My final week was spent traveling from Ottawa back to Toronto along the scenic route. The country is vast and expansive and really beautiful. It was the start of the Indian summer and the colours that the trees were turning were amazing. The forests are nothing like Australia, which is predominantly eucalyptus trees, rather they are a mixture of Maple trees, Plane trees and Alpine forest. The Maple leaves turn bright red before they fall from the trees in the fall and this makes for spectacular photography. I traveled along Lake Ontario, which is one of the 5 great Lakes. It... read more

I arrived in Ottawa about a week before uni started so i could sort out my units and settle myself into residence life and the study that would necessarily follow. When i arrived the weather was absolutely beautiful - hot, sunny and a lot like the Perth summer that seemed so long ago. Considering our flight from Vancouver left at 11:30am, the duration being around 5hrs and Ottawa being a few hours ahead of time, I arrived in Ottawa airport at about 7:30pm. I was contemplating taking a taxi to residence but the sun was still out. Instead i dragged my luggage onto the bus and took the OC to campus (the transport system in Ottawa is called OC Transport hahah). Just a friendly side note, the bus system is nuts here - in some parts ... read more

It's always good to get back home again, especially after being on the road for three and half months. Sleeping in my own bed, fast Internet, bumping into friends on the street - there are so many things about Ottawa that I love. But I also love traveling, meeting new friends and enjoying (or sometimes enduring) new experiences. The three months I spent in Seychelles were a great experience, as were the past two weeks staying with friends in Rome. Let me fill you in on a number of the highlights of the past few weeks before signing off. You'll recall that after spending my first two months on the main island of Mahe, we all went to Praslin. There, I was covering for Rev. Bryan who was away on a training course. On my second ... read more

Wow almost 4 years have passed since I've last lived in Canada. I can't explain how amazing this experience has been. I loved every minute of it and would do it all over again, exactly the same way (maybe I would extend though.. ;o) I've been back home now for almost 2 months. It is hard to be here & to re-adapt and at times depressing, but it's all worth it in the end when you get to see your family & friends. You come to realise that home is home, it is where you were born, where you lived most your life, this is where your roots are. But sometimes you realise that even though your roots are there, you've grown to be somewhere else, somewhere different. Where that is who knows.. Some day we'll ... read more

Ok first of all apologies for the lack of updates....fortunately we didnt get swept over the falls or get eaten by grizzlies!as you might be aware the travelblog webpage crashed a few days ago and has only just got up and running. I've had to do a lot of copy and pasting and reloading photos but it appears that 'we're back in the game!'.So as I rantically rack my memory for the last 7 days, let me fill you in on our intrepid adventure! Monday 30th July Awoke bright and early to a soaking from Joe who had apparently uncovered our 'toothpaste in the water bottle' shenanigans......a childish classic. After composing ourselves and a pancake breakie, we made our way to the coach station and travelled to Ottowa in Ontario, where we met mike's aunty, uncle ... read more

UntitledSorry but I have to make this quick. Today I learned about the health care system first hand. Turns out I somehow have vertigo, which is some strange thing that makes me feel light headed and dizzy at times. The doctor says that I could have it from 2 to 3 weeks! I'm hoping it goes away by tomorrow. Although I missed a tour of the parliament house, I still made it to the Fulbright offices in Ottawa where we met with teachers and a superintendent of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. Here's an interesting fact- There are four types of public school districts that exist in accordance to the Canadian Constitution: 1. Catholic, 2. French, 3.English, 4. Public. We then had dinner at an Aboriginal restaurant where we ate traditional Canadian foods. ... read more

Today we took a tour of Ottawa's Parliament building. The building was created in the gothic style and incorporates a lot of very interesting architecture. (Sorry...still no pictures.) The most interesting part of the day was listening to a presentation by Amelita Armit. Ms. Armit is the Vice President of the Programs of the Parliamentary Centre. She has lived in Canada, in the Phillippines, and in the U.S. and has participated in the Canadian government as an Assistant Deputy Minister in Alberta. Ms. Armit basically gave an overview of the Canadian government, while contrasting it with the U.S. system. She also addressed many current issues and challenges in Canada. Canada is a representative democracy, but their governing system is different than the U.S. It is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II serving as head of ... read more

Ottawa, CanadaToday was another very busy day. The Fulbright group met a 7:45 a.m. for breakfast, and at 8:30 a.m. we headed off for the Museum of Civilization. Here we were lead on a tour of the museum, where we learned about the history of Canada from pre-contact of Europe to present. The museum had an excellent exhibition of First Nation artifacts and their history. From here we went over to the National Gallery of Canada, where we toured the museum and saw Canada’s permanent art collection of both contemporary and modern art. All of the artists were Canadian. Finally we had high tea at the Chateau Laurier where met with Clare Beckton who spoke on women’s issues in Canada. Hoy era otro dia muy ocupado. El grupo de becarios de Fulbright se juntaron para almorzar ... read more

Bratty Comment of the Day: I'm not used to eating this much. I rarely eat breakfast at home. These days I'm eating a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As our Southern group member said "I'm just stuffed to the gills". After another big breakfast at the Phi Restaurant we took a cab up to the Museum of Civilization. We spent a good hour looking at historical artifacts from the First Nations. They had an amazing display of totem poles and the homes of the First Nations. It was a lot of great information. Third grade teachers, I have a lot of great pictures for our storytelling unit! We continued on through the museum and got a Disneyland-esque tour of Canadian history. Everything had a display with characters similar to those in Pirates of the Caribbean. I ... read more
