Maasdam was scheduled to dock in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island about 9:00 AM this morning, about the time we were waking up. This tour-free day for us is certainly starting out at a leisurely pace. As I checked the booty that Sharon’s raffle ticket had won in the casino the night before, I was happy to see that the T-Shirt was an XL-size, and the hat was a nice one too. That’s when I couldn’t find the baseball hat from Niagara Falls that I’d been wearing. We had to rush to get up to the Lido to get there in time for the open buffet breakfast. Sharon had her French toast and bacon and I waited quite a while in the omelet line, as the gentleman at the front ordered up not just one, but ... read more

This morning, we kindred spirits arrived in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island before 8 AM. I had managed to drag myself out of bed in time for my first work-out in the gym on the Lido Deck, and enjoyed seeing the red soil of Prince Edward Island approaching on our left. The island drew ever closer as I worked out on the treadmill with quite a few others, who were all running at a blistering pace; while, I walked along at 3.6 MPH enjoying the outside view, not minding that reception for the channel covering Wimbledon was no better here than in our cabin. We had breakfast in the dining room, and again I enjoyed the Swiss Muesli, along with the Frittata Italiano and I added some link sausage and toast. Sharon ordered one slice of ... read more

Monday morning started our first and only “sea day” on this leg of the cruise as we make the passage from Quebec City to Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. And it began with a late start, after setting the clocks ahead one hour for the next time zone, with Sharon exclaiming “Is it really eight o’clock.” The importance of 8 AM is that on sea days mass is held at… you guessed it: 8 AM! It was ten minutes before eight actually, and Sharon rushed to get herself presentable, rushing off to find about twenty others had also gotten up for mass. Every priest that we’ve had on HAL cruises has been memorable, special and even a little quirky sometimes in their own special way. Father Dan is no exception. Yesterday he told of how he ... read more

Hi, All – It’s Monday night, Sept. 30th, and I’m writing this message for the next time we hit a WiFi connection. Right now it’s around 8:30 PM, September 30th, and we’ll be spending the night parked at the bottom of the East Point Lighthouse on the very eastern tip of Prince Edward Island. Because of Bob’s curiosity and internet explorations, tomorrow we’re heading off to a place we’d never heard of – Isles de la Madeleine, a string of islands about 100 from this lighthouse in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Tomorrow afternoon, after driving about a half hour from this lighthouse, we’ll catch the ferry for a five-hour trip to reach the main island of the Madeleine archipelago. If you want to look it up, it’s midway between the Gaspe Peninsula, ... read more

Boarded the ship - Holland America Lines - the Eurodam at around lunchtime. Some confusion when going through the customs area - when we were misdirected by one young man - several times but eventually got to where we had to be and did all the things we had to do. Dropped into our cabin and then met Ken & Noveen to show them around the important parts of the ship. Of course this meant Bar by Bar and stopping in at the Crow's Nest for our first drink..s. Later we had dinner and then stopped at the BB King band in the Queens lounge and sang and danced along with the music - was really good! The ship wasn't leaving until the next day at 4pm so we stayed up late. Today we had a ... read more

It was a rainy day. It lightly sideways rained all day. But that’s ok. This is the day we set aside for my vacation. I insisted that at least one day is spent doing nothing. No driving, no sightseeing. Just sit and read a book. It would have been nice to read a book by the sea, on the rock in front of the cottage that juts out into the water even at low tide. But that would have treacherous at best today. We did pick up a couple of geocaches near the cottage in the rain and got pretty wet doing it. One we had tried yesterday but couldn’t get to it because a bunch of trees blocked our path at high tide. Today we tried at low tide and were successful, walking right out ... read more

"Unforgettable, that's what you are Unforgettable, though near or far" Nat "King" Cole got us off to a velvet start today as we headed out of Halifax for Prince Edward Island. First, a note about Halifax that I left out yesterday. On December 6, 1917, an ammunition ship blew up in Halifax harbor after colliding at slow speed with another ship. THe collision started a fire and the ship drifted out of control to the area of Pier 6, then exploded with the force of about 2400 metric tons of TNT, the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons ( the "Little Boy" bomb dropped on Hiroshima was give a yield of about 16,000 tons of TNT, while the "Fat Man" dropped Nagasaki yielded about 21,000 tons). The effect, occurring immediately next to ... read more

Potato farms, lobster boats, cows, seafood restaurants, ride-on lawnmowers, Anne of Green Gables, and things that contain the word Confederation: what do they all have in common? There are more of these things here than anywhere else on the planet. Especially, ad nauseum, Anne of Green Gables paraphernalia. People even name their cows and lawnmowers after her. This is now an official road trip - we broke 10,000 kms today! Yesterday was a down day, chance to get caught up on sleep, laundry, bike maintenance as both Helli and I feeling under the weather. Walked around historic downtown, very charming area with old brick buildings, tree-lined streets, endless restaurants and coffee shops, quaint expensive boutiques filled today with Holland America Veendam passengers. The cruise ship comes right into town, which is only a few square blocks ... read more

Our trip to North Sydney harbour seemed uneventful. It seemed it because we slept the whole way. We had toasted our arrival on the ferry with a rather large glass of wine and that was all that was needed to put us to sleep an hour before the ferry even left the dock. We had decided to ride from North Sydney to Sydney, about 25 kilometres to try to find a restaurant so we could have breakfast on the waterfront. After touring around downtown for twenty or thirty minutes we decided to go into the Holiday Inn. It had a dining room over looking a marina and the bay. Breakfast was great but the reason for sharing this rather ordinary story was what happened after breakfast. We were about to leave when who walks in the ... read more
