I’m constantly trying to help build awareness for great causes throughout our community," she says. "Or I’m helping local charities raise money. I just love helping people anyway I can."

That’s exactly what led to Dee’s Feed My Soul Tour.

"The idea just clicked," she says, recalling the moment she saw the international contest in celebration of Kia’s 10 Millionth Export. The contest called on contestants to share their ideas of what they would do if they won a Kia.

"I’m a spiritual person, so the idea of nurturing your soul is part of my philosophy. When I saw the contest, the Feed Your Soul concept just leapt out at me. I thought it would be a great way to help give back to communities across the country."

"Our food banks in Thunder Bay are in desperate need of donations, and I know food banks in other communities across Canada are faced with the same issues. It was a natural fit."

The two-week trip, which will take her from Thunder Bay to St. John’s, N.L., suits her never-sit-still personality.

"It’s going to be go-go-go the entire time," she says.

That kind of mirrors her life to date, Dee adds.

An entrepreneur and consultant who helps local companies with their marketing and social media strategies, she’s in the early stages of starting her own public relations, communications and social networking consulting agency.

"It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do," she says.

In her spare time – it does happen occasionally, honestly – Dee is no stranger to the burgeoning karaoke world, belting out tunes from one end of the city to the other, while encouraging her less talented friends to throw caution to the wind and join her on stage.

"C’mon, everyone can sing Collin!" Thunder Bay’s unofficial karaoke queen jokes.

Fluent in Polish and Ukrainian, she’s a big supporter of the local music scene, has been known to play in a band or two from time to time, and if that’s not enough, she fancies herself a bit of a gourmet cook.

Oh, and keeping with the theme of the Feed My Soul Tour, the outdoor lover is also an ice racer extraordinaire – just don’t remind her about flipping her car, which was aptly named Dee-Mented.

"I feel the need for speed, but only on the race track," she says, promising to obey all traffic laws as she makes her way east.

Today was the FINAL Feed My Soul Food Drive at Performance Kia in my hometown of Thunder Bay - Bruno Niederer and the staff at Kia made an amazing effort all day to bring in donations! I was back at work on my radio station at Rock 94 - Dougall Media from 6am with my co-host Mark Tannahill. Together we did our morning show until 10am. I then continued on with my mid-day show until 2pm and then did a remote from 2-6pm. 12 hours later we raised $10,040.00!!!!! and collected more than 2000 food items for the Regional Food Distribution Association! What an ending to an amazing 2 week trip! The radio remote definitely made the difference and all of Bruno's efforts! He was on the phone all day calling businesses!! Today we got up and left for Peggy's Cove which is a small rural community located on the eastern shore of St. Margarets Bay in Nova Scotia's Halifax Regional Municipality. Before we got there Leith reminded us that there are signs that say Don't Go Past Here and if we did we could possibly slip into the water and most likey die...like many others have. Yaaaa freak us out Leith lol but what he said was true. Peggy's Cove is one of the busiest tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and it took a few tries to get a photo without random people in the background but we did it! It was SUPER windy! Half our photos are with us eating our hair lol but it was worth it! We then ended up taking some great pics ... read more

Today we arrived in Halifax! The drive was great...beautiful rolling hills and farmland. The city itself is gorgeous! Lots of old historical buildings blended in with the new. Glenn Semaniuk (former TBT News Reporter) now working in sales for Halifax's The Bounce met up with us and we went Salty's Restaurant. Currently it's the Busker's Festival and a lot of performers were out ther doing their thing. I had lobster for the first time in my life! It was okay...lol We also went to the Lower Deck Pub which was sooo cool! The house band...Wrekhouse did amazing covers of everything from Kings of Leon to Van Morrison! AMAZING BAND! Tomorrow we are going to check out Kia Halifax Dealership for the Feed My Soul Food Drive...I have a special hat in honor of the Maritimes that ... read more

It's a rainy miserable day but we're still heading off to visit Anne of Green Gables in Cavendish which is about a 40 min drive from downtown Charlottetown. This has always been a dream of mine to visit the quaint house that inspired many of Lucy Maud Montgomery's much beloved novlels like Anne of Green Gables. It was the first time I drove in pouring rain in my Kia Soul but it has essential things that make you feel safe like good windshield wipers and traction there were no worries at all! We arrived in Cavendish and pulled into the visitors parking lot. There were tonnes of tourists many of which were from Asian countries because over there it is part of their curriculum. They study L.M's books and read Anne of Green Gables as part ... read more

We left Moncton today and headed for the Hopewell Rocks! Google it if you don't know what it is! Basically it's the only place in the world you can walk on the Ocean floor because of the quick tides. As we were walking there...which was about a 15 min hike down the paths Jen and I both had to go to the bathroom. As we approached Jen reminded me of how she hated outhouses..."It will be fine!!" I tried reassuring her. Well Jen walked in two seconds and came out saying "I can't do it!!!" HAHAH What was even funnier was that a cub scout tried using the public outhouse at the Hopewell Rocks and came out gagging and said "That's just wrong!".Lol. His mom said if a cub scout can't handle it than it must ... read more

Today we woke up in a sweltering hotel room....ya...we were dolts and had the heat on by accident. This trip has taught us a lot of useful things for future travel like how to work room keys, crazy fast elevators, crazy slow elevators, you can order a cot if they only give you 2 single beds by accident (Ottawa), that not all pubs in Montreal serve food, that restuarants close a bit earlier, that parking isn't always available and isn't always close to where you're staying, that downtown Toronto traffic is insane, that Montreal drivers change lanes without giving you much time to react, that not everyone can speak english in Quebec but just making the effort is what they appreciate even if they are laughing behind your back, that some hotel rooms have faulty hairdryers ... read more

We got up and got the Kia Soul packed up and headed for Fredericton, New Brunswick! I’ve never been to the Maritimes before!!! SO excited!! Along the way we stopped at a gas bar and I even got to pick up a package of fresh, authentic cheese curds!!!! YAY! We’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to get some of the things that I was hoping to have like a Montreal Bagel booo...oh well I’ll just have to come back for another visit! The New Brunswick landscape is SO beautiful! Sprawling forests and lakes and a smart thing that they built…a wildlife fence to keep deer and moose etc from running out and getting hit by the traffic. We so need that in northern Ontario!! On the way to Fredericton we had to make a ... read more

We had a fun drive to Quebec City listening to Leith’s tunes which are mostly death metal tunes (kidding) haha mostly Bob Dylan and 80s music which is fine by me. All of our music playlists are very diverse. I had to throw in some irritating songs to make everyone laugh like “Midnight at the Oasis” yup….try getting that out of your head hahaha. We checked into the hotel and guess where it was? Right next door to a HUGE mall – oh ya baby! So we checked out the mall had some dinner and then hit the hay! The next morning we headed for Kia Ste-Foy and met Directrice des operations Annie Laliberte and Andree Casgrain from Moisson Quebec. Annie had to interpret to her staff for me since they didn’t speak English very well. ... read more

We were scheduled to go to our first dealership at noon so unfortunately we missed the yoga classes that happen on the lawn right in front of Parliament every Wed. I really would have liked to see Steven Harper in his yoga pants…ok let’s erase that visual haha. So after having tea on the terrace and enjoying the view we headed off to Kia 417 where we met General Manager Linda Carriere. They were having a special summer event and had the car tents set up. It’s really cool you just set it up like a normal tent but then attach to the main cargo area. I thought it was really cool that management decided to match whatever the employees brought in and donated. Just as we had gotten there the girls were just coming back ... read more

This morning we got up and headed to Longueuil Kia (Longueuil is about an 18 min drive from Montreal)and met the awesome and friendly staff including Service Manager Sebastian and General Manager Andre Nolin. They gave us a tour of their new building which is about 4 months old. They moved into a gorgeous facility that cost around 6 million dollars to build and has a lower and top floor showroom! The Kia cars get a little ride on the elevator to the top floor! They also have a gorgeous glass staircase! And get this…be jealous employees wherever you are…they have a rooftop terrace where you can sit and have your lunch while you look at the beautiful Montreal landscape which includes the Olympic Stadium that was built for the 1976 Summer Olympics.
